So Wii-U's Super Mario 3D World doesn't have any 3D support

I agree with the OP.  If they don't support stereoscopic 3d, it shouldn't be in the title.

Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy.  They've done 3d graphics before, and it was never neccesary to put 3d in the title.

At this stage it shouldn't be much of a big deal to provide the option for 3d.  The technology is there.  You could provide the option to swap 3d for a resolution or framerate upgrade.  Say 3d @ 720p vs 2d @ 1080p.

I agree with you.  I cannot believe Charizard doesn't.  Nintendo has incredibly stupid naming schemes lately.  New super mario bros is one of the worst.  For WiiU is also an awful one.  Super SMASH BROTTTTHEEERS!!! for wiiu.....how awesome.

Why would a game on a console that does not officially support 3D need 3D in the first place?

If we eliminated 3d out this title, we get

Despite the underwhelming reveal, I agree.  I think the game will surprise a lot of people.  Its not as if the guys at EAD just forgot how to design excellent platformers after cranking out two of the all time greats.

The game obviously isn't going to have 3D, not that I care. The naming for the game was pretty dumb though, since there is no 3D gimmick on the Wii U. Clearly the 3D name was just slapped on for some lame attempt to try and get those that played 3D Land excited, which, again, is silly since Mario alone will be enough to sell the game (or sell as much as it possibly can on the Wii U anyways with its install base).

silly naming aside I am actually pretty excited for the game.
