TASTE IN GAMES = SUBJECTIVE

The only true winner of SYSTEMWARS is defined by which console wins the sales battle.

Cows and Lemmings are obviously in severe, mass damage control

dustin-diamond
Not damage control - just feel it's unfair to compare a hand held ( small enough and the graphics - lol ) to full blown this gen consoles ! See what I mean? ;)

lol pwned!!!!!!!!

lmao worst attempt at ownage Ive ever seen.

Sounds to me like you are " whistling past the grave yard " but that really does'nt work - you still look scared - LMAO;)

Graveyard is that place where consoles who get crushed in sales go... like the 360 or PS3 for instance.

Again........ lol - one of the consoles has sold more to date than the other two combined - care to take a stab at the answer lmao;)

In other topics, when someone claims the Wii is winning, there are two common responses..

1) It is not a next-gen console.

2) Sales don't matter.

The latter is what baffles me. If there is such a thing as a console war, in which the company that sells the most consoles wins, then how can one think that sales don't matter?

Of course, one may have his/her opinions to which console is better. That is subjective. Personally, I cannot contribute anything to this because I do not own any of the current gaming machines. But if we are to think there is such a thing as a console war, then by all means the Wii is winning because we must go by what the sales charts tell us, and one does not need to own any of these machines to see this. Also, I am keeping this strictly to the three current major consoles. Not the DS, PS2, etc.

One more thing that must be noted is nobody has won anything yet. Even though the Wii is winning, it has not won. Vice versa with the PS3. It may not be selling as much but by no means has it lost.

Now we get to the former statement. I believe the Wii to be the official next generation Nintendo console. To say otherwise is unfounded. Some may say that because it lacks the power of the 360 and PS3, it cannot be. Are we to believe that Sony and MS set the standard for what should be considered a next-gen console? Does next-gen define itself by power or timeline? Or both?

Either way, have fun with your gaming machines.

God bless, Maiden out.

Sales do matter but what matters more is what sells and to what audience. The GBA was a huge seller, way more then the PS2 yet it didnt pull games away from it, why because it was different hardware and appealed to a different audience. The Wii is the same way. Its a system that has seperated itself from the competition by using weaker hardware and motion controlling, that is great for Nintendo but not so good for game developers. 3rd party game developers wanna make games multiplat because that is how they make their money, by feeding off of all the gaming community, but the Wiis hardware and controls are so different it makes porting a game that has the 360/PS3 hardware in mind almost impossible. That is why you have the Wii feeding off of PS2 ports while the 360/PS3 get games like Assasins Creed, GTA, Army of Two, Darkness, etc... Then to top it off the Wii focuses on two major genres, mini games and party games. So what you get is 3rd party companies either avoiding it or just dumping some gimmicky crap on the Wii. The Wii is like the DS and GBA a great system, especially if your a Nintendo fan, but if your not a huge Nintendo fan, you wouldnt be happy with it being your ONLY gaming system.

Nice insight. I appreciate your view.

Thanx and I appreciate a civilized conversation over SW, kudos to you.

If you speak of sales in a general term then it should be noted that whatever has sold the most isn't necessarily the best. It is, simply put, accepted by the majority of consumers. Given these two examples: DS and PSP. Hands down the PSP is the better of the two when it comes to technical prowess and functionality. However the DS has been accepted by the consumers and this is proven in the amount of sales generated.

I have seen systems in the past that surpassed their competition (of that generation) and yet did not garner consumer acceptance to be declared "the winner" in terms of sales. I think sales are a major factor in the public eye as to which system to purchase. Whoever sells more systems is viewed by those who have not committed to buying one and in turn helps them decide which to get. Especially when it comes to parents buying them for the kids. Why would a parent buy a system that has not had a successful sale rate when they could get what is popular at the time?

The PS2 still sells for this exact reason. It has been surpassed by both the gamecube and original xbox in terms of specs and yet it still sels because of its position on the popularity charts. The acceptance of a system basically is the driving force behind 3rd party support. Look at systems of the past. 2600 vs Intellivision vs Coleco. 2600 was the winner not because of its quality of games but by its price and popularity by the time the other two came to market. Same can be said for the original NES (vs master system) and genesis (vs nses and turbografx).

It can be argued that the snes was more popular than the genesis but it didn't get the top spot until way into the genesis lifespan. Actually it was towards the end when sega was trying to corner the market on everything by releasing the cd, 32x, gamegear and eventually saturn all before 95. This strategy fragmented swga sales because of too many choices from one company.

Bottom line is sales DO matter!

I was under the impression the Wii was at least twice as powerful as the GC. If this is true, then how is your statement valid?

The current wii games look worse than the old gamecube games (in Kurt angle voice) OH IT'S TRUE !!

If the wii is 2x stronger then the games don't show it. I have not seen 1 wii game that could not be done on the old xbox. So where is all this power in the wii-mote ???

Let's be fair. The system has been out for about 6 months. Give time to the developers. Maybe you will see something that will surprise you.

And there is no power in the Wiimote. It's only a controller.

I will say the same about the PS3. Give this system some time as well. Who knows what will happen. Maybe there will be more exclusives and it will jump on top.

The wii has one game I want that could be done on the gamecube and that's paper mario. Really the wii is a dumping ground for devs to make a fast buck. That wii-mote will make ports difficult on devs and the power of the wii will also restrict devs ability to port games. The wii is the next gen console of the gamecube but offers no tangible improvement over the previous system. Hence my gamecube with new controller in sexy package for more $$$ statement.

A great marketing move by nintendo I personally won't buy a wii till the price drops to at least $150.

Few people in SW take into account the relative effect of sales, for a Nintendo platform with typically low 3rd party performance sales mean a lot, for MS who have games selling in an insane attach ratio to the machine, sales don't really matter much at all, as evidenced by the level of support the xbox and now the 360 had and have in relation to puny marketshare. So to summarise, do sales matter? Well it depends if you are a Lemming, Cow or Sheep.

Sales are fine and dandy,

But I think Metroid deserves better graphics then what the Wii can offer.

It's such a shame.

Dm1uciano

But Metroid also deserves the control which only Wii can provide... so it evens out. Though, I'd cream myself to see Metroid Prime 1 in 1440 x 900 widescreen with full anistropic filtering and all high res textures, etc.

I don't see how the Wii Remote will make Metroid any better. If anything, I think it'll make the game worse, gameplay wise.

I dodn't see how better graphics will make it any better either.

I could care less what it sells.  As long as they have a bunch of BS DS ports, last gen ports with tacked on controls, and just an all around weak library, I'll pass.

When the console in question is clearly aiming for a different demographic, and it's system is $150 less, and the company says it's not competing with Sony and MS.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. Nintendo is the only company that is currently making money off their system. MS turns a slight profit by price gouging for their accessories and online play, to offset the losses they take on the console. Sony is losing money, and will continue to do so for at least the next 2 or 3 years.

Sales are fine and dandy,

But I think Metroid deserves better graphics then what the Wii can offer.

It's such a shame.

dackchaar

But Metroid also deserves the control which only Wii can provide... so it evens out. Though, I'd cream myself to see Metroid Prime 1 in 1440 x 900 widescreen with full anistropic filtering and all high res textures, etc.

I don't see how the Wii Remote will make Metroid any better. If anything, I think it'll make the game worse, gameplay wise.

I dodn't see how better graphics will make it any better either.

then u must be blind.

The Xbox 360 has been making money on each console sold for a while now.

"In contrast, the HDD-equipped Xbox 360 has a manufacturing and materials total of $323.30, based on an updated estimate using costs in the fourth quarter of 2006. This total is $75.70 less than the $399 suggested retail price of the Xbox 360."

http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2006/11/16/ps3-loses-up-to-306-per-unit-xbox-360-profits-76-per-sale.htm

Plus we don't know that it will take the PS3 two or three years to start turning a profit. Sony are constantly working on making the PS3 cheaper to make.

No, I'm telling you that Sony is losing money on the PS3. You're the one who used the analogy.  The PS3 costs $800 to produce, and they sell it for $600.  Where is the profit?

I also hate it when people say that the Wii isn't competing with the 360/PS3 in the current next gen console war because they consider it a "last-gen" console. Also, now that the PS3 is selling great in Europe, sales all of the sudden matter to Sony fans. But they didn't care before-hand.

all I know is that it sounds like most people bought a wii based on sales. The console wars involve xbox360 vs ps3 and not the wii at all which is why its sneaking through with high numbers. From the consoles I have (PS3) and plan on getting (xbox360) sales do not matter to me. Also when nintendo64 was first released, this fan boy told me it would be the best selling console. That honor ended up going to the PS1. Now that same fan boy is telling me the wii will be the best selling console. I predict that nintendo will end up in third place again.

And by the way when I make a car that cost me $300,000 I'll sell it at least for $500,000 so dont think that any company is losing when a company has all the tools to create some products and for your sake when sony drops the price to $500 that will be a loss

It's one thing to be impressed by sales, and to inform people about them. It's another thing to use said sales in evidence that your console is better than another.

I agree. As I said before, if you were to stick to a system war, then the Wii/360 - whichever - is winning.

Which one has the best of quality is a different story.

You agree? Quality is determine how? Let's think about this. Is my value of a good game the same as yours? Bigger Picture. Do your values set the standard on what is good quality of a video game or console?

Dude, the PS3 costs about 800 USD to make, and Sony is selling it for 600 USD. Fact is that Sony doesn't make a profit out of PS3 sales. Now, here's the thing, they make money when some developer makes a game for their console, and if the game sells well, they make more money.

Nintendo, on the other hand, makes profit of the system sales, plus game sales. AND, Nintendo also makes their own games, and when their own games sell well they make more money than if a third party developed game sells well on their system.

The Wii is a next gen console and a good one at that. It's not got the graphics but it's a next gen console. What might give the advantage in the long run also is the XBOx360 and PS3 aren't all that different in terms of games or graphics. Nintendo is doing something different and although people say it's not gonna last. It's sold about over 5 million in a few months. Everytime I go into a game shop I don't see a console. This tells that the Wii is fun and everybody must want one. The Wii is different and from the way things are going it's working and selling better than PS3 and XBox360.

I have a Wii. I use to play it alot when it first came out. Wii Sports was just awesome. Now, since I got the PS3 with VF5, and Tekken DR I hardly play the Wii. It still gets played by my girlfriend alot, but for a gamer like me it really was a fad.

may be it is true that sony will take a percentage of the profit of the game even so they dont sell the system with a loss to wait for the games it is impossible believe moi.

Yes, I agree that the number of X sold does not mean that X is the best of quality. It is as simple as that.

My apples might not be as tasty as yours but there is always the possibility I will sell more than you.

That is all I was implying.

Bah, I need to rephrase the first statement.

Number of X sold does not determine the quality of X. It is two seperate issues.

Sorry about the screw-up.
