What have we learned? Some good, some bad.
Good:
Creativity has never been more prevalent, you just need to look for it.
Weaker hardware does not equal a bad system.
Motion controls can make a game truly unqiue when used properly.
Video games can be one of the best ways to tell a story.
Just because a game gets a yearly release doesn't mean it's the same every year. (Assassin's creed.) There can still be many innovations.
Taking beloved franchises to new and unexplored areas can be a big payoff.
Resurrecting previously "dead" Ip's can also pay off.
Not all licensed games have to suck. (Batman.)
The ways to make a unique RPG are many and awesome.
Not all FPS's are the same.
Indie games can be great.
Now for the bad:
Make a game with guns, lots of swearing and violence, plus annual releases, and you have one of the biggest money making formulas in history.
And, unfortunatley, little will change between installments, and will spawn many clones that do little to distinguish themselves.
Sometimes new ideas =/= good ideas.
Letting twelve year olds play Mrated games online is a really, really, really, really bad idea.
Beleive it or not, there is such a thing as genre fatigue.
People will use inferior hardware to instantly write off a system.
