So the 8th gen war has ended and PS4 slaughtered everyone?

Not that we didn't already know the outcome but damn, Sony mopped the floor with the competition. Unlike with the PS3 they didn't lose trucks of money with the PS4. The console is the most powerful, best-selling, has the most games and is very likely the most profitable one too.

Xbox One did well enough but ultimately could never fully recover from that 2013 debacle.

Nintendo threw in the towel with the Wii U and I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 outsells the Switch too if we only start counting from the release date of the Switch.

So is the war over? What else is left?

It's been three years, four if you count the Wii U, and Microsoft still hasn't played their Ace yet.

Scorpio is not going to make Microsoft the generation winner, but it could flip the situation on the second half if they go about it right and start delivering on games, that could put them in contention with Sony.

Do you think they can come back? Apparently they are 25M behind which is huge. They would have to go on a tear and have a stranglehold in NA and beat them in Europe too. Japan is pretty much a lost cause.

A more powerful console by itself is not gonna be enough for a comeback by Microsoft, especially if its like $50 - $100 more expensive than the Pro.

Microsoft needs more exclusives that are actually above average in quality.

Switch has no chance selling as well as the PS4, no chance in hell. I'd be surprised if it does much better than the Gamecube to be honest.

Not going to happen. He has been singing the tone of a MS revival since 2014.

That's a big ass gap, but if they come in at the right price and start delivering on games, market it right, and everyone becomes aware this is the definitive system on the block, they could become the progressive market leader going forward, the potential exists.

I don't think MS cares about winning the system wars anymore to do all that. I think it is clear that their focus is now to shift towards PC and make Windows the definite OS for gaming. Since other companies like Valve and CDProjekt are starting to try to diversify the operating system support of their stores to take the gaming monopoly from Windows they're now more worried about that than fighting against Sony and Nintendo. I think everything MS is doing points towards that. I bet they'd like to also dominate the console market but they know it is too difficult now while Sony is active. In the meantime the gaming support for other OS's like Mac and Linux is in its infancy and it'll be easier to tackle that.

That is their biggest issue right now, they need games. Scorpio is coming into this late and just having the most powerful console will not convince the numbers they need to abandon Sony.

Honestly doubt the Switch is 'ninth gen.' In fact, between it and Scorpio and even Pro, I'm not even sure that traditional game generations will exist any more.

?

I'm saying the Switch as it exists doesn't deserve to be called a ninth gen console, and the Scorpio and Pro blur the generations line. How that can be twisted into 'damage control' is beyond me, but hey, go nuts.

They don't blur a thing just like the 3DS XL didn't blur a thing and is still very much a 3DS and part of the same generation.

out of the consoles.

well you could argue that gen nine started with the PS4 pro and gen 9 is basically the pro vs switch vs scorpio.

but yes. the PS4 clearly cleaned up. sony learned from their catastophic mistakes with the PS3 and learned well. built a very developer friendly system. clever choice in hardware and a focus on gaming meant they could offer more of what counts for the same as, or less than, the competition. they have built a solid first party (though this still needs to get better).

combine that with incompetent competition from MS and nintendo (its bad when you announce that you will charge for online play and no on notices because they are laughing at MS for the open goals they left) and the PS4 just became the go to console for everyone looking for a console to play games on.

Because you're trying to claim gens don't exist anymore to save face when the Switch will inevitably get destroyed by actual 9th gen consoles by saying it wasn't even competing with them anyway.

I'm already saying the Switch isn't powerful enough to be gen 9. It being 'destroyed' by actual gen 9 consoles in terms of, I presume, power is a give, it is 'destroyed' by gen 8 consoles. This isn't damage control, it's called a clear statement of facts.

Generation 8 is not over. You can call it 8.5 or something but its still 8. Because if PRO/Switch and Scoprio is considered Generation 9 , that would be upsetting to say the least.

I would disagree there- I wouldn't say it will definitely come in first, no matter what, but I will say that I don't think it's bound to come in last. 3DS, as an example, started slow and poorly, and ended with 70 million units (and counting)- we'll see how Nintendo pushes the Switch. it being their only piece of hardware on the market, they cannot afford for it to fail, and I imagine they will push it with everything they've got (as opposed to the Gamecube and Wii U eras, when they just ignored the consoles to focus on their more successful handhelds instead).

fifa legends are wildly expensive, you don't have stuff like that on the ps4. If I would buy them all in the beginning of the season, I would probably spend like 10k.

Playstation doesn't have exclusivity deals for content that is that expensive.

You could get some of them by playing, trading and management though. But you need to be very good and you won't get them in the beginning of the season of course.

Because a gen is what separates consoles. PC has no gen and is therefore not participating in any generation wars. That and nobody owns PC except for the gamers.

Break it down in to the generational eras, PC is still far larger than any console

From January 2014 to February 2015 Steam alone increased active users from 75 Million to 125 Million almost as many PS4 that have sold in 3.5 years. That's just one year for one company serving the PC community. Unfortunately Steam haven't declared active account numbers since Feb 2015

Annual revenues for global software and hardware sales are larger than all consoles combined.

More good to great games (75+ on MC) have come out on PC than any single current gen console over the same time period (may even be more than the combined total but I can't be bothered counting it up)

More than anything else though, PC being a part of this board makes it valid. It's system wars not console wars.

The 3DS had no real direct competitor aside from the Vita that was DOA and the mobile market that was not quite directly in competition with it.

The Switch will have to deal with two giants with a huge chunk of market share and a larger library. It will start handicapped and will face a much tougher fight.

In the absolute worst case, I think Nintendo will rebrand the system and push it as a handheld instead of a console.

It really wasn't in doubt in terms of objective measures. The system gets more games, more exclusives, and has the commercial success in comparison to the other consoles.

1- Generation only apply to consoles. Not PC. Sales of individual consoles can be broken down along with revenues, time frame etc. Same cannot be applied for PC which for all intents and purpose should include Mac and even tablet sales when it comes to hardware. Nobody does that because you cannot just pigeon-hole the PC into a single niche like consoles.

2. You can't compare a bunch of free Steam accounts that may or may not be active with 300-400$ PS4 sold.

3. Of course they are because unlike consoles PC's don't have generations. Crappy desktops from 2004 are still widely used to play F2P games that account for the bulk of the revenues of PC gaming. That's why trying to directly compare consoles to PC across generations is a fool's errand. PC has no generation to speak of.

4. I know this isn't Console Wars but Console Wars is a sub-war of System Wars. That's why I said "8th gen". There is no 8th gen PC. Crysis 3 on consoles is a 7th gen title. Crysis 3 on PC still looks better than 99% of 8th gen console games and by console standards is an 8th gen game. That's why it's pointless to include PC in anything about generations. PC doesn't have generations.

PS4 is the most successful 8th gen system. PC is the most successful system period.

It's been three years, four if you count the Wii U, and Microsoft still hasn't played their Ace yet.

Scorpio is not going to make Microsoft the generation winner, but it could flip the situation on the second half if they go about it right and start delivering on games, that could put them in contention with Sony.

As much as I am for an optimistic outlook, Microsoft has been making some mistakes recently and I feel like we shouldn't let it slide. Microsoft needs to stop their ****, right now.

People can go around and play the wiser 'devils advocate' as much as they want.... but MS is busy making a mess, no matter how you want to slice it.

No, PC, as always, won. Ps4 won for everyone who only owns one system and doesn't want a Pc. As soon as you have a PC, the 3DS or WiiU are a much better choice. Even the Vita offers much more that isn't available on Pc.

The 8th generation is not over, Nintendo doesn't even count anymore. Or we can simply say that console generations entirely are over (especially if Sony and MS just keep updating their machines without moving to a new generation). In either case, LOL at the idea of Switch being a next gen console.

The major problem with this fallacy is that consoles no longer have traditional generations either. Console generations ended with the PS4 Pro and the up coming Scorpio will hammer the final nail in that coffin. There will be no '9th generation' just further hardware revisions mostly because it's ridiculously expensive to create a AAA game for current consoles with a large user base, let alone for a single new 'generation' console with very limited user base for several years after launch.

Consoles are now HTPC's with locked hardware and specific manufacturer O/S's, it's to even say that for Xbox now.

On the Switch thing, Nintendo have never followed the generational track like Sony and MS have. If you want to declare PS4's victory in the console wars there are only two companies in that fight and Sony had that won within a year of the PS4 and Xbox One being released.

The gen isn't over. Switch isn't next gen not even by a long shot, it's just Nintendo clowning around.

We are still 3+ years into the 8th gen. PS4 Pro and Scorpio are gen 8.5

That depends whether or not the Pro and Scorpio will have support for longer than the standard PS4 and X1. For now the Scorpio has yet to be released and the Pro is for all intents and purposes a PS4. It still is very much an 8th gen system.

Of course Nintendo has always followed suit except for the Wii U because it had horrible timing. The Wii was failing and they had to release something to rejuvenate their market. It failed even harder and they yet again released something much faster than anyone else to recapture a fleeing market.

It is a next gen handheld and since it's much more powerful than the 3DS and the Vita, I don't see how anyone can deny it

The Scorpio is still to be released but yes, as of now, PS4 has won/is winning about as easy as they can.

Besides the fact that this thread dumb, there is no 9th gen. Console generations are done.
