Micro-transactions is probably how gaming will die in the future. Paying for maps? As a PC gamer, I find that ridiculous and absurd.

Why not? Do you not play the game online.

I bought the new Vegas maps (everyone I know bought them), but you get thrown out if the host changes to one of the maps and you don't own it. I play it so much though, that the extra money was well spent.

They were free with Far Cry because they were user made. I don't mind paying for maps made by the dev, they employ people to make and play test them and they have to be paid.

If hermits didn't know, demos are free on XBL... and a lot of map packs become free after a certain period.

In any case, I don't really mind. If it's a game I really enjoy, I'll pay for it and support the devs.

Honestly, am I the only person who plays PC games regularly that doesn't rub it in the console fans faces about this micro transaction thing? We get user created content that really varies from crap to really good, and out of every 100 maps created, a few stand out that are worthy of a download.

Besides, we've seen Windows Live thing. Trust me, if XBL and PSN are successful with their micro transactions, you hermits will not be getting away with any much longer. M$ will probably make you pay a subscription to join some online community where you can share all your user created content or something. So I wouldn't be laughing too much right now if I were you.

Honestly the only thing I keep trying to figure out is how the PC market makes any money at all. All the PC gamers I know get their games free off Bittorrent, extra maps etc for free. I guess the market is just so huge that enough people actually pay for the game??

Anyways I don't think anyone ever expected extra content on PSN to be free, just the service itself. Was there not a bunch of drama about a year ago about how much Gran Turismo would actually cost you if you bought all the extra cars etc that they originally talked about????

You're asking how do you think the PC division survives.

Apart from the Sims franchise and WoW, I think games keep coming out for it since the PC is the safest to develop for. Considering the many pirated games, the illegal MMO servers and more sales on consoles, it is quite ironic.

But looking at the budget titles released on the PC, I think you can make blunders on that system, whereas on consoles, you only get one chance to really hit the industry.

I never said demos cost, I said they are free on pc. live for windows  steam owns it big time, m$ is failing to make live catch on while steam gets more and more games. race the wctt gameis one of the lastest exclusive steam games and the recent epxantion with new cars is free.

steam has many big devs/publisher games on it.

like activion, 2k games, bioware, value just to name a few

until live manages to beat stean live on vista isn't going to be very big. steam only needs all ubi and ea games to have basicly everything covered, also steam sells game that are very hard to find in stores.

Vista isn't going to be very big? Well there goes DX10 down the drain huh.

Look, M$ is a big bully. They'll get what they want. Even if it means trying to cut out Steam and getting a lawsuit from them etc etc. M$ will cause problems. They always do.

Btw, OS X Tiger owns Vista. Yet iMacs aren't exactly catching on, are they?

I mean, casuals will enter stores, and go "Ooooh Games for Windows! Yes!", and that's how M$ wins. Honestly, Steam is for the hardcore.

If there was any real "war" here, it'd be the hardcore vs. the casuals. And one of them is winning by a landslide.

Quite true, but USUALLY it is rather a bit harder on a console.I keep hearing rumors that you can copy 360 games using a DL recorder, but I find it hard to believe unless they are using the DVD flash crack. I won't flash my DVD drive because I have like 2 years left on my warranty and considering the hardware fails quite a bit, I sacrafice the chance at free games knowing at least I'll have a system for 2 more years.

On PC it is easier, download it, install it, usually using a provided keycode, or apply a patch/crack included with the iso.

I'm not talking about "Rockstar Presents Table Tennis" budget.

I'm talking about those Z-grade games. From indie developers. Obviously you're don't play adventure games on the PC (my fav PC genre).

Bioshock  why god why!

Meu2k7

Yeah, if it's a hassle to use on PC, I'm gonna stick with the X360 version.

Sometimes, what works on a console, doesn't work for PC.

In any case, I have Medieval II, and it's about 70 hours to play once through the Grand Campaign.

There's like a million countries I can play with. I play on average one hour a day. Looks like I'm going to play right through 'til September 25th, take a 6 month hiatus, then divide my time between Halo 3, Medieval II, University, and film making. Computers were suppose to make life easier, weren't they?

Hmmm, someone provided a link for it the other day, but I do agree its overexagurated, as im looking right now and see evidence for otherwise :S.

Halo 3's is exagurated?

I'm so confused, im just going to say "Screw" sales altogether.

STEAM does well, and EA does on the PC , alone with blizzard's and the Sims (EA I know).

Games do sell alot on the PC, theyre just near impossible to track in comparison, the industry isnt clinging on to survival, its in fact the life-support of gaming as a whole.

Look at Crysis, its getting 100% attention from Intel/Nvidia & Windows to get it running as good as possible, they all have big stakes in PC gaming.

(Rant wasnt aimed at you since you already know this :P)

People don't like paying if they can get it free legally.

Everytime I download a game, I feel guilty. But usually I can't get the game from stores because the ones I like are really hard to find.

Agreed but it won't stop since people buy those things that should be free. It also exists in PC gaming, amongst MMORPG's. Just compare Lineage 2 free content to Everquest 2 free content (which Everquest 2 doesn't have).

Meu2k7

Well af ew examples, Warcraft 3 had 4.5 Million pre-orders (Thats right, matching Halo 3) despite piracy on the PC

Really? Link? "Citation needed" on Wikipedia, so don't count on using that link.

Besides, Halo 3's 4.5 million preorders is a huge exaggeration, isn't it?

Yeah I'm more interested in the pre orders part.

Warcraft is popular, but wasn't that popular compared to Star Craft. I just can't beleive Warcraft III got 4.5 million pre orders. Even for Halo 3, the most anticipated game, it's a bit too much. That's over half Halo 2's sales. In any case, we shall see in the future.

Yeah, Microsoft wants to reboot (pun not intended) PC Gaming. Probably only to steal all our monnaiez. I got a Mac instead. But I bought Vista Ultimate to dual boot with. Wish more companies, games or not, developed for Apple.

According to you lems, PSN was never free to the consumer. CyanX73

LMFAO, I love how people come in randomly, don't bother reading a damn thing and just ASSUME a topic filled mostly with PC gamers was a stab by the evil Lemmings LOL.

They were free with Far Cry because they were user made. I don't mind paying for maps made by the dev, they employ people to make and play test them and they have to be paid.

tell me when you don't pay for pc game maps? many of them are made by devs. epic didn't wana charge but m$ is gready.

And you're on a Microsoft Operating System (tm).

What makes you think you'll escape their wrath?

Developing for Windows is free, and they get NO royalties.

Rember the HUGE court case - with the emotionally stuffed up Bill Gates?

They CANT charge for user made content.

XBL is a different situation. Msoft Milk it as much as they can. They get royalties for EVERYTHING.

Why not? Do you not play the game online.

I bought the new Vegas maps (everyone I know bought them), but you get thrown out if the host changes to one of the maps and you don't own it. I play it so much though, that the extra money was well spent.

Great game.:)

Umm, well if people are serious about pc gaming they buy a pc just for gaming. So its basically a console that plays pc games, but its a console that is like 3x the cost. So I don't think pc gamers can rub any gaming related costs in console gamers faces. Its going to take alot of map pack downloads to get anywhere near the cost you guys paid to buy a machine that needs to be replaced in 1 or 2 years time.

Woot! Jump on the bandwagon mate!

Final Cut Pro user here!

Kinda sucks I could have used this money to buy two computers with 8800 GTX and 2 gigs of ram each, including C2D 2.4ghz.

Ah well, you get what you pay for I guess. And seriously, OS X completely owns Vista. Everything is so stream lined. And that's not to mention Leopard is coming out soon.

Only time I dual boot is to play Medieval II and watch DreamScene wallpapers. The good ones are mesmerizing :).

the new resistance maps cost $$$ and this is only the start, just wait cows, it will be just like xbl soon, making you pay for everything.

http://gamesman.co.nz/news.php?id=3161

this is one reson why pc gaming > console gaming, you get new maps for free, along with every demo, mod

imprezawrx500

Oh noes, one game out of over a hundred has ONE THING that costs money online, and it took lmost a year for it to happen.

We're on the verge of a crisis. This was definitely thread-worthy.

He was acting like a random tool :P

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft

And the devs can charge if they wish. This is rare with PC gaming, as for over a decade extra content is supposed to boost the community + longevity of the game - and generally improve on it.

Hell No PC gamer would buy dev made content.

Even the BF2 booster packs didnt sell very well - even though they had LOADS of content.

LoL thats exacly what im thinking. Apple products are soo damn overpriced :P

I use OSX on a daily basis, and honestly im not a fan. at all. I much rather the functionality of my XP + windowblinds and star dock. Hell OSX seems to have more problems for me than my XP machine....

Never the less dual boot is tempting, and the ability to play MeTW2 on the go, or lounging on the couch would be awesome. Wicked, wicked game.

Maybe you're not a fan of OS X because it's so damn consumer friendly? Or in other words, noobified?

I think It goes OS X --> Windows --> Linux in terms of flexibility and customization, with the Linux users being the most tech savvy.

If only Apple had more game support huh, we'd have our problems solved

Because of downloadable content...? Reading that made you sound desprate for anything against the PS3's online service and it was very obvious.
