The secondary market is a huge issue in the United States. Our primary retailer makes the majority of its money off of secondary sales, and so you're starting to see games taking proactive steps toward that by… if you buy the retail version you get the unlock code. I've talked to some developers who are saying 'If you want to fight the final boss you go online and pay USD 20, but if you bought the retail version you got it for free'. We don't make any money when someone rents it, and we don't make any money when someone buys it used - way more than twice as many people played Gears than bought it. - Epic Games' President Mike Capps

If this happens I might pick up a new hobby...like tennis or something.

Gaming is getting way too expensive and they look like they just want to squeeze more money out of us.

Well, I buy the games that I really want from retail whereas I buy used games I missed out on. But I still don't agree with this. Costs are getting higher to make games and I wouldn't have said this a year ago, but I think devs should slow down. As much as I love having games that have amazing presentations it will be more likely that this DLC crap to unlock the ending of a game will happen, unless we get another "depression" in video games, which I doubt. I for one hate micro-transactions so if this will be the case for next gen, count me out. I know there will probably be a lot of people for this, but I don't care.

There's already a Sony game that's doing this and it's called Siren.  You just can't pay for one episode, you have to pay for all the episodes and the episode with the ending just to see the ending.  I hope it doesn't become a trend.

Doesn't Siren for the PS3 already do that? YOu have to pay seperately to get the ending episode I believe. If that happens, I will go back to playing hardcore ping pong :D

Tennis is an awesome sport, I highly recommend it.

And yeah this is just getting ridiculous. The game industry just keeps spiraling downwards these days.

Great idea.

It's about time developers take a stand against resellers.

We saw it earlier this week with Nintendo and Wii Speak, and now we're seeing it from a top-tier developer.

Hopefully more people in the industry take a stand as well.

Sounds like a perfect idea. You buy the game, you get the ending for free. You pirate the game, you have to pay extra for the ending. Only people complaining would be the pirates.

Precisely.

The industry needs to take a stand against pirates, and this seems like it'll help.

Developers are losing a lot on their games, and it's hurting the industry.

So you'd rather have developers completely stop making money because about 70% of the gamers pirate their games? I'd even say the majority of the people on GameSpot pirates their games. Why? Because they're too goddamn spoiled by their parents, and expect to get everything for free.

It's an excellent idea for developers, yeah they'll catch a lot of flack if they do it, but people will piss and moan about but people will still by video games. Everyone wants to make money and these companies make really good games get screwed because of rentals, used copies, and pirates. So who will pay legitmate consumers, sucks but that's life. I'd pay $30 for a game at the store then another $30 bucks once I got home to enter in a code and unlock the ending or what not. Anyone that sees a problem with this is either a pirate or just ingnorant to what goes on in life and business. If anything it will make it easier to get games used because people will by a game play half of it then go man the ending or other half isn't worth $30.

Why should developers stand by while people rent/complete their games for only a fraction of what they should pay?

Renting should be a test for if you actually want to buy a game or not.

Renting a game, completing it, and never considering a purchase is screwing the developer.

Yeah I know.

But if a person rents a game, completes it, and never buys it, does that benefit the developer?

And if a person buys a game, and sells it to someone else, does the developer get any of that money?

I don't see what the problem is, just buy new games and you get the whole game, the fact is devs see used games as the same thing as piracy since when you buy a $40 used game from eb you are not support the dev but giving all your money to eb only for them to continue to rip you off with over priced used games, things to stop overpriced used games sound good to me, 5% difference between new and used is a joke.

They could combat the second hand market by steadily lowering their price...

If there's only a $5 difference between new and used, I'll get the new one.

THIS

how can anyone say its a good idea?

some ppl cant afford to buy full games let along have to extra to see an ending...WTF?!

ppl rent games when they are in doubt of a quality of a game.

would you expect universal studios to make you pay to watch the ending of a movie you rented from blockbusters? of course not.

this idea is just plain dumb and i hope epic games fails at this

Well if they're going to do this then they're going to have to increase the quality of game by tenfolds because some games aren't worth buying new at full price. If developers are going to cry about retailers selling used games then they need to stop making gimmicky trash and work harder for our wallets.

If it only affects the people that pirate games then I'm all for it.  They could pay for the ending while regular folks who bought the game gets to experience the full game.

it is a good idea, if you buy used you don't support the dev are are effectivly pirating the game, one game sold 20 time is like 20 downloads from file sharing sites.  you can't defend used games in any way to say its not bad for the dev its only good for eb which would probably die pretty fast without used games.

If buying used games is the same as pirating them, then purchasing items at a garage sale is the same as stealing.

In both circumstances the result is the same for the manufacturer.

If there is a rule for how much retailers can sell used games for, it'll do much more than what the DLC can do. If used games are consitently slightly cheaper than new games, more people will buy new games. But its not always the case because theres alot of variation within a store and theres also Ebay and Amazon.

I still think that Game devs are trying to attempt the reverse. If theres more incentives to buying new games, it'll work much better than punishment for purchasing used. some sort of dlc bonus that doesnt even cost money like the flashback map pack for Gears 2.

Do those rental fees amount to the same as purchasing the game new?

And it doesn't matter what your rights are as a consumer. You're still screwing the developers by letting someone else play the game without paying.

I don't see what the problem is, just buy new games and you get the whole game, the fact is devs see used games as the same thing as piracy since when you buy a $40 used game from eb you are not support the dev but giving all your money to eb only for them to continue to rip you off with over priced used games, things to stop overpriced used games sound good to me, 5% difference between new and used is a joke. imprezawrx500
Gamestop are really shady they tend to sell used games as new games full price or sell the newer release games that cost $59.99 used for $54.99-$56.99.

Yeah I know.

But if a person rents a game, completes it, and never buys it, does that benefit the developer?

And if a person buys a game, and sells it to someone else, does the developer get any of that money?

This seems like a way of ensuring developers get more money for their product, which can only be a good thing.

Rental companies pay rental fees, so yes. As for buying used, once I buy a game, its mine. I can do what I want with it, not what the developer says I can do. This will strangle gaming.

Do those rental fees amount to the same as purchasing the game new?

And it doesn't matter what your rights are as a consumer. You're still screwing the developers by letting someone else play the game without paying.

Hopefully you realize that distributors sell those copies for the expressed purpose of renting them out. When Blockbuster buys a game to rent out, they don't run to Best Buy and purchase a $60 copy. They order a "Rental Copy" for a much higher price.

And, obviously, the developers and distributors are aware of and allow these transactions. Otherwise they wouldn't offer such licenses to begin with.

thats not our problem. its the company who sells used games problem.

superjim42

Exactly.

Which is why those companies are wanting to stop this problem.

I don't blame them. I wouldn't want people using my product without paying me either.

They do this, and I bet you the game industry will die.

I for one would be more inclined to pirate to "teach them a lesson" as opposed to supporting these very unfair practices. I always support developers, but if they want to treat me like a criminal, I will act like one.

yes but the fact stands that not every one can afford brand new £40-50, $50-60 games

used games is a better option for some.

my library consists of half being used games

Sounds like a perfect idea. You buy the game, you get the ending for free. You pirate the game, you have to pay extra for the ending. Only people complaining would be the pirates.stappy

Well, until they pirate the ending, and then only people who rented the game get screwed...Â
