I see what you did there, but obvious allusion to fanboys predicting PS3's doom and being incorrect aside, yes there will obviously be a PS4. It has all but been comfirmed, the only question unanswered is when. After all the doomsday Sony threads, we can count on a PS4 right? I mean, if not what is left for us [core console gamers]?

I doubt Sony has the money to enter the next console race much less be competetive in it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony
In May 2011, Sony expected to lose a total of 260billion yen ($3.2billion) for the year, due to the effects of the Japanese earthquake. The forecast of a $3.2billion loss was quite different than its earlier projection of a profit of 70billion yen ($857million) for the year.[52]
For the last three years, Sony has lost 399.3 billion yen ($5.1 billion) due to fierce competition mainly with Apple and Samsung Electronics Inc. In September 2000 Sony had a net worth of $100 billion, but by December of 2011 it had plunged to $18 billion.
Sony's TV unit alone set to lose $2.2 billion on tumbling demand and surging yen. Sony has sold off TV factories in Spain, Slovakia and Mexico in the past few years and retains plants of its own in Japan, Brazil, China and Malaysia. In December 2011, Sony has agreed to sell all stake in an LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics for about $940 million and then Sony will outsource the LCD panel from other company as Sony outsourced in the past few years for more than a half of its production.[54

Yes, we can. Sony have made some mistakes this gen, and it has cost them. They will have learned this lesson well, PS4 will deliver in a better way than 3 managed to.After all the doomsday Sony threads, we can count on a PS4 right? I mean, if not what is left for us [core console gamers]?

You're glad,aren't you?Im 100% sure Sony is already working on the PS4. Nonstop-Madness
Sony was working on the PS4 in 2006.
Development of next-gen consoles started immediately after the 7th gen consoles were released.
It takes a really long time to conceptualize and plan out everything necessary for a new console launch.
I would really like at least one of the next gen consoles to be extremely cutting edge. Judging by current rumors on wiiu and xbox, it seems sony is the only hope for that. It looks like it may arrive later than the others, as well.
ITT yet again we have phonemug declaring sony is dying and PS4 will never happen despite sony saying otherwise.
As a load of us have said sony needs stern leadership, modernisation and get rid of the sectors causing the problems and SCE isnt one of them, if anything sony should be focusing on keeping it alive as its a very profitable sector of the company.

I don't know. If NextBox rumors end up being true like I think they will, Sony releasing a cutting edge console would not be very wise at all. It would be unnecessarily expensive compared to the other two and would be put in an awkward position with 3rd parties to develop for.

I understand where your coming from but I simply don't agree. People want a real upgrade. The upgrade has to be power this gen, as the current consoles can do pretty much everything. The focus will be visuals, at least on sonys part. I wouldn't be surprised if wiiu and xbox are the Dreamcast of next gen, in that the Sony console will arrive later but be MUCH more powerful.
You must be glad to post some "Sony is doomed" thing since you can't make threads here for now  The main thing I took from his post was that if not for the earthquake, Sony would have made money this year. So this year provided there are no more seriously destructive acts of nature, they should make money. Well that is if the Vita starts doing better than it is. I think Sony will drop the price of the Vita and/or memory cards and that will start moving more units. But until it launches worldwide, we can't really say it is doing bad. We can only say it is doing bad in Japan. People can waste their time speculating what will happen all they wish, but at the end of the day. That's all it is....speculation. I look forward to seeing what moves Sony makes this year to get the Vita off the ground.[QUOTE="phonemug"]

Yeah, of course you can count on a PS4. You'd be surprised how knowledgable the people here on SW are compared to the average community. Not only are they knowledgable, but they overreact. I was at Gamestop the other day, and I was talking to some of the employees who I know, and they were talking about how excited they were for the PSVita. I asked them what they thought about it tanking in Japan. They looked at me with a confused face, and none of them even had the slightest idea that it wasn't doing well in Japan. People just overreact on here, big time. Some of it is trolling, some of it is to get under other fanboy's skin, some of it is delusional people, whatever it may be, all I know is this. There will be a Wii U, there will be an Xbox 720, and there will be a PS4. And guess what? There will be a Wii U 2, Xbox 1080 and a PS5, you heard it here first. These companies aren't going anywhere, they aren't as frail as people make them out to be.

So, what about the 90+ million people who bought a Wii. Or the 150+ million people who bought a PS2 when there was more powerful hardware available. Like I said, a vast majority of people who buy consoles don't care what the graphics look like. People don't sit down and analyze screen shots and complain if a game is sub-HD.
And 3rd parties will develop games for the largest install base. If that's the Nextbox/Wii U, then there will be a good chance that games will not take advantage of the superior PS4 hardware in this scenario.
And even if they did, the difference wouldn't be that great. Would many people go out and buy the more expensive PS4 when you could play many of the same games with close to the same visual fidelity on the Nextbox/Wii U for a much cheaper price?

I agree with you. I think it would be dumb for Sony to release a really powerful console. I think they should make a cost effective console that is similar in power to the Wii U and Xbox 720. They should focus on cost efficiency. The PS3 was proof that people don't want an expensive console, it bombed at $600. The PS3 spent the entire generation playing catch up because of the powerful hardware. If Sony could take anything away from this generation, it is keep it simple and don't make anything expensive or powerful. Their best system ever was the PS2, the weakest of the 6th generation of consoles. If people want power, they play PC, console gaming has never been about graphics or power. PS3 helped blu ray win the format war, so it ended up being a good investment for Sony in the long run, and now that blu ray drives are cheaper, I think they will release a console with a blu ray drive at a very competitive price. If Sony released a PS4 that was vastly more powerful than the WiiU and 720, that would be suicide. They would be alienating themselves from 3rd party studios in doing so, and since 90% of games these days are multi-platform, 90% of the games would even be able to utilize the PS4's power if it was significantly more powerful. The only games that would see a benefit from the power would be the short list of exclusives. Just a bad idea all around to release a powerful PS4. Price it competitively and make it similar in power to the competition.

Exclusives ARE what differentiate one console from another. People that are informed , and are looking to make the most out of their purchase, are going to buy the Wii-U and PS4 for their exclusive needs. So what Sony needs to do a better job at next gen - is better informing more people about what the PS4 has to offer, and what it can do. They need to be more aggressive with their marketing as well. Like for example, The PS3 has had the best exclusives this gen by far- with new IPS, old IPS, and a wide variety of different genres. They have quality and quantity on lock down, and crush the competition in those regards. Hell, the PS3 very arguably has had the greatest exclusive line up of ANY console, of all time, PERIOD... BUT some casual fans just dont know about all of them or haven't had the opportunity to learn about them. So Sony needs to better show the casual fan all those awesome PS exclusives that can only be played on a playstation platform. Just one small example in my opinion. But strictly on a marketing level, i think Sony needs to improve in a lot of ways for next gen. P.s Although to be fair, the Kevn Bulter ads are awesome! But when a new console is launching , then that requires a different kind of marketing and or strategy IMO. Who knows though. p.s.s Also, Where the hell is all this "most powerful system doesn't get multi plats" talk coming from? Even if the PS4 is by far the most powerful console, it will still receive every multi plat game that the others get. Remeber, multi plat developers want to release their games on as many platforms as possible. Now maybe some developers, for what ever dumb reasons, will choose not to take advantage of the PS4's superior hardware, and maybe some will, BUT at the very least, the PS4 will get multi plats at the same level of the other console's level. Also, Where the hell is all this "most powerful system doesn't get multi plats" talk coming from? The point I was trying to make, is why should Sony release a more powerful console than the 720 and Wii U if 90% of the games are multi-platform? Developers would not take advantage of the PS4's superior hardware, they would most likely develop on the 720 or Wii U as lead platform and port it over to the PS4. Making the PS4 more powerful than the competition would make it more expensive, right? What is the point of making a console more powerful and in turn, more expensive if that extra power isn't even utilized in 90% of the games on the market? PS4 will get multi plats at the same level as the competition, so why should they make their system $100 or $200 dollars more expensive? It makes absolutely no business sense, none at all.
I'm not business mastermind, but if Sony wants to be successful next gen, all they have to do is release PS4 at a competitive price, similar in power to the WiiU and 720, and keep all their 1st party studios and exclusive franchises in tact, along with free and improved PSN. If they can manage to do that, it will be a HUGE step in the right direction for that company.

And that's a market Sony wants to get on as well (hence Move). PS2 was a worthy upgrade, but the Gamecube was more powrful than the PS2. If, by your logic, console buyers want to get the best of the best, why did Gamecube fail? It's not about graphics.
Sony is not going to risk another colossal, expensive failure when they're already bleeding money. Why would any company push out an incredibly powerful system, sell it at a loss to be price competitive, and try to compete when the developers and the rest of the competition are doing perfectly fine with less-powerful hardware.

Unless your muffin man i wasnt quoting you. But you do make a good point! And price is very key! We will see what happens, and what route Sony looks to take. Hopefully they go with what's right, and with what makes the most sense to us and them. Now, I know you cant really compare the PC market to the console market, But look at PC gamers, They spend big money to upgrade their computers, even though most computer games hardly ever take advantage of all the power that's available from a top of the line PC. I guess, to them, having the option is nice even though their powerful rigs hardly ever get taken advantage of. However, With consoles -console exclusives are always what's going to take full advantage of that consoles power. And in the case of the PS3 - it's exclusives are what proved its prowess, and are what definitively proved that the PS3 was the most powerful system this gen. Its the exclusives that truly showed off what the PS3 was capable of. Muli plats never did that. The PS4's power will be realised by its exclusives, and having the option for possible better multi plats is nice, even though ...maybe ...not all of the developers will take advantage of it....but that's what Sony's big and prolific first party studios are for(with the amazingly talented, determined, and industry best devloper Naughty Dog leading the charge!) Of course, I'm only speaking from my opinions as a core gamer, You are right in what you say, and especially considering how terrible the economy is now, But who knows, Technology has increased too, and blue ray/cell which raised the cost the PS3, aren't expensive any more. An upgraded cell, with lots more memory, and an up to par GPU with improved blue ray could make the PS4 a beast of a console but at an affordable price. After all the doomsday Sony threads, we can count on a PS4 right? I mean, if not what is left for us [core console gamers]?

I cant really disagree with anything you've said here. But you or I don't know what consoles are going to lead the market. No body expected the Wii to be absolutely dominating both the 360 and PS3, while the 360 and the PS3 violently battle it out for second place - in a dog fight of a struggle. p.s Off topic. IMO... What Sony can do, is do their best to bring out the best product that they can, and to be as best prepared as possible. They need to bring their A game. Work hard and success will come.I think Sony just needs to stop making bone headed decisions and advertise their 1st party studios and games more aggressively. Sony is my favorite gaming company in the business right now, but I'll be the first to admit that the company is run by a bunch of morons. It just seems like they get walked all over, and they have everything they need to succeed, but just can't pull the trigger. Sony has all of these great things, great console specific hardware features, great exclusive games, but they do such a bad job of making it well known across the gaming community that it seems like they're trying to keep it a secret. It's almost like cows take it upon themselves to make up for the absolutely atrocious marketing that Sony has.
Sony should by pass this coming gen, continue supporting the PS3 till 2017 with new IPs and new game prices at 29.99 as well as a console price of 100 bucks.

The difference from what you're saying though is they also made a new system and I'm happy about both those decisions.

The forecast of a $3.2billion loss was quite different than its earlier projection of a profit of 70billion yen ($857million) for the year.[52]For the last three years, Sony has lost 399.3 billion yen ($5.1 billion) due to fierce competition mainly with Apple and Samsung ElectronicIn September 2000 Sony had a net worth of $100 billion, but by December of 2011 it had plunged to $18 billion.Sony's TV unit alone set to lose $2.2 billion on tumbling demand and surging yen. Sony has sold off TV factories in Spain, Slovakia and Mexico in the past few years and retains plants of its own in Japan, Brazil, China and Malaysia. In December 2011, Sony has agreed to sell all stake in an LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics for about $940 million and then Sony will outsource the LCD panel from other company as Sony outsourced in the past few years for more than a half of its production.DrakesHaloGearsAnd how do your wikipedia links.....LOL wikipedia......prove or reinforce your "Sony is in teh doomz" rhetoric, that there won't be a PS4 again? Show us the connection OH Mr Great Sony doom prophet - for you...some random nobody on the internet ....clearly know the inner most workings of all things Sony, and in how they operate better then Sony themselves, who have all but confirmed the PS4. Now what your amature links do in fact prove is that Sony- like MANY - are struggling in this tough economy. And in all actuality ...not the delusional fantasy land that you live in where Kinect/Halo/Gears are the greatest thing since sliced bread, and exclusives don't matter, In all actuality, if not for the eqarth quake, Sony would have turned a big profit this year. Now maybe, because of how things are going now, the PS4 will release later rather then.sooner, But it WILL eventually come out, no matter what you say or how muvh you cry about it...IT WILL COME OUT.
Stop feeding the troll.
We will never see a PS4

I think Sony just needs to stop making bone headed decisions and advertise their 1st party studios and games more aggressively.

Spot on, less than a month till Vita launch and not a single ad or major billboard push....

They don't have the money to market like they used to.Down to 18 billion in 2012 from 100 billion in 2000. Things have changed.

Wii hit an untapped market. PS2 was a worthy upgrade from the PSX.
DrakesHaloGears
And that's a market Sony wants to get on as well (hence Move). PS2 was a worthy upgrade, but the Gamecube was more powrful than the PS2. If, by your logic, console buyers want to get the best of the best, why did Gamecube fail? It's not about graphics.
Sony is not going to risk another colossal, expensive failure when they're already bleeding money. Why would any company push out an incredibly powerful system, sell it at a loss to be price competitive, and try to compete when the developers and the rest of the competition are doing perfectly fine with less-powerful hardware.
Also, Where the hell is all this "most powerful system doesn't get multi plats" talk coming from? Even if the PS4 is by far the most powerful console, it will still receive every multi plat game that the others get. Remeber, multi plat developers want to release their games on as many platforms as possible. Now maybe some developers, for what ever dumb reasons, will choose not to take advantage of the PS4's superior hardware, and maybe some will, BUT at the very least, the PS4 will get multi plats at the same level of the other console's level.
DrakesHaloGears
I didn't say they wouldn't get multiplats. I said the multiplats most likely wouldn't look significantly better since the Nextbox/Wii U would be a larger market, and thus, developers would make one of those the lead platform.
But like you said, the exclusives are generally what sells a system; not power.
Work hard and success will come.True, we don't know specifically which console will be leading, but we do know that that NextBox/Wii U combined will be a larger market than the PS4 just because its two consoles, and two userbases, compared to one. It will be even more prominent if the PS4 comes out last.
I absolutely agree with you. They need to market more aggressively. But let's not over exaggerate here lol. Morons is a bit too much, and a bit too harsh, wouldn't you say? "Morons" don't make great things like the playstation! Yeah, we know, Sony made some mistakes at the beginning of this gen, and the chips have not fallen in their favor as well, but oh well it happens. Its been a learning experience that Sony can only learn from, from here on out Look at the PS3 now vs how it was back then , so they've obviously learned some things from past mistakes, and have improved for the betout already. But of course more improvements are welcomed and needed. But Sony has learned from their past mistakes. They will only continue to learn more and improve more with each experienceI think Sony just needs to stop making bone headed decisions and advertise their 1st party studios and games more aggressively. I'm suprised that you made such a dumb post like this. Annnnd..... The PS4/Wii-U combined will be a much larger market then the 720.
