and I can't decide wether to get a PC or Mac. I've never used a Mac before, but I hear good things about them. All I would be using the computer for would be internet, instant messaging, videos, music and the odd text document or something for school.

I first thought I would just get a regular Windows based PC, but have considered getting a Mac. I hear that they are alot easier to use and give the user alot less hassle. Low chances of you getting viruses or just general problems with your computer and stuff. But they are relatively expensive, and I don't really want to go and pay for something that isn't worth the money. I know most of you guys play PC games and would have PC as the obvious choice. But im not into PC gaming, and I just really want a computer that will be easy to use and give me no problems, I hear Macs are good like that. Is it true or would I just be better of saving my money and getting a Windows based computer?

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Even if you don't play games =P lol macs are cool I guess they look nice...but I don't like them for locked hardware and price. ...I also don't understand "you can run windows on it" Dosen't that defeat the purpose of mac!?

I'd go wilh the dell because they have good prices and are supposed to be handy if it breaks. It's all up to you though.

Don't let us decide for you

If you're not going to be playing games on it and just doing school work, surfing and chatting on it, then get a MAC. If you are going to be playing games, doing CAD work or any kind of art designing, get a PC.

I own both a Windows PC, and a Macbook. The reason I have the Macbook is because I'm going into Graphic Design and my college requires you to have one. At first I was very anti-Mac, I just really disliked that I had to pay $1,600 minimum for a laptop, and plus I had been using Windows since I got my first computer... But I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the Macbook, it just runs so smooth, never any problems and is extremely user friendly. But with that said, since you're just going to use your computer for basic tasks then go with a Windows PC, much less expensive and it gets the job done.

[QUOTE="skrat_01"]Which is purley based on ones opinion.

No console offers an experience a PC does.

Go figure.

lowe0

And no PC offers the experience a Mac does. All day at work, I want to throw my XP machine off the roof because of the things I'm used to on my Mac that I can't do on a PC. No Spotlight. No Expose. No unified menu bar (a lot more important than it sounds - see Fitt's Law). And as annoying as a beachballed Mac is, my Windows machine just freezing up for 30 seconds or so here and there without telling me anything is far worse. But, I'm on a .Net team, so unless I move to a Java team, I'm stuck on Windows.

Indeed, and the Macs I have used for three years have given me nothing but grief and dismay (because random lockups, netowrk dropouts, and random application application crashes are apples example of 'superior computing').
While of course windows XP based computers are much more accident prone, im sick to death of hearing mac users claim system stability, and 'so much superior os' when these issues consistently happen, and impact on work im trying to produce on the godforsaken machines (not that you are forcing your opinion on me or anything).

Probably should just get a PC. Unless you want to pay double the price to add some so called "style" to your computer.

. i see no right click-er on it as im typing this. its just a big white mouse with a tiny scroll ball on top
shakmaster13
I left my mouse at home (I'm out of town ATM) so this may not be precisely correct, but if you go to System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse, click on the Mouse tab, and set the right side to "Secondary Button", you'll get right clicks. It's a little picky about your fingers, though - lift the left finger, or you'll get a left-click (it has touch sensors in the top of the mouse that read what fingers are touching as you click).

Go try that, then come back. Problem solved. This is exactly how I have my mouse set up for when I have to remote into my Windows machine at work, and it works perfectly.

Well you can't game on a MAC unless you really only prefer Blizzard games. Just get a Windows based PC and partition Ubuntu.

Pc's are cheaper.... As long as you take care of your cpu and download some free anti virus stuff and firewalls, you should be fine.... I don't see a point for a mac imo... other than for some media programs

or he can just hit control when he clicks

and to the tc i got a mac for college and love it i use to be anti-mac but i used one at my college and loved it so i just sold my other laptop and got a mac. But thats beside the point if you go with pc do not and i repeat do not get VISTA. Try to get a laptop with xp or linux vista ruins laptops.

IN all honesty, I despise Mac.. When it comes to gaming, its non existent.. They are overpriced for the hardware they get, and they are conformist pieces of hardware at their finest..

graphics cards in macs are usually really crappy even the one with ethe 8800gs, thats really not much at all, mabe it will get high setting in crysis with 20fps at the mac's native res. Plus the ram is over priced....well everything is over priced, i say buy a pc and buy vista 64bit and OS X10 from apple and install it on your pc and do dual boots, so that u means u can have good parts, still have a mac OS and have vista for games and dx10.

for what you want to use it for, mac. easily. easy to use and will give you no problems, especially if you set up a firewall (just a heads up most mac users never even use a firewall and they're usually fine)

however, if you don't want to spend the extra $$$, a windows computer will do all you stated. you will have to worry about viruses, spyware, etc though. and windows can be a #%$@# sometimes for no reason whatsoever. and 1 suggestion if i may if you get windows computer don't get vista. please. it's really really annoying and it just finds ways to screw itself up in the most annoying ways possible.

Unless you plan on being an audio engineer/producer, PC > Mac.

Get a PC, 'cause if you want a Mac for that purpose, you'll get an overpriced piece of crap.

Well it looks like im going to be getting the Dell Inspiron 1525, a Mac would be nice but for the prices they retail at it just doesn't seem worth it. There too many other things I would like to buy aswell, PC it is.

tough decision... PC gets games, but Macs are unbelievably sexy, not to mention great for everything that doesn't involve gaming (school, etc.).

I say it's pretty much even.

I've never understood the appeal of a Mac myself, simply because you're paying nearly double the price for essentially the same thing (the true difference lies in the OS and some of the supported professional software - such as video editors and publishing suites).

For what the TC needs to do, I would normally recommend a Windows based PC. The freedom is greater on the platform, he'll save a substantial amount of money, and Windows PCs no harder to use than a Windows machine once you know the ins and outs of each.

Macs are just flashier (which admittedly appeals to a lot of people).

If you're considering a Mac, TC, I'd try one out and see if the extra flash is worth the extra price for you.
