Now that the real footage of The Last Of Us has come out out there is something you should pay attention to. The lighting in particular is suspect.

In the original announcement trailer from last year at the VGAs you will notice that they are using realtime Global Illumination and GodRays. (assuming this was "realtime". They carefully worded their trailer as "captured from PS3")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJt-mlLk10k&feature=plcp

The following is what you will see in the trailer:

Look at the godrays in the following pics, and the light bouncing off the floor and illuminating everything

Such beautiful godrays comming in from the window

look at the global illumination light bouncing off of Ellie's hand and illuminating the knife

Look at Joel and his attacker's illuminated bodies

And again.

Its important to note that this hallway is the SAME area in the game as in the E3 demo below

Godrays again

Yet compare it to the new footage thats come out and you get:

A mixture comprised of (mostly) prebaked, with some dynamic lightsources but NO Global Illumination or godrays.

Wow, we are standing by a window.....where are those beautiful godrays from the pics above? :?

Joel is outside now, but you would think they were indoors with the prebaked lighting. Why isnt everything illuminated? :(

It is important to note that the following screencaps are from the SAME room/area as the original reveal trailer at the VGAs

We all remember the infamous Uncharted 3 trailer ND sent to IGN that was apparently running at 60fps, and ND/ damage controlled it saying it was "a mistake" (read, they sent out dev kit footage and got caught).

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-what-if-uncharted-3-ran-at-60-fps

Oh well. Its not even coming out this year anyways, and heres to hoping it gets delayed because a PS4 version is in the works, wit DAT global illumination/godrays.

Anyways

Inb4 personal attacks on me by cows

Inb4 I am a "lemming" (Just like Stevo, every other person who isnt a sony drone, along with Eurogamer, Edge magazine, and Tom Mcshea)

Inb4 I am not only a "lemming" but a "scared" lemming (im buying this game but wutever)

Cows, please do what you do best

I noticed godrays when Ellie jumped down from the window when entering the bulding.

Here's the video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kbLOokeC3VU#t=115s

Notice how when Ellie jumps down, the godrays react dynamicly. So did I kill this thread?

PS3 games awlays use fake stuff to impress and they are never like those in game

There is nothing to see here, that is the same for all PS3 exclusives

There was no realtime GI in the original trailer. The things you pointed out are either baked GI, or not GI at all. There were also light shafts (or "god rays") in the E3 demo, you can see them right here when Ellie climbs through the window.

Anything else?

Well what you saw at the VGA was a trailer and this is a demo so maybe they didn't put everything in yet? I would wait until I see the finished product before I start throwing alarms up.

You're comparing a trailer made up of pre-rendered footage (not gameplay), to gameplay footage. You could really try a little harder.

Well it depends what you mean by "real time". The trailer says "captured from a PS3", but thats how all trailers are. They capture the raw frames into frame dump and they compile the trailers from that, so in that sense every cinematic trailer like that isnt realtime.

But one thing I do know is that NaughtyDog's lights (even the baked ones) are all baked on using global illumination in the production phase. This has been true since the first uncharted.

And yes, there is GI in the original trailer. The question is whether it was "real time" or not.

It's a work in progress demo and ND always tweak their engine right before release so why don't you just relax. Also one important thing to note, the demo uses a new technique called realtime Indirect shadow. It's the first time ever to have used in a console game, so yeah quit whining.

Every screen was captured from the trailers. You are free to post your own screens if you want to ;)

I told you. I chose screens that had a both had either a window in them, or light shining in through a window so you could see the global illumination illuminating the area around it.

But then again, im sure you have no idea what any of this means, so I wont waste my time with you.

He just PMed me:|

I actually feel a bit bad for you. So I decided to throw you a helpful hint out of my common sense.

If you want to troll like you do, then try to troll with something people can't easily find the real facts to counter the made up nonsense you decided to post that paticular time. Like for The Last of Us. You could call it a movie game or something. Because that's based soley on opinion, that can't really be argued against. If you don't want to go that route, then you could always attack something that we don't know one way or another yet. Like the AI. We don't know exactly how well it'll work. I mean, it looks like it'll be great, but there's plenty of room to poke holes in it until the reality of it is unveiled.

So there's your lesson on basic logic. Hope it serves you well.8)

You want to try logic for once? Let's try logic. Global illumination is a lighting system designed to create real life like lighting in games. It is notable for using a diffused, cloud like system to allow for realistic differences of lighting from dark to light spots. Of which I, nor other people, see used anymore in the trailer than in the demo screengrabs. What I do see, is a dramatic difference in the overall contrast created by the scenery. Having seen both the trailer and demo, I have enough common sense to see you picked specific screens to try to create a misperception that there was a major difference, when there is not. Want to try again on the personal insults? Because for someone so critical of them, you do throw them out a lot.

I am well aware of what Global Illumination is. I have no need to be educated on the matter.

Like I said, I posted a pretty wide amount of screengrabs, from pretty much every part of both trailers. If you dont feel my selection of screenshots fit your standard, you are welcome to chose your own. Both trailers are in the OP for you. ;)

Also, funny I dont remember calling you any names :?

The trailer was from the game engine directly from the PS3 and it looks better than ALL games on other consoles and the PS3 itself, even Uncharted 3.

Lems are having a tough time, aren't they? They have no games and are pissed that The Last of Us is heading only on PlayStation 3.

I wish they had shown some monsters

I almost fell asleep with the human enemies AGAIN

I mean they did it in 3 games already, why not change the enemies a little bit so the world does not feel dull and more of the same

There are like 10.000.000 games using human enemies, so they could as well cancell it if it is going to be human encounters only

The TC makes good points and backs them up nicely. The rest of you ND fanboys...rely on insults to make up for your lack of solid arguments. Adorable! I will argue that, the earlier footage wasn't game play...rather in-engine cut scenes or rather (captured from the PS3 as they put it)...usually those CAN look better and add more to them. You only have to look at Uncharted 2's cut scenes with some effects NOT even realtime, but a mixer. Cutscenes of course can be made to look better, due to rendering less compared to gameplay. I could be wrong on this, but it's just what i think is the case.

Epic fail. And your obsession with hating cows is just weird. We need a new term to describe it.

I wish they had shown some monsters

I almost fell asleep with the human enemies AGAIN

I mean they did it in 3 games already, why not change the enemies a little bit so the world does not feel dull and more of the same

There are like 10.000.000 games using human enemies, so they could as well cancell it if it is going to be human encounters only

loosingENDS

People seemed to like it so much that it has nearly 3x more views on youtube then halo 4

If there is anything I've learnt from ND games, it's that they are the absolute masters of integrating scripted events in gameplay without taking control away from the player. eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAqS75fiS7Y

I noticed godrays when Ellie jumped down from the window when entering the bulding.

Here's the video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kbLOokeC3VU#t=115s

Notice how when Ellie jumps down, the godrays react dynamicly. So did I kill this thread?

You would have if they didn't decide to just ignore your evidence.

No, im actually right. ;)

I provided proof to back my statements up.

Unless this:

Looks like this:

To you. All of which were screen capped from both trailers.

But I know.....Sony is god....NaughtyDog can do no wrong....

wraigth

I didnt pick and choose screens. I picked a screen that was indoors and was by a window:|

(although you most likely dont even know what Global Illumination is)

StrongDeadlift

You choose a screen shot, that is next to a window, that the sun isn't even shining towards, and you expect sun shafts? Are you really that dense?

Yeah it blows my mind as well.

Long as the gameplay is exactly the same, I don't give a damn. Arguing about graphics is tiring, and never, ever goes anywhere.

That's so very true, but the Last of Us is not scripted. Or at least what we saw in the demo wasn't scripted. The A.I is wholey dynamic, and actually effects gameplay, and alters encounters. This is something revolutionary at play in Last of Us. *from IGN preview: "So, I was a bit disappointed when Naughty Dog started the same demo behind closed doors. That is, until the seven-minute runthrough blossomed into a 17-minute showcase. While Naughty Dog focused on beating the hell out of people head-on at the Sony show, it turns out you can tackle The Last of Us in a number of different ways. The first change was an innocuous one. In the conference demo, Ellie references a movie poster for "Dawn of the Wolf," and Joel blows past it. In the behind closed doors demo, he doesnt. Instead he stops and has a conversation about it. Naughty Dog told me that these moments are there for gamers who want more of the story -- who want to get to know these characters. In this instance, Ellie asks Joel if the girl gets "gutted" at the end, and Joel scoffs, telling her it's a "dumb teen movie." Ellie asks Joel why he saw it then, he grumbles, and the group is off. In another interesting change, Joel looked at the bridge before Ellie asked him about it in the private demo, so the conversations from the conference never happened. OK, so you know how in the conference demo Joel and Ellie immediately went left in the old hotel? That wasn't how it went in my private demo. They scavenged more and that ladder wasn't there. The duo had to find a way up to the stairs to continue moving through the hotel. After scoping the place out, Joel spotted a ladder, rolled over a laundry cart, and boosted Ellie up on it to grab the tool. If Joel hadn't spotted the ladder but still boosted Ellie up, she would've announced her discovery. When Ellie asked Joel if he wanted to go around the looters last time, he seemed to do just that. This time, he went straight at their location. Rather than go through the doorway, Joel ran up to the broken windows and waited for the enemies to disperse. Then, he hurled a beer bottle into the room on the far left and waited for a guy to come investigate. Joel hopped in, took him hostage, and choked him out. Rather than engage the rest of the enemies, Joel and Ellie took off in a new direction. Here's where I can't show you screengrabs. The pair was into uncharted territory and eventually cut through a bathroom containing the body of a woman who took her life years ago. When Ellie comes upon it, her and Joel have this conversation about this being "the easy way out." Joel tells her it's far from easy. After seeing both of these demos, there's a part in the conference footage that stands out to me. After Joel tosses his Molotov cocktail and burns a man alive, Ellie exclaims "S***, Joel!" In the heat of the original presentation, it didn't seem out of character -- it was her reacting to the situation. But after watching the 17-minute demo -- where that scene never happens -- Ellie's line doesn't sound like she's freaking out about the situation but more about Joel's action. It sounds like she's responding to him acting way more aggressive than he normally does. After the dead body, the pair continue their way through the building. Joel finds a pipe (probably the one the enemy used on him in the other demo) and bandage (a bandage he could've combined with the bottle he threw and some alcohol for a Molotov). Here, Joel's more like you'd imagine a survivor to be. He's quiet, calculated and looking for anything that could keep him alive. Of course, the duo does run into that second round of bad guys from the first demo. They brawl and shoot, but this time the fight features Joel on the defensive. After taking a shot, Joel uses the bandage he found to wrap his bleeding arm. (It's a live inventory system, so enemies keep coming as Joel dresses his wound.) There's a pipe beatdown and some shooting, and when the final enemy falls, Ellie comes out of hiding and reacts to the bleeding body at your feet. With the bad guys dead, Joel and Ellie move on -- past where dude bro's head got blown apart. They open an elevator shaft, climb onto a suspended car, and then jump to its also suspended sister. Ellie gets up, but before she can help him up, the car gives way and Joel tumbles with it to a watery basement. Holding his side in pain, he clicks on a flashlight, calls up to Ellie and begins swimming into a debris field beyond the doorway." Now I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing is happening
