I've Played Both FFXI and WOW for 3 years each. FFXI I had a 75BLM, 75WHM, 75SMN. WOW I had a 70 warlock, 70 shadow priest, and a 70 Paladin. I enjoyed both, however I would have to say FFXI was the better experience for me, it had more Comraderie, you had to have a group of ppl to get anything accomplished in the game, and when you finally completed those month long quest of getting Sky or Sea access, there was a sence of accomplishment and relief. I also enjoyed the end game of FFXI more, cause you weren't guaranteed to even get a shot at a king or other HNM, but when you did, and you were lucky enough to get a your koeing or your Dalmatica it was much more rewarding. in WOW I never got that sence of accomplishment or to the full extent of Comraderie that FFXI gave me even when my WOW Guild and I were the 3rd guild on our server to take down Illidan.
IMO WOW died alittle when TBC came out and it died even more with WOTLK, I quit playing WOW a few weeks after WOTLK. and I feel that the only reason why many ppl say WOW is better is because of the PVP aspect thrown in with the PVE aspect, can create some hella fun times.
I always felt WOW was more geared to kids and young adults with its casual solo style gameplay, while FFXI was more geared to the older audience with its team based skillchaining, magic bursting gameplay.
Both are great games / time sinks, but if I was to start fresh with either game it would be FFXI, much more rewarding experience.
I've been itching for a new MMO since I quit WOW around 2 years ago, and FFXIV is looking great and I can't wait to step into the world of Eorza (sp).
p.s. WOW is for instant gratification, and FFXI is for someone that just wants to play for along time, either way the real game doesn't start till you get to the endgame.
