Nintendogs, Brain Age and WarioWare. Who disagrees? Let me know.

Son_of_Some

Way to list off the handhelds and reveal your age. Still, those are big FOR Handhelds...

Haha! Reveal my age? What do you suppose my age is? huh?

Still, no one knew nothing about those titles and they sold like hotcakes.

Def. Teen. Just a great guess. You see, the DS is relatively new to my generation, so anyone that would bring it to the table here, when older systems like the PS2, would have to be young.

Super smash bros. Melee. As I recall, it wasn't too hyped. But after a while it came out, and slowly people started trying and buying and realized it was fantastic.

Halo had hype

GTAIII had none. In my school only about two people actually bought the game when it first came out or cared for it.

about 3months later everyone else did.

That is a game that is called a surprize hit.

Pokemon... I knew it was a hit in Japan, but I don't think anyone figured it's Japanese heavy influence would be a worldwide phenominon.

Well, the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (for the XBox) could be considered a surprise hit. Movie tie-ins normally don't do well, and we've had plenty of total failures. I'm sure no one expected this game to score not just well but terrifically: a solid AAA.

Haha! Damn you got me with the "Def. Teen," but that's going to change in a month. Well since you want older games I could list some games that I was playing as a kid. Street Fighter II was a hit, Pokemon was THE hit, Resident Evil was big at it's time, but Brain Age and Nintendogs still beat them.(except Pokemon) We could just list the Marios, Zeldas and Sonics, but no.

Yeah Poke was huge...and RE too. Heck, tomb raider. Street fighter, heck that was a suprise!

Oh TC, don't forget SOCOM, that ended up big for its day.

[QUOTE="gingerdivid"][QUOTE="Tasman_basic"]guys there was enough Halo hype to float the Titanic.Shazenab
No, honestly it was a mega surprise there was hype before E3 2001 where Halo had an appauling showing, it died down.

Yep nobody thought much of halo at all. Who would blame them bungie weren't that much of a proven quality on anything other than the mac...

the 2001 E3 demo was a better game than what finaly came out. It doesn't matter what platform a dev' is proven on because good is good. Myth and Oni had already proven bungie to the PC market anyway. Your so full of it it's not funny.

KOTOR. I still remember it's hype although I can't recall whether it was expected to sell well. I realise it is also on PC.

Uh...Bioware? Lucasarts?
It wasn't excatly a 'suprise' hit.

Well, if the PS2 is the first example of an 'older system' that you thought of, that seems to be saying a lot about your age.
Oh, and DS's are for 'everyone'. He could be a 40-year old housewife, for all you know.

[QUOTE="shsonline"]Surprise hit meaning it did REALLY well and LOTS of people bought the game, fueling its success. I'm just curious, because I was trying to think back and all the games that were massive hits were either hyped or marketed as such, and people know about them before they came out. Does this really happen that often, or has it actually even happened? Just need some examples, I guess.Dark_Gamer_Kid
The original Tomb Raider :) Nobody knew about it before it was released, and it was one of the first third person shooters (in 3D)

Resident Evil murdered that game to me....i remember playin RE at 10, good memories...surprised at beat that game at such a young age

Recently, I think Dead Rising qualifies, at least for me personally. Before the game was released, I don't think it received much hype other than the sophomoric and sarcastic "Dude, you're in a mall...filled with ZOMBIES!!! How can that NOT be awesome?" kind. I thought the game would get A if it was lucky, but then it shocked me by getting a solid AA from almost everywhere. It sold over a million copies, and became one of my favorite games on the 360. You all may disagree with me, but that's the most recent one I could think of.

Everyone in this thread should stop saying Halo.  That game was hyped beyond reason.

I personally haven't played the game for some reason, but God of War.  No one actually knew about the game until it came out, and all my friends think it's the best game on PS2.  If PC were included, Half-Life without a doubt.

Eyetoy Play. It was the first video camera based game to sell over 1 million units and the game is still going under the radar.

I don't remember any hype for Halo. I was all on the Gamecube bandwagon then, and what I thought of MS's Xbox could be summarized as "crap-box." Then I got one for Christmas, played Halo, and now look at me.  Xbox fan for life now.

Halo 1 had a horrible showing at E3 2001, and as a result most people weren't expecting much from it. We all know how that turned out.
