LOL, indeed. Works for me.

are you from Czech republic ? :D just assuming by your nickname[QUOTE="AmnesiaHaze"]
[QUOTE="BlbecekBobecek"]
Its already happening in case you didnt notice. It was started slowly by Demons Souls as an "Call of Duty antigame" that refused the basic principles of modern FPSs (like cinematic feel, linearity, very little effort required from the player) and although it was exclusive to only one platform and had pretty much no marketing at all, gamers found it for themselves and it became an unexpected hit.
And look at this year - Witcher 2, Dark Souls, Skyrim... and many others just around a corner.
BlbecekBobecek
No, my nicknem originated when my cat jumped on my keyboard, does it mean anything in Czech?
i see , then your cat probably is from there, he/she will tell you the meaning :DSeriously, while more role playing games are always nice, I don't want to see a series like The Elder Scrolls be turned into some yearly cash cow. These games deserve time and attention and that is what makes it so special every time one releases. Besides, The Elder Scrolls was popular before Skyrim and it is not like there is a lack of role playing games anyway.
[QUOTE="Spartan070"]Nah, the "fever" of COD is competitiveness, something only harnessed in the gaming world with FPS, sports and fighting games.Da_lil_PimPSc2 says hi. ...true, but a game like SC2 will never make the money, particularly in the US, that any of those other games will. Devs are not about to rush to start pumping out RTS games hoping to make money lol.
Unless something new and original is relesed, I don't think JRPGs will EVER be a fad again. It's main problem is being WAY too cliche as far as story, characters, character designs, and the overly used anime art that floods the genre.
Demon's/Dark Souls is a step in the right direction, though.
I agree. I think a lot of games could use a dose of exploration/open world stuff. IMO, it adds replayability to a game that otherwise wouldn't have it.Honestly I wouldn't mind an RPG fad. Especially if that meant more immersive open-worlds like Skyrim.
I remember the JRPG fad of last gen. It brought us some incredible games. I see no reason why a WRPG fad couldn't do the same.

Fads are bad things, they don't promote creative endeavors, just commercial ones. 2. Your generalizations of Japanese games is hilarious. Western games are even worse for overused styles and character/world designs. Almost every western game released this gen has either a bald space marine, or grizzled Nolan North lookalike at the helm.
The popularity of the action/FPS/Shooter genre isn't a fad, it's the result of gaming becoming more populated. RPGs will never become more popular than what the masses want. They wont just simply change their tastes.
Platformers and RPGs where more popular back then because quite simply other genres hadn't evolved yet thus the interest for new gamers to appear wasn't there.
I think if anything, Dark Souls proved you don't even need a good story to be a tremendous game. Give me interesting characters, tight combat, and a great level up system, and I'm happy.Unless something new and original is relesed, I don't think JRPGs will EVER be a fad again. i wouldn't mind that, at least you normally get an engaging SP experience that has depth AND length. Heil68
Many modern RPGs seem to lack this. I have seen action games with more depth than a lot of these games posing as RPGs.
But usually at the expense of having the game padded out. Dragon Age Origins took this to the extreme, never before have I seen such a high concentration of filler content in a single game.

Yup, and people are raging over the the cliche designs of Western games as well. The difference is that LAST gen, Japanese games controled most of the market, and people got tired of it, which is why Western developers had more of an impact this gen. With that said, just because people are tired of cliche Western designs doesn't mean they are ready to go back to cliche Japanese design with open arms.
Lke I said, Demon's/Dark Souls is a step in the right direction, merging the two designs into a single game.
You wont enjoy games if they don't appeal to your acquired tastes. An it's clear not all developers are out to cater to everyone. They'll mostly catar to the masses, where the money is at. The masses wont simply just change what game genre they like in a blink of an eye. Not that simple.Maybe.I'm okay with whatever developers do as long as I enjoy the games.

Ever since Call of Duty 4's popularity skyrocket, there has been disgustingly gratuitous ammounts of first person shooters that attempt to go for what Call of Duty achieved. Now that Skyrim has essentially raised the series' popularity to new levels, does anyone sense an RPG "fad" among developers next, much like the heaps upon masses of "Call of Duty clones"?
Justinge3
No, because that 'skyrocket' popularity never began with Cod for first person shooters, but with Doom, and ever since that game the genre has ben in a steady rise. It will never end, it's not a fad. And i don't see how Skyrim raised anything, Oblivion (or maybe Morrowind) was the one that brought the series to new heights of popularity. And i am certain barely anyone will copy its st.yle.
A part of me thinks that game tend to become more like Mass Effect 2, with fast paced and awesome combat but with a lot of depth in its story and characters, making the game being what a RPG should be about, playing a role. Or incorporating more tradicional RPG elements to give game depth, like RAGE. In it there was weapons mods, ammo types, crafting, etc... it gives a much more enjoyable experience than just start shooting people (and actuallys make me surprise how poorly RAGE was recieved).
.
At the same time this is nothing new. System Shock 2 made very similar things a long time ago, and it didn't start any major trend.
.
I suppose it's hard to make games with depth when you can make than shallow and sell a lot, what needs to change it's not the developers, but the public... and I don't see this happening anytime this century.

You know, I love how people say there are a massive amount of first person shooters being made, but I would really like to know a solid number of shooters that have been made this gen. Don't know if we should count all the CoD games though, since SW have already determined they are the same game every year :P I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the number of them are grossly exaggerated. Yeah, there are a decent amount of shooters, but I honestly think there were FAR more JRPGs last gen than shooters this gen.

People do exaggerate the numbers. There were always a significant amount of first person shooters, each year, the only time i would say that it would have ben a overflow of this genre was in the '93 - '96 period, wen 'Doom clones' exploded and solidified this genre in the first place. Ever since '96, the genre evolved beyond Doom and became the genre we know of today.
Dissing this genre in this generation because of CoD is a fad that'll hopefully go away, though i believe CoD will never die out. This genre has ben going strong for over 15 years, and it'll remain that way, at least for the rest of our lives.
I think JRPGs were far more popular in the 4th and 5th generation. The 6th generation doesn't hold a candle. But, that overflow wasn't bad, you know.. a lot of those games are actually good. WRPGs were always popular aswell. But this RPG talk is a different subject that i could write a page on. :P

I was hoping for RTS and FPS-RTS games becoming popular. Like Battlezone 3, Dungeon Keeper 3, Populous the not so beginning etc.
The Wii U may be an excellent device for RTS titles (still depending on its RAM I guess).

More RPG's?
Hell NO! If every game that gets released becomes an RPG, I'm quitting gaming.
speedfreak48t5p
Nice knowing ya. Don't let the door hit you on the way out :P:P
Yea I actually think so. Alot of people I know are playing Skyrim and enjoying it. Like these are the people who only really buy Halo COD and Madden. I hope RPG's get more popular its my favorite genre.
Well with an RPG you can use the same formula but still keep it fresh, relativley speaking. I wouldn't mind it. But there are plenty of RPG's on the market worth playing today.
I hope so.
RPGs>shooters.

This...alot.
But for RPG's to take over their has to be a flow of them...and most RPG's arent exactly made yearly :/

Already got my RPG fix with Demon's Souls/Dark Souls. Add Skyrim and Fallout 3 and New Vegas and I'm good.
RPG is my favorite genre, so I sure hope so.AmazonTreeBoaMe too, but devs don't like making them..they take too much time, thought and they can't market them to the "Bro" gamer..like they can with cod. Just look how well that turned out for Dragon Age 2...lol

Oh yes, I want actual RPGs and not the shallow crap we got this gen. Especially Turn Based RPGs preferably employing actual death mechanics (Permadeath/Expensive resurrection spells/ect). And the less they try to emulate WoW or Gears of War, the better.
WRPGs completely went down the toilet this gen. It is the only gen where I prefered JRPG offerings over WRPG offerings.
Maroxad
So for a game to be considered a "real" RPG? it has to b turn based? I keep seeing this sentiment crop up over and over again, "todays games aren't real RPGs because they use button actions and not turn based menus, etc...".
Are you really suggesting that RPGs must adhere to a 25 year old formula?Seems like people in your school of thought insist that the RPG genre can never evolve :?
They dont have to be turn based, just stat based. Even action can work, Mount&Blade came close to what I want. So too was my vision of how I believed Mass Effect was going to be (of course, that game disappointed me in that regard, like it disappointed me with everything else). Deus Ex could be describes as an ARPG, yet it is stat based enough for me to consider it an RPG.
Speaking of turn based, there are plenty of ways to evolve turn based combat. The best implementation we have seen in a video game is Temple of Elemental Evil developed in 2003.
Have to agree with you...Mass Effect 2 (not 1) was a major let down. Taking out stats, inventory and dumbing down the skill tree and making it strictly shooter really made me hate the game. I sold it before ever finishing it.youll be saying that till it happens. then you will be zomg teh rpgs are overrated!Honestly I wouldn't mind an RPG fad. Especially if that meant more immersive open-worlds like Skyrim.

After the success of Skyrim, I think we'll start using more first games with RPG elements in them. I mean, almost everyone I know seems to play Skyrim, even people who before it made fun of me for being a "RPG nerd" before Skyrim. It seems to have woken up the RPG side of everyone.

What has Skyrim to do with RPGs?
Lol.
As much as I would like the RPG genre to steal the spotlight from the shooter genre, I doubt it will happen. Too many people don't have the attention span for RPGs. They need guns, fast paced action, short games and awesome graphics!

You're just angry because it's true. :POnly thing i want to change is the single player length on shooters. I'll just look to Final Fantasy for my rpg fix. So the answer is No as we got enough of Skyrim games. They are nothing new anyway its just Skyrim broke out. Everyone is using the i took an arrow to the knee phrase. Its now fallen into the causal crowd like call of duty, halo, ect ect ect. Ain't a bad thing but i see this term bro gamer n guess what skyrim is now a bro gamer game lol.
50 / 50 on this. I'd like more RPG's which are like Monster Hunter 3and less like Final Fantasy 13. I think im close to finishing the game (im on Proud Clad) and i feel like im having a shotgun held to my head everytime i play it now, It just seems like i have played it to death and their isnt much more i can get out of the game now. The battles have become tiredsome. Monster Hunter is what i wanna see. Great Battles, Great cusomization, Great Gameplay and quite a strategic game.
I havent played Demon Souls yet, wouldnt mind getting Xenoblade and cannot wait for Monster Hunter 4 and hoping Dragons Dogma shapes up to be a good game. Oh and i hope FF13 - 2 resolves the many issues with 13.

Lol Final Fantasy stopped being RPG's in 2006.
I'm surprised you'd say that, that would mean less Mass Effect.More RPGs? Oh YES please :D
