So has nobody got a valid reason for sales in general not mattering? No? Oh well, Wii - 1 ; 360 - 1 ; PS3 - 0. Sorry cows.groudyogre
Sales matter. Some people aren't very sharp and may not relise it, but they matter. Obviosly, just because a product sells well doesn't mean the product is good. Look no further than 50 cent's game for one of the best examples. But to ignore the paramount importance of sales in the console wars is well, stupid.
a) More console SALES = More games.
"I'm about games, not sales." Ahh yes, heard that a million times. Who isn't? Still, it shouldn't be hard to understand that more console sales/install base translates into more games. (I say "shouldn't" because some people are immune to reason here on SW.) A console with a large install base recieves more third party support. (Think PS2.) It will also get games that may have otherwise not gotten. (Think DMC4, VF4, RE5 and other games jumping ship to 360.) It may also loose games that it would otherwise have. (Xbox, GC, and Soul Calibur 3) If you are all about games, then you should hope your console is all about sales.
b ) Sales generally determine console winners.
While sales aren't a great measure for game quality, (Hello Who wants to be a Millionare PC!) they are usually the measure by which console succes is determined. Individual fans can and will argue that their console of choice "won" for any number of reasons, but most people rely on cold hard sales. Last gen? PS2 dominated. The one Before? Ps1 took the crown. Dreamcast? Good games, but it failed. Sales, sales, sales. Once you leave fanboy wonderland, sales play a paramount role.
So lets apply that to the Wii without putting our brains in a suitcase....
a) Wii is winning. Fair enough. Some may hate to admit it, but of the new consoles, it is hard to deny. The longer Wii can sustain it's monsterous sales pace, the better positioned it will be for the long haul. It has already benifited from strong sales. Many third party developers are scrambling to develop for Wii. That means more games.
Now lets put our brains back in. And consider some important factors:
- The Wii's huge price advantage will be mostly eliminated in the future.
360 and PS3 fans don't seem very bothered by Wii outselling their consoles. Why? Well, based on its price it should be outselling their consoles. Understand, I'm not trying to downplay the huge sales of the Wii. But rather point out that the real competiton between the three consoles will be when the 360 and PS3 hit mass market prices. (Maybe $200 vs. the Wii at $100.) Once the prices come down, the competition will heat up. The question with the Wii has always been how it will hold up in the long run.
- Who are buying Wiis?
This is important. I want nintendo to cater to me, the gamer. I want more Smash Bros, Zelda, Metroid. I want real internet with voice chat for my SSBB, not this kid safe d-pad junk! Wii Fit... no thanks. How about getting us a port of RE5? If you are a sheep and are not concerned, then its wake up time!
