I've played almost every game that would fall in the horror genre this gen such as Alan Wake, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, RE 4 & 5, Dead Space 1 & 2. And while without question my favorite of those is Silent Hill Shattered Memories and RE 4, I think the game that actually terrified me the most is Condemned. I've yet to play Amnesia which a friend keeps pestering me to do, but as for now Condemned was terrifying.

Bioshock. Rarely has a game that let me be Zeus, The Pain, and Roy Mustang left me feeling so...unnerved.:?

And how the hell is Dead Space even remotely scary!?:o

Vyse_Legends

To be fair Bioshock isn't scary either.

Well we all find certain things a bit more "spooky" than others.:P

I mean I was up til like 1 am with the lights out when I first got Dead Space in an attempt to make it scary.:? Bioshock...my clock hit 10 pm and that **** meant save and start again tomorrow.

BioShock, I don't even think was created to be "scary." I can see it be a disturbing or unnerving game. But Dead Space's aim was to try and scare you.

Demon's Souls, the creepy atmosphere, enemy NPC's and Black phantoms really make me feel tense when playing.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but the only game that scared me was Dead Space 2 on hardcore. I beat the game 4 times prior, and when playing through on hardcore I kept wandering through hallways thinking "Son of a... when does this fight happen?" and I found myself going through much more cautiously and it made it way more unnerving.

Amnesia had brilliant atmosphere and really, really creepy design but it was so easy I never felt threatened by anything. Great game, but the effect wore off shortly and I felt like I was on cruise control playing through it.

Bloodshot was easily scarier than Criminal Origins, the rabies bear was probably my favorite part of the game, and Dead Space was scarier than Dead Space 2. I'd say Dead Space myself, haven't played Amnesia though but it's not really of this gen as PC is generationless. Right now it's probably a tie between Dead Space and Siren Blood Curse, many people probably don't even know of Siren Blood Curse. Anyhow, does little good declaring scary games, most people these days don't know how to play a scary game, either talking with their friends on XBL instead of playing the game in isolation, playing music in the background, or having sound turned down, I always play in isolation with lights of and surround sound cranked up or headphones on, and no distractions, that kind of isolation really makes the experience that more enjoyable.

STALKER games can be pretty scary if you approach it like a horror game. If you don't have any night vision, it's insanely scary at night. It's actually dark when it's cloudy, you can barely see anything.

cain006

Get the Atmosfear mod for Stalker Clear Sky. It's pretty damn scary at night.

However Amnesia is definitely top this gen easily.

Amnesia easily, Dead Space 1/2 had some good moments and great atmosphere but Amnesia is actually scary. SH HC isn't any where near SH2/3, condemned was certainly jumpy but it was a bit on the predictable side (I liked the investigating though :P).

When the Team Ico collection comes out, play Boss 6 (I think?) on SoTC. Scared the pants off me first time. I hate where and what it is.

I played both amnesia a couple of months ago, and picked up condemned: criminal origins day one on PC, and I'd definitely have to go with amnesia. The other ones in the poll hardly compare to either imo.

I wasn't too scared by Amnesia actually, everything just felt so forced. It's a great game and pretty scary, but I thought that penumbra was better.

I have yet to play any game in the poll, but I would say Metro 2033; especially the levels that take place above ground. A combination of a fogged up gas mask, no ammo, and the enemies that come out of no where equal a pretty frightening experience.

Amnesia > FEAR > Condemned (though Condemned isn't really creepy except for the farmhouse level, just atmospheric)

When does Dead Space get scary? I'm on chapter 5 I believe and haven't even been startled. I haven't played much Amnesia, it's gotten burried in the backlog, but I'm sure that's the scariest game from what I've heard.

Grawse

I'm a huge HUGE horror game fan and I have probably played 95% all the great horror titles. Dead Space scared the living s**t out of me. In order to get the full experience of a horror title you must follow these 3 golden rules. number one, play in the dark preferably at night. Number two, Use surround sound headphones and make sure the volume is up high so you can hear the background noise clearly (one great thing about Dead Space is the background noise i.e metal bars clanking on the floor, the sound of necromorphs crawling through the vents and that creepy little little star tune that comes and goes). Rule Number three, PLAY ALONE. If you follow those three rules and then tell me dead space doesn't scare you, you're a goddamn liar!

For me this gen would have to go to amnesia. Game is hella scary, something about not being able to fight and only hide made me litteraly scared to turn corners in that game.

I followed 3 of those rules, except my headphones were stereo. Didn't scare me ever. And I'm not just being a tough guy - I admit that I'm too much of a chicken to watch most horror movies, even with someone else.

The sound design adds a lot to the game, though, that much is true.

Amnesia is brilliant.

It would sell well on xbox live or PSN.

DillonShwing

I'm not much of a PC gamer so I've never played Amnesia. Has there been any word on it coming to Xbox 360 or Ps3?

I remember after the success of Amnesia on the PC they did make plans for a 360 port, but it's been almost a year since the game came out, and I haven't heard any updates on that since.

I suggest getting your sea legs, and giving PC another shot :P Games like Amnesia don't require monster PCs, and many games allow controller support, so there's always that option (though I don't think Amnesia has controller support :P )

I don't think any other game in existence comes close to Amnesia. That's the scariest game I've ever played. It's so scary that I can't play it for very long in one sitting. No more than two hours at a time.

inb4 overrated Amnesia.

I honestly can come up with one.*let me think*

lbjkurono23
it got a lot of praise from those who like horror games, because truthfully this gen has been really bad for horror games and amnesia was a pretty darn good horror game imo, not for everyone though, i loved it but i can see why one would say its not as good as some give it credit for :)

Slicing up aliens with a plasma cutter to me wasn't very scary.

T'was a bore fest in the scare department. I did still enjoy chopping up the aliens though for the 8 or so hours it took to beat.

Amnesia. Condemned is pretty scary at times but Amnesia is most certainly scarier. Other than those two I haven't really played any game I found scary this gen. Dead Space was a fun shooter though.

Meh, I have watched quite a bit of footage of Amnesia and I can't help but feel the game is vastly overrated and people are just latching onto it with how sad the horror genre has been this gen.

I miss Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame 2. Those games were amazing and scared the **** out of me back in the day...

Yes I know playing the game increases the immersion, but I couldn't help feeling that the atmosphere wasn't all that special, and they are borderline cheating by making it so you CAN'T FIGHT BACK! That is such a cop out way to add fear factor to a game when you literally can't do **** but run and hide. Anything that can hurt you becomes terrifying when you can't fight back...

I would most certainly be willing to play the game at some point, but my expectations are pretty damn low.

Like I said, I think it is only getting major hype as it has been one of the only true horror games to come out this gen....

Yeah, that's kind of the whole point of Amnesia.

Nothing about it is a "cop out" or "cheating", it's just the way the game is designed and it's very effective.
