First off, I want to point out that OnLive constantly upgrades their servers. That's how this guy got his hands on one. It's not in use.

Sources:

Here and here.

Specs:

  • Intel E6300 Core2Duo
  • Seagate SATA 320GB HDD
  • 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 Ram (This is non ECC which also tipped me off to the server being a more custom job)
  • EVGA 9800GT PCI-E Graphics Card
  • Custom PCI-E card that has very little in the way of identification. It contains a DVI port and 2x NIC ports. The DVI port has a connector which goes between the DVI on this card and the DVI on the video card. It also has a wired connector on the oposite side of the card that looked to be a cable connecting to the motherboard. It does say "Copyright Onlive" on the card in several places, this is what sealed the deal for me for the server being an OnLive server.
  • What appears to be an Intel custom motherboard, didn't see a model number but didn't really look all that hard. The back has a single NIC and 2 USB ports from the mobo.

OnLive's Video Encoder:

The connector between the Video Card and the OnLive Encoder:

More powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360 confirmed. ;)

Sure. Then maybe you should change it to " the future of console gaming". I find far more convenience in Steam and GOG.

For some reason I always thought it's using a custom GPU.

Also dont change the fact they said hardware would up to date to play all the latest game at maximum. That hardware is wack for games like Metro 2033, Crysis and Arma 2.

9800 GT is identical to the 8800 GT, from 2007. Close enough right?

Cool I could build a PC that is better for 400-450 USD or one that is around the same performance for 330USD.

It basically has the specs of my old 2007 budget PC.

Bought my computer in the world's most expensive country back in 2007 for 900$ and it's way better than that, only thing I've replaced was that I now have GTS250 which I got for free as a replacement when my old one broke down. Thought they'd have some behemoth supercomputers for this

I remember at one point rikusaki said Just Cause 2 had problems because it was poorly optimized for PC in the first place, which is such a damn lie, that game runs so well on max settings on even mid-ranged PCs, now we know why, old-ass hardware.

It's not like this is going to be the hardware they are going to use for the next five years.

Just because one of the servers has this hardware does not mean that they all do. Rather, this can very easily be older hardware and/or could be used by games that do not require beefy graphics. Depending on what game you play, you'd be getting a feed from a different set of hardware.

The PS3 and 360 were obsolete out the gate. This isn't bad considering the MicroConsole is going for $66. ;)

Rikusaki

Judging by how bad the games look the upgrades won't be much.

And even if they had 4 6970s it would still look worse because of lower resolutions and bad compression that rivals youtube's horrible compression.

I will stick with the superior quality of an actually built PC that gives better results and ends up being cheaper because I don't have to put a hole in my wallet to pay for internet.

Oh and I own my games and can mod them and play them at higher settings, AA+AF and higher resolutions.

:|

Proof please. I want to know what these new ones are using, 5970s? i7s?

Steve Perlman says it in every presentation...There's even a video in OnLive itself explaining this.

Anyway, here's your proof. It's in almost EVERY article about the service.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/everything_you_need_know_about_onlive_is_your_next_gaming_console

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2343710,00.asp

http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/03/24/can-onlives-cloud-gaming-service-threaten-traditional-consoles/

http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/71273.html

http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/200913/3287/onlive-set-to-make-gaming-hardware-and-software-obsolete

He mentions it again in this interview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vupeHUM2_BM

The above is proof that OnLive upgrades their servers.

If they didn't upgrade, that would defeat the purpose of the service, don't you think? ;)
