I'm just wondering, this is a general question for you or other PS2 owners out there: why is losing PS2 backwards compatibility a major deterrent for buying the 40GB when one can still play PS2 games on the PS2?

What happens on the day your PS2 dies? What happened to BC being a selling point? Wasn't that one of the most touted features of the PS3 over the 360? Is this going to be another case of "rumble is last gen"? It seems to me that all you are getting for your $400 is a 20gig PS3 minus the BC and plus another 20gigs. 20gigs is NOT worth $100, ESPECIALLY on a console that has a easily replaceable HDD.

r u nuts, £300 for a console, with no BC is a joke.. that is as far from being a good deal, as it gets. esp that the BC was done through software and not hardware, so there is no technical reason why it shouldn't have BC... and if there is, that means, sony are shipping inferior hardware

think abt it, the wii is £180 and is BC, the 360 w/harddrive is £280 and is BC, the ps3 is £300, and no BC,

From what I have seen SOny removes chips from the PS3 that read those games, BC can be added back later as a free download. And isn't the Wii 260? Is on amazon uk.

Me too. Ofcourse I knew the price would drop, i mean, consoles do that. But I bought mine in late January for $600, and it's not like I've been able to play all these awesome ps3 games. Now it's been 9 months since then. and there are STILL few awesome games, and it's $200 cheaper! WTF Sony? I'll won't buy your console next gen unless you do something amazing, which I doubt. And I always buy every console!

You honestly didn't seea price cut coming within a year? From the get go, I predicted it would go down to $400 and $450 for the 20 and 60 respectively, wrong but close. If Sony didn't have a price drop this year, they might aswell have pulled out.

I know a few people that are waiting for the price to drop on a PS3, they would have boughta 360 if it didnt drop in price this year. (They don't have money to afford both, they've loved all Playstation franchises so they wanted to stick with them)

But i'm sort of tempted, however its going to be very difficult to decide. Money isn't the issue, its time. I've only managed to play less than 30 games online in Halo 3, nowhere close to beating the campaign. The 360 has alot of games I want, PS3 aswell.

at first i was going to get it but now i sae the specs im just gona skip the ps3 this gen or until theres a ps3 att the right cost and right specs for it

Ummm...FAIL! The 360 has been out a year longer, they have more games than both the other systems, games come with time. The graphics are not bad on the PS3 and some cases equal or better. But graphics and game selection has little to do with price. The Blu Ray upped the costs of the PS3 a ton, they couldn't charge 399 at first, without the Blu Ray they could have...But they added it and now they are stuck.

Yeah, someone really hasn't been paying attention to Casey's thread. You know the one that says even without the headstart PS3 still hasn't passed with what the 360 Launched with. Yes this includes GS and GR scores.

You like that word fail don't you lol. Bottom line is this. I don't care whether Sony has Blu-Ray or not. If they can't get a full featured SKU on shelves at a good price then they will simply be stuck in 3rd place like they are now.

I tend to pack redundant hardware away. PSX, GC, Xbox, GB, GBC, GBA have all undergone this fate for me.

I would rather have one box that runs three libraries, than three seperate boxes each running their own libraries.

I tend to be a very neat person when it comes to my house, the less crap sitting around on my entertainment center the better.

Side note: Kind of sad for me being a huge supporter of the past two iterations of PS consoles (100+ game each), now I find myself waiting to even start supporting the third. :(

This is what I want

1. Wifi
2. Minimum 20GB HDD
3. Rumble
4. BC
5. PS1/PS2 Memory Card readers
6. $399

You know, those memory cards that were removed, that are on the 60GB PS3.....aren't PS2 ones. PS3 creates virtual memory cards for PS2 games. You can buy an adapter for $15 dollars that lets you transfer your saves (you can transfer them back too.)

The 40GB has Wifi, has a bigger HDD than 20GB, well rumble will come soon. If you want b/c, get the 60gb or the 80gb which will most probably take the price point of the 60gb once they are gone.

this question is mainly directed at people who have yet to take the plunge into next generation. with ps3 dropping so much and big holiday titles around the corner are you going to take the dive into next generation? the price drop is coming stateside the end of this month so this question is for everyone.-Renegade

i would get it if i save up but the thing is there is always a quality 360 game coming out which i HAVE to buy so i never get to save money

WiFi. Don't want it, don't need it. If I changed my mind I could buy a cheap wireless bridge that I could move to other consoles when I upgrade.

Wi-fi's too important. Much more so than PS2 BC.

The 40GB is intended for PS2 owners, and a wireless connection is too common a need to leave out. Sony probably learned that lesson from the 20GB, which had no wifi.

The DS has WiFi.....but it never worked in my home.

im pretty sure it is your router settings.

ds doesn't work with my router at all. i had to buy the adapter.

You're not the only one feeling cheated. Sure price drops and sku revisions are common but having Sony scramble their PS3s so much in less than a year will get you frustrated.

The 360 has three SKU's, and soon Xbox 360 "Arcade" will be introduced.

360 had 2 sku's for the first 1.5 years, not 4 sku's in 10 months and a $200 price drop. Plus, the arcade is still the core but with a memory and 5 arcade games.

Forget that then. Personally I'm just waiting until the Dual Shock 3 is out along with some better games. I'm not going to buy a console knowing that the controller is already obsolete. I can survive with 360 and Wii for now. And why no PS2 BC sorry but I need that man. Its the only way I can breathe....

The PS3 is and always has been better, three rings of death anyone? 33% fail rate? I'll go with something that won't break on me in 3 months! And the PS3 is getting great games all the time and more than the 360 next year as well! No BC is no big deal as I don't have any PS2 games anymore. I always planned on buying PS3 because the other 2 just don't seem feasable to me for several reasons; it's just a matter of when im going to buy one. At this point I still am not more enticed to buy a PS3 than I was one year ago.

Im not interested in the 40GB, it's a gimped piece of what the system is supposed to be. The PS3 was initally supposed to be a supercomputer...now this SKU everyone is going crazy about only has 2 USB ports, no card readers, and can't even play the greatest games of last gen at all?:|

Good thing is, this new Sku does mean the 80GB will drop in price to $500, which is much more appealing to me. Yet the game library is still mediocre. I can't think of a single exclusive currently out that I would spend sixty-freaking-dollars on (There are The Elder Scrolls IV GOTY and Ninja Gaiden S, but...).

Folklore had me interested but after the reviews Game Republic has dissapointed again like I predicted, and I seriously doubt Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank Future are going to exceed anyone's expectations and make PS3 a system-seller, those are not the two games that will cut it. The price drop is good, but Playstation 3 definitely needs those"Halo"-app games if they ever want me to come out of PSP-Hibernation and step-up to the next gen of their consoles, and win this war.

I'll get one when its about $300-$350, which is hopfully by next aprilMad_Rhetoric

I'm way glad my PS3 has BC and 60 gigs, the new one is lame. I guess you can always drop in a new HDD but what can you do to fix the BC problem?

Maybe it won't be as much of a problem as it would have been for early adopters as more games come out the BC thing is not as much as a big deal as it would have been a year ago. Still a pretty bad decision overall.
