Yeah, pretty weak. My graphics card alone has 4GB of video memory, not to mention 8GB of system memory. The PS4's operating system must eat up a lot of memory. I guess that's why I still see pop-in in Infamous Second Son.
I read some time ago that it was 4.5 with 1GB virtual/flexible or something. So 5.5GB in total, a little more than the X1. Dont think either system will have any problems with ram for a while.
And the games already look as great as they do. When that's reduced, and the OS footprint lessens like on the PS3, devs will have even more to play with. Good stuff for Sony to future proof the memory management.
4.5 with 1GB of drive space for page files. Do bare in mind that the HSA/hUMA instruction set on the APU means that there is 0 need for items to be duplicated in memory for object replication. This means the PS4 is almost twice as memory efficient as the current generation of PCs and PC software.
Also, this is ancient as ****.
Old news. There's also a gig of flexible RAM available to devs if they need it and future optimisations will make the OS footprint smaller.
For a console that was originally planned for 4GB, and the games out or nearly out mostly developed under that framework, I can't wait for how the games will look in the near future!

I do agree that both consoles should do fine RAM wise but nowhere in this article is there a mention of virtual/flexable anything. Infamous is stunning though so I think we will be ok for a while.

Coupled with that tablet CPU and low end graphics card it's pretty easy to see that there's little room for improvement this gen. The cycle has just started and the devs are already hamstrung into cutting corners.
They'll get the basics: anti-aliasing and maybe 1080 at a push but that'll be as far as it goes. Medium/low settings compared to PC on multi-plats this early in the gen? I think so.
Get @tormentos to explain this he's usually the best though I recall ND and other saying GP is now 5.5-6GB
Misleading thread title. It doesn't say anything about their allowances on the ram just what seemingly SP used for Infamous:SS.
Yes . Rest of the memory is for social crap and OS . They originally had plans to go with total 4GB ram , later they decided to go with 8GB .
ok let me get this right
6cores 4.5gb of ram,
No 8k textures for mapping, No 4k textures or 2k textures for models
Characters 60k-30k poly with 1-4 LOD Desilin with the most with 60k
While Ryse
5 cores 3.6gb Ram
8k textures for mapping 2k textures for models
Characters 40k-160k polys No LOD one Rig per character
What in the hell they use all that ram for? and they are really pushing the ps4 hard already
Up to 5 but the OS will be reduce just like the PS3 was, sony just play it safe, lack of memory was the reason why party chat never made it to the PS3.

This to HSA and hUMA actually reduce the constant copy paste done on PC so memory is use more effectively.
im pretty sure that no games release need more and when/if its needed in the future they'll free some.

Haha, didn't expect anything else than you trying to spin this in a good way.
I don't see how it's bad when the games speak for themselves? No spin needed.

lol...

Most advances will be on a software level, with the development of more efficient global illumination, tessellation, and new forms of AA that work well while not being system drains (like Metro LL's custom AA).

CryEngine 4.

No Ryse character use 160K polygons it was going to be 150k and they downgrade to 85k.,just like they downgrade from 1080p to 900p.
Ryse is a confined game when you can do nothing but hack and slash,Infamous is a sand box game in full 1080p with higher frames than Ryse to,while looking better and having better AA to and incredible particle effects the games are not even close,Ryse at its current stated would be 1080p on PS4 more than 30 FPS,Infamous on xbox one would be 720p with drop into the teens with luck.
The ram usage on PS4 is different from your average PC GPU,since those require constant flushing, and copy and paste something not need in on PS4 so the memory is more effectively use,a game that use 4.5Gb on PS4 running on a normal GPU can take much more basically because many of the code had to be copy and paste over an over.
Also sony play it safe with memory this time, last time the PS3 got gimped because of ram issues, sony reduce the OS so much that Party chat wasn't possible the OS of the PS3 was 120MB on 2006,and now is down to 50MB,that is more than half the usage shape by sony.
They originally had plans to go with total 4GB ram
Idiots to even consider that.

An open world game has to tile everything in and can't run huge textures over the entire world...
Can't compare it to rise because rise has linear areas that allow for 8k textures
Its funny to see people argue about something they don't understand.

...or you can look at what M$ & Sony accomplished with just 500MB of ram last gen.
I doubt the OS requires so much RAM all the time, they have probably set a high limit incase they will add more features later on, it will shrink, just like on the PS3. The biggest reason the PS3 didn't get party chat was not the RAM, but the Cell CPU. They didn't have enough available resources on it. The OS footprint on the PS4 will probably get smaller as the gen progresses, but for now devs have enough to play with.
They were initially going for 4GB GDDR5 RAM because of price, which would have ment that the OS footprint probably couldn't be much bigger than on the PS3 at the time. I would much rather have that than the 8GB slow DDR3 RAM like in the X1.
oh my god Sheen's actually think that El tormo has some sort of tech knowledge instead of just copy and pasting other people.
lol they really are that stupid.
@tormentos: the minitor has 160k polys this from pdf. for ryse there wasnt to much to do in infamous despite it being open world torm go get a ps4 or x1 play both games like i said earlier infamous is a great HERO game but as an open world game its cringe worthy. Please go read the tech behind Ryse and you too will ask the question but maybe not because you be defending games for systems you dont have or havent played
