My holier-than-thou friends (they are brothers) say that it wasn't and (plenty of) its games had horrible textures, what say you? Is there any scientific evidence that would prove GC's superiority? Anyway, I intuitively and instinctively feel that GC was indeed more powerful, but even if it wasn't, the difference wasn't that big to warrant it a panning.

Who needs scientific evidence when you have eyes? It was more powerful than the PS2, no question about it.

It was more powerful than PS2 for sure but something that always perplexed me is how crappy GameCube versions of multiplatform games would turn out to whether it was in content or graphics. It certainly was capable of high polished graphics for that gen but only a few games actually showed GameCubes visual muscle (Star Wars Rebel Strike, Metroid Prime & Resident Evil 4 come to mind).

I don't know about power, but the Playstation 2 was capable of pulling a wide range of different games, or maybe it was more so the developers themselves.

The good games for Gamecube had a Cartoon like look to them, with the exception of the Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil 4.

But I think Playstation 2 comes out the crystal clear winner with games like:

Shadow of the Colossus
God of War II
Okami
Metal Gear Solid 3
Gran Turismo 4

yes GCN was indeed more powerful- but not by a tremendous amount... in terms of power it weant

Xbox>>>GCN>>PS2>DC

EDIT: Full scale from what I've read/observed

PS3 > Xbox 360 >>>>> Wii > Xbox >>> GCN >> PS2 > Dreamcast >>>>> N64 >>> PS1 > Saturn >>>> Sega 32X >> SNES > Sega CD > Genesis >>>>> Nintendo NES>>>>> Atari 2600

Well consider that the FMVs in the PS2 version were literally recordings of in-engine cutscenes generated in the GameCube version.

if u knew anything about computer architecture then yes specs dont mean everything
it depends alot on how effienctly the cpu or gpu can make use of its clock cycles

a good example would be amd 64 vs p4
amd had cpus running at 1.8ghz vs intels 2.5+ but amds cpus basically raped intel cpus in performance tests and real life performance

its been a while since i took comp arch so i cant really remember the specifics on why certain clock speed can be misleading but what im saying is true

lol but anyways the gc was infact more powerful but the ps2 seemed to have better looking games

Yep, it was. It might actually have been more powerful than the XBOX... But tough to say - they certainly had the cutting edge games of the last generation between them though. It's clear that PS2 was the notably third place last gen, whatever console was first..

the xbox was roughly twice the power of the Ps2 and the GC was in between the rwo, what let the Ps2 down was it's crappy 'graphics synthesiser', whereas the other two had dedicate GPU's, the gamecube definitly had a higher clock speed and more RAM, i know that for certain,

Xbox > Gamecube > PS2.

Xbox had the best looking games... Ninja Gaiden, DOA, Conkur, Riddick, Splinter Cell.

Gamecube had Rogue Squadron, Resident Evil 4 etc.

PS2 had a few unique games that showed off some nice graphics but nothing that beat gamecube's best.

Metroid Prime came out early in the cubes life span and IMO looks better than most of those games you listed, and Prime 2 looked even better than Prime. You can't deny the Cube was more powerful though, however many third party devs didn't use it as well as Nintendo I think (minus Capcom, REmake, RE0 and RE4 looked amazing).

xbox ≥ GCN >> PS2

I think the PS2 proved that Graphics didnt really matter when you hadalot ofthe Exclusives. Not sure if that philosophy applys today, but I guess teh Wii might say yes if were going by sales of Console. Today, we care way more about graphcis then back then, because back then we were still on SDTVs. But now, we want to show off our High Def TVs.

YEs, but because of it's the limitations of it's format, because significantly less people played with the Gamecube than the PS2 and because it wasn't as easy to port games to it, graphically impressive game just didn't show up on the console that often. Resident Evil and Metroid was it.

Did you even look at those specs? Because if you did then you would know that clock cycles are NOT the sole factor in what determines which system is more powerful. There is so much more to what determines a systems power than just the CPU and GPU. Also the Gamecube had a great cpu and gpu, this is Nintendo and they know how to make a good system. GC's CPU was not only faster but basically better, not that is the sole factor you seem to be hinting at.

Also I can show you multiple games that looked better on the GC, but you seem to think that is some factor in system power..It isnt. In fact it has nothing to do with it, how the games look are based on what the Devs do with them, not the systems power.

Because its not. The Xbox had the superior CPU. The CPU goes like this. Xbox > Gamecube > PS2.

Well the best GC game looked better than the best PS2 games.

I remember hearing it was more powerful and MUCH easier to programme for.

Specs-wise, it was. I can't be bothered to look it up, but there were a lot of websites and magazines who compared the specs and they all came to the conclusion that the Xbox was the most powerful, followed by the Gamecube and the PS2 respectively. That's theory, though. When you look at the games, there is a clear advantage of Xbox and Gamecube games over PS2,while the technical superiority of the Xbox over the Gamecube was hardly capitalised upon.

But the major advantage of the Gamecube and Xbox were not so much the graphics, but the load times. I remember some earlier multiplats especially having load times up to 30 seconds(!) longer on the PS2. Sometimes the Gamecube versions of gameseven had way shorter load times than their Xbox counterparts, but that seemed to differ with each game.

That all being said, I cannot think of a single multiplat game that was better on the PS2, except maybe some fighting games, for the simple fact that the DualShock had a superior D-Pad.

The GC was more powerful, but it was harder to use all of its power due to the tiny discs. Nintendo, as usual had to be a rebel and not do what everyone else was doing even if it meant gimping their system. :(
