Surprise hit meaning it did REALLY well and LOTS of people bought the game, fueling its success. I'm just curious, because I was trying to think back and all the games that were massive hits were either hyped or marketed as such, and people know about them before they came out. Does this really happen that often, or has it actually even happened? Just need some examples, I guess.shsonlineThe original Tomb Raider :) Nobody knew about it before it was released, and it was one of the first third person shooters (in 3D)

DMC also didnt have too much.

Katamari Damacy did really well for what was expected, if memory serves.Jandurin
Halo- The game that saved the xbox.Shazenab
Metroid Prime. Everybody thought it was going to be the next Castlevania 64, because Metroid games were supposed to be 2D and not 3D.
Then it came and blew everyones minds. It is now considered one of the best games of all time. The third best game at gamerankings.com
guys there was enough Halo hype to float the Titanic.Tasman_basicNo, honestly it was a mega surprise there was hype before E3 2001 where Halo had an appauling showing, it died down.

Okay, maybe I didn't do a good job of explaining. What I'm actually wondering was there a surprise BIG hit, not like a minor hit (viewtiful joe, katamari, etc.)
Metroid doesn't count because Super Metroid. That's enough to generate a good size of interest. i'm talking about a game that after being released, we knew nothing about it and all of the sudden, WOW, THIS IS A GREAT GAME, how'd it fall under the radar?
When I got my Xbox, I got it for Halo when Xbox was first released. Alot of people did. So I don't think it qualifies as a surprise hit. ALOT of people knew about it and knew enough about it to buy the console and that as their first game.
I don't know, I could be grasping for straws here, but I don't see the ones mentioned as console defining games that came out of left field.

I'm gonna repeat myself and say Viewtiful Joe agreed ^^^lzorro
Sorry to say, Viewtiful Joe wan't that big. It was a good game, and it did okay, but it wasn't that big.
Hell, Kamiya's DMC was bigger than VJ. He made both games, and DMC was more of a surprise hit, and I don't even know if even IT qualifies. The fact VJ came out for PSP and PS2 kinda shows it didn't do well enough to remain exclusive.
VJ 1 for PS2 was better too, since he added DANTE.

Perhaps Halo is the biggest suprise hit last gen. I would've said GTA 3 except, GTA 3 did receive some good previews but the same can't be said about Halo (framerate problems, graphics didn't quite shape up, launch title). Its safe to say people had higher expectations from GTA 3 (back in the day) instead of Halo.

I disagree. I recall HALO having A TON OF hype by Allard, and especially Ed Fries. Big time.
GTA 3 was regarded as just a 3d sequel to a 2d game.
In the end, I would say Halo and GTA3, with the edge going to GTA 3.
Also, to the tC,
GOD OF WAR, besides GH my other pick, was HUGE considering.

As far as I remember it, Halo didn't have more hype than GTA 3. Infact, even after the reviews starting pouring in (around the same time), it still didn't have more hype than GTA 3. Ofcourse, the sales numbers say it all. Allard has to promote MS premiere titles (including PGR and others). Thats the way it works. However, the people and media don't have to eat it up. After all, he works for MS.
Halo- The game that saved the xbox.ShazenabActually, Halo made the Xbox (seeing as how it was a launch title).
[QUOTE="Son_of_Some"]Nintendogs, Brain Age and WarioWare. Who disagrees? Let me know.

Way to list off the handhelds and reveal your age. Still, those are big FOR Handhelds...

Haha! Reveal my age? What do you suppose my age is? huh?
Still, no one knew nothing about those titles and they sold like hotcakes.

Yeah, I guess. Handhelds just don't seem relevent as the market and the type of games that sell on them, aren't really a suprise.
Tetris is probably #1 for all I know.
