Sometimes I look at Halo and MGS and say what happened to videogames?

On system wars, yes.

MGS4 is sweet, but everyone knew sonic and mario. People know master chief, but casuals don't know too much about snake other than fans of the series. I don't think it's quite like mario and sonic.

Last time I checked a lot of people still liked Mario tc. People lost love for Sonic because he's been in a lot of crap games.

I know but, i played mgs and i pretty much enjoyed it (mgs4=best game ever imo). people were acting out as if MGS and Halo were bad games, and they wonder what happened to gaming when they look at mario and sonic?? it evolved that's what happened, what? you expected that every game that was gonna come out was gonna be like mario? get real, bu buh teh fun; MGS, COD, HALO, GOW, GeOW, GTA, RE, TEKKEN, DOA, and DMC are fun, the gaming industry is doing fine with out people that are acting so hardcore *****ing about it.

The cold hard truth is that Sonic (new sonic) sucks monkeys by modern standards - and yet you'll still see Sonic-lovers defend Sega to the grave. Sonic has been dying since Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles - Sonic Adventure was a nice game for the 2D / 3D jump, but Sega hasn't been able to advance the mark from there - when you're stuck basically at the same point you were in the Dreamcast era a generation and a half later (really almost two generations, because they pulled out so early) there' no way you can keep the love burning.

And Mario? WTF are you talking about is all I can say. Mario Galaxy was nominated / awarded GOTY by more sites, magazines, and TV shows than I can keep track of - it was talked about for many months and gushed over just as much by the press as MGS and Halo.

Hey, we still want diversions from time to time. Not every game has to be some epic tale where the world is at risk and the protagonist learns to love again. Some of us would just like to bash a Goomba's head in instead of shooting down Metal Gear or something.

Time to move on and play other games besides Mario(Mario Galaxy was awesome) and Sonic(he sucks now).

Try some Crysis or Stalker

Try some Witcher or Mass Effect

Some Halo 3, MGS 4, Gears of War, Sins of a Solar, etc

Assassins Creed, Ninja Gaiden 2, Devil May Cry 4, or some Zack and Wikki.

Gaming evolved.

Mario is still around... and his home console is reigning King if I'm not mistaken, lol.

All Metal Gear Solid games feature as the protagonist an elite soldier trying to sneak into some hidden compound and stop Metal Gear (or Shagohad, in the case of Snake Eater), all the while being easily manipulated by his superiors. The only thing that's changed is the setting; the original was in Africa somewhere, then Africa again, then Alaska, then New York, then 60's Russia, and now it's...don't know where, I didn't play it.

No evolution in MGS? From basically 2 lines of text to a whole 9 hours worth of story? No evolution there I guess? FF changed from a no story game to one with a heavy focus on it. Zelda did the same as soon as ALttP was released. Mario and Sonic are basically the same idea with scenario change. No story whatsoever.
