So we're going to act like there isn't a cartridge-based console arriving in 2016?

I read it on Gamespot a few hours ago, and thought someone would post a thread about it, but no one did.. so here we are, lol.. What do you all think about this?

Are you talking about the NX?? Because I think that's early 2017. I don't care what patcher says.

Why should anyone even care?

Seriously, 5 more consoles could release next year, I dont think anyone would care.

@RTUUMM: there's actually one new console maker that's entering the console business. I wish I saved the link. He seems pretty confident that the console will do well also.

@skullcavity: There was a thread. You said no one posted one, but there was one.

It was only three days ago: http://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/the-king-is-back-meet-the-coleco-chameleon-32845611/?messageId=353403989#js-message-3

That makes this a duplicate thread.

Remember, if GS makes an article, the news is already old.

Thought this was about next gen consoles going back to cartridges with the speed of an SSD rather than sticking to blu-ray.

I really like this idea. What's the capacity of a blu-ray disk? Like, 50 gigabytes?

With the sorts of speeds we can get from USB sticks and memory cards these days I really like the idea of a modern cartridge.

You can also have space on the drive to put your save games on, or even mods installed directly into the game. The firmware updates could be on the game too. So if you get new hardware, like let's say your system dies and you need to get a new one, you can plug in the cartridge and without the need to download all your updates they'll just be there along with whatever mods you've installed and all your save games are there too!

Most of these functions can be carried out by other parts of the hardware, but this will give developers a lot of freedom for how they want to design their games.

Of course these days I primarily use digital distribution, which is both great and wrought with shortcomings.

It will be good for those that want to play those type of 8 bit games, but I'm not one of them.

50GB for dual layer, maybe they can support the new 66GB discs, but it sounds iffy if they will ever support 100GB as that could be a hardware thingy.

In a way I would love to see them use fast SD cards or something like that for games, from the user perspective it would be cool But it's also a bit risky for Nintendo. Prices have fallen considerably for flash memory, but it's still not even close to on par with the low cost of optical discs. Any additional cost might change publishers plans for publishing physical games, and it seems like Nintendo can't really afford to do anything that might scare off even more 3rd party.

Sure. If you want me to ignore it and pretend it's not happening, I'll do it. I'm not sure why though.

if they did go to cartridge or flash memory type media for selling games, im guessing prices will be way higher for these games. Even blank consumer 25gb single layer blurays are less then $1.50 last time i bought one, and that was a few years ago, probably even less now. And the cost of a 16gb memory card is maybe around 8 dollars or less. I'm guessing they can make them much cheaper than that but still will cost more than a simple bluray disc.

On the up side though, its a very good anti piracy measure since copying cartridges aren't as easy as blurays. Also i guess the speed may be better, even on a cheap usb flash memory you can read over 20-30mb/sec, but on a bluray, the fastest read speeds i've ever seen are 11mb/sec and they go up and down a lot. And if they made them more like the tech in mini ssd's, the read speeds would be crazy like in the hundreds of mb/s
