is it a brand new handheld or just a new SKU? im not quite sure

GC power? I highly doubt it. Was it even confirmed that its using Tegra 2?
Each Hanheld went up one gen in graphics from the previous. So it is more than likely it will end up beig GC power. I remember saying the same thing when I heard DS was going to have N64 Power :P
Its always going to be a successor to a console/handheld when there's a significant increase in graphical power.
Bigger screens/redesigns/more features never count.
So if you look at the details SO far, press release etc, you will notice this is an entire new system, if you say otherwise, you probably cant read.
[QUOTE="Meinhard1"]Brand new handheld. It's supposed to have gamecube quality graphics, a thumbstick, tilt sensitivity, camera, rumble and a 3D.funsohngso... no more touchscreens?
The rumble is in the DS pen according to a patent. So there should still be a touch screen.

i just realized it's fully backward-compatible, so it has to have touch screen (....) i wonder if they will have two touch screensso... no more touchscreens?[QUOTE="funsohng"][QUOTE="Meinhard1"]Brand new handheld. It's still bears the DS name, and the touchscreen has worked really well for them. I'd be utterly shocked if it didn't.

just kidding...
perhaps it has a small internal battery, that charges when you charge the handheld?
Wouldn't that mean the pen is wired to the device, what if it breaks?tomarlyn
This is the patent in question.. My interpretation was that the rumble comes from the device, not the pen.

Touch screens will still be there. It is backwards compatible with DS games so touch screens are a given.

Thanks. I remember reading the ''revolution'' patents, mind meltingly confusing. You know what, I think I gave you the wrong link. This patent doesn't seem to mention feedback at all. Unfortunately it is the one everyone is linking to (do they read it?)... ugh, I will try to do some more digging.

Well it was filed on the 18th of this month (before the announcement) and describes a handheld.
Also:
''A storage medium storing a three-dimensional image processing program according to claim 1, whereinsaid input device is a pointing device, andsaid object moving means moves said object to the position coordinate designated with said pointing device on the projection plane of said imaged image.''

Yeah, but I'm now positive that this this is the one I had previously seen.

i think that may apply to a specific game for the platform. sounds very interesting regardless.[QUOTE="tomarlyn"]Well it was filed on the 18th of this month (before the announcement) and describes a handheld.

A bit odd, I can't determine if the ''vibrating stick'' means a stylus or analogue stick. Doesn't seem to mention 3D either. It's like the equivalent of the GBC-GBA jump imo. There's more power and the obvious jump in graphics that are like going from an N64 to a GC (just like the GBA was like going from a NES to a SNES), a couple of control changes (just like the GBA added two more face buttons and shoulder buttons), it's backwards compatible with DS/DSi (just like the GBA played GB/GBC games), and there's the whole 3D display thing (well that's quite a big and very cool change there), but it still has two screens just like the current DS/DSi (as far as we know) and it's still part of the DS line based on the current code name (3DS).is it a brand new handheld or just a new SKU? im not quite sure

i heard the gap between the screens will be decreased. can anyone confirm that?

They should have afold-abledisplay. I was never too fond of those gaps, makes Sonic Rush frustrating to play.

They will probably use OLED in the screen too now that I think about it :o[QUOTE="Messiahbolical-"][QUOTE="tomarlyn"]Brand new with Gamecube power.Willy105Isn't that what the Wii was? But that's a console, not a handheld. Also, the Wii is not really Gamecube power, is a couple times stronger, but tell the devs that. You know I see posts like this all the time with sheep defending the Wii's hardware. Why even bother? You could say the Wii is capable of running Crysis on high at 120 fps for all I care. The developers have already proven the strength of the Wii hardware: It has none. SMG is the best looking game on the entire console and that's pathetic. It's not even that much of an improvement over Super Mario Sunshine and they run at the same resolution. Why defend the Wii's hardware? It sucks. It's common knowledge. You don't have to convince yourself otherwise any longer. The truth will set you free. Just be happy that Nintendo's handheld division is still respectable. If they can match GC power on a handheld, that's pretty impressive IMO. It'll just suck when you go to play your Wii and you realize that a handheld has pretty much the same exact graphic capabilities as it... that's kind of sad.
You already have your answer, but i am going to say that it will be an Epic Fail if it doesn't have a second thumbstick. Learn from sony, Nintendo: People want a second thumbstick so they can play FPS games. It is nearly impossible to play them and feel good if all you have is a left thumbstick and the touchscreen...it doesn't feel as good as dual thumbsticks.
have you played metroid prime hunters? that game was probably the best fps on a handheld of all time. , although i agree it depends on teh size, because using touch screen for shooters is better on the bulky ds then the ds lite. You already have your answer, but i am going to say that it will be an Epic Fail if it doesn't have a second thumbstick. Yes, but i found the shooting to be horrible with the touch screen + d-pad. Better than PSP FPS games, but still not as good as Dual analog i feel. It is just so awkward holding the DS in one hand then using your other as the mover and it gets hard to play when it is put on a flat surface.
[QUOTE="hoola"]People want a second thumbstick so they can play FPS games. _Tobli_
Am i the only one that feels that there is an intense FPS over saturation this generation? I would prefer it if the controls did not cater to more bland first person shooters.
ever since goldeneye and halo every companys trying to make that console fps that everybody will buy.......unfortunately we get alot of shovelware of fpses along with it . ..I don't understand the fascination with dual-analog controls in a FPS. Maybe it's because I almost completely switched to PC FPS after the N64 era. To me, Dpad + touchscreen is closer to a mouse and keyboard setup and feels better.
[QUOTE="tomarlyn"]Brand new with Gamecube power.Messiahbolical-Isn't that what the Wii was? Close, which is why the Wii 2 must be around the corner. Even if the 3DS is near- Gamecube qiuality it'll be within the Wii's ballpark. I think E3 will look like this: 3DS showcase Zelda showcase Mention of Wii 3D Wii 3D playable at next years E3 before xmas 2011 release

There's only 2-3 decent FPS's on the DS and PSP.
Gamers want good FPS's on the go, having played DOOM 3 in 3D I can preach that its an awesome experience. The stylus is perfect but you can get cramp if you use it for too long, although handhelds are meant for short gaming bursts and the shooter genre is perfect for that. If PSP2 has dual analogue then fine.
