First, the official news:

Sony announces PS3-related job cuts in US -- forgets to mention when or how many

Posted Jun 7th 2007 5:00AM by Thomas Ricker
Filed under: Gaming

It's not like we didn't see it coming or anything what with Sony's game division -- home of the PS3 -- recently posting a $1.91 billion loss for the year. But man, our hearts go out to those whose jobs at Sony Computer Entertainment are now on the chopping block. Thing is, Sony, while announcing plans to cut jobs in the US, is only turning the screw deeper by not providing any details. The move comes as Sony struggles to keep up with Nintendo which again snagged top-honors for the 4th consecutive month in the US market: 360,000 Wiis sold to the PS3's 82,000 while Microsoft sold 174,000 Xbox 360s. The gap between the Wii and PS3 sales in Japan is just as bad, if not worse. Fortunately for Sony, their Bravia LCD TVs, VAIO computers, and Handycams are all doing well enough to (mostly) offset the PS3 related losses. We'll have to wait and see if Sony's summer game catalog, bigger disks, and possible price cuts can reverse SCE's fortunes.

---------------------------------------------+++++++++++++++++++++++-----------------------------------------

Next, the PS3 insider known as "Sony Prophet" on the PS3forums talking about the job cuts a DAY before the official pres release today!

http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=76759

Sony is in seriously deep ****.

You all know me as a fairly obvious Sony loyalist - and I still love my PS3. Damn thing's fun, even if the pickings are slim. My PSP goes everywhere I go. I love it. I say this because I don't want you to think this is fanboy rhetoric. I just want you to know what's going on.

Anyway, here's the situation...

PS3 hasn't been selling so hot. It's a fact that no one can reasonably contest. The system is sold at a monumental loss (several hundred dollars each, in fact) with the plan to make up the difference in software sales and royalties. Looking at the current situation (just go visit a Gamestop and check out the PS3 section), you can see the trouble with that in the short term.

Now one might say the long term plan is sound. Lose lots of money now, make it up later. Well there's another problem - many of the really huge 2007 titles are now 2008 titles. Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid, etc - and many of the killer-app exclusives (Assassins Creed, Devil May Cry) are no longer exclusives. You can say Sony planned for that too. The best titles for any system, after all, are the first party titles. God of War 2 is one of SCEs biggest successes... and while games like Ratchet and LAIR have their own online followings, they are nevertheless niche titles... not GTA/GoW/Halo level blockbusters. Even Uncharted, which is amazing btw, is slipping under the radar.

Ok, now that you know all that... how are the short term losses looking now? Well, they're bloody astronomical. The short term losses are far beyond what anyone expected. The predictions of this situation were felt a few months ago when the entire company was placed on a hiring freeze. That is, no new employees can be hired no matter the losses. This is a pretty standard thing in big business when it looks like FYE goals are going to come up short. It happens every few years - especially when new hardware is launched... so there wasn't too much cause for concern.

But today was a massacre. SCE has laid off an undisclosed number of employees world wide. It's been a trickle here and there, but today the axe came down - suddenly, and without any warning. You can be assured a press release will be inbound sometime tomorrow with the usual buzzwords "Downsizing", "Stronger position going forward", etc... but what this means for anyone following the so-called "Console Wars" is that Sony is in seriously deep financial ****.
They're a major company, they can take it, and they may yet weather this... but this should come as a staggering blow to consumer confidence. Sony is trying to cut their losses - and should those losses continue - what else might they cut?

This will be my last post as an industry insider.

The PS3 is a big, gaping money wound. A division that Sony once relied on for profitability is now sinking, and with the PS2 slowly slipping off the market radar, their long term situation looks grim. Microsoft really pulled a number on them, as did Nintendo. Microsoft, and companies like Epic, Betheseda, Valve, and Bioware are putting their PC titles on simultaneous release on the 360, and its library from 1st / 2nd party development has exploded. The Wii is simply inexpensive, and has Japan addicted.

Sony is in a bad place - a $600 console doesn't sell well, period. While I own (and love) my 27" HDTV, it's pretty obvious that the "miracle" 50" 1080p HDTV for $500 isn't coming anytime soon, and the general public will be slow to buy $35 movies and $500 Blu-Ray players, just as they were slow to adopt DVD.  In any case, I don't know what Sony can do, if they hope to eventually make money on the PS3, hanging on to it through 2008 could make sense, or at least holding until they sell out current inventory... we'll see, right?

Why didnt sony just let Microsoft and Nintendo have the next gen consoles and stick with the ps2, surely they would be so much better off? or bring out upgrades for it, like making a bluray player for the ps2.Instead of being greedy and forcing their own demise.

WOW! If Sony is doomed by cutting 100 jobs in a restructring process then IBM, DELL, and MOTOROLA must all be ready to close its doors.

actually SCEE fired/layed-off 160 employees. SCEA fired/layed-off an undisclosed amount of employees (probably more than 160). SCE of Japan is set to fire/lay-off several employees soon. the reason people are making a big deal about this is because the sony computer entertainment division only has 4500 employees. so far they fired close to to 400 employees (160 for SCEE and 200 from SCEA, just my opinion) that's almost 10% of the division!!! and that's without the job cuts for the japanese division!!!

link

quote:

"According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, Sony is considering a global restructuring of its game unit and job cuts may happen not only in Europe, but also in Japan and North America. Sony's game unit is currently comprised of about 4,500 employees worldwide."

keep in mind that this article is from April 18, 2007, two months before the recent SCEA jobs cuts.

I still think Sony shot themselves in the foot when designing the PS3. They spent too much on the hardware and not enough on the software and this explains the loss of exclusives and slow trickle of high quality games. While Sony was trying to make an all-singing all-dancing supercomputer, Microsoft went round buying the rights to all the hotly anticipated games up for grabs.

Sadly for Sony, despite putting all their hopes into the cell/blu-ray combination, it doesn't seem to be paying off. Multiplat titles have performed better on the 360 and the first-party titles don't look any better than the best the 360 has to offer. Yes it may eventually outperform the 360, but by then it could well be too late as the PC begins to outstrip the consoles by greater and greater margins, making any superiority in graphics look negligible. The Xbox is certainly a much more powerful machine than the PS2, but does anyone care now?

lol, that is not the explanation for loss of multi-plats. The cost of NextGen development is the number one reason for everything going multi-plat. Much bigger teams are required and better technology is much more expensive.

Most multi-plats are performing better on the 360 due to the fact that it's the lead platform for said games. This should be obvious. Some are better on the PS3 even after being ported. Oblivion anyone? Sony also did not put all hopes into just Cell and Bluray. There is much more to offer in the PS3 than just a great processor and low cost HD movie player. This should also be obvious.

Had Sony not been so overly confident, and arrogant in thinking people would lay down $600 because "they were the best and they know it" as stated by Ken Kutagari, these people would not be losing their jobs. There is nothing else to blame but Sony's own detachment from it's loyal userbase it tried to milk this time around by force-feeding a unestablished format (blu-ray) which drove up the cost.  Now hardworking people from all walks of life will be looking for new jobs or standing in the unemployment line.

GG Sony, Now let go of the KUNG-FU grip you have on your few remaining exclusives cause im sure the people you laid off probably wont' be able to afford a PS3 anymore to play them.

Exactly. And as bad as it may be, it seems most people completely ignored the part at the bottom that said, "Sony is a big company, and they just may yet weather this." As unfortunate as it may seem right now, cutting corners (and jobs) is part of this weathering process that while unfortunate for those it is happening to, it has to be done for the long term strategy of the company.

I believe that they will firmly be able to weather this storm, but at a loss of the market in the gaming division. Sony will end up probably third, and maybe second this time around, but I do not think that the PS3 is going anywhere. They have WAY too much riding on it, and they are going to do whatever is necessary to try and counter as much of this situation as they can because there is still a HUGE market out there for the PS3.

Sony just needs to get those big name titles released and needs to figure out a way to have a PS3 price cut, and Sony will be right back in this thing. I would be riding David Jaffee's and Corey Barlog's a$$es to get on GOW 3 NOW. The PS3 needs another big game like that. Also get out games that casuals will want to pick up like GT5. Games like LBP will help out immensly as well I believe.

As a PS3 owner and supporter it really just sucks to see such a GREAT system getting such a hard time. Yes, it is expensive but Sony made one fine piece of equipment here, and the games are going to be there. Some people just lose all hope and patience right at the outset, but when all is said and done, I have to be a realist and say that ultimately....that 600.00 price tag is all that is holding the PS3 at bay. And the sooner they recognize this, and find a way to remedy it, the better off they will be in the end.

Good try at trying to twist the facts around. The fact is most the people just laughing at the PS3 . No one is laughing at people at people getting fired. If the PS3 was not a overpriced pile of junk then those people would have their jobs still. If Sony put out a normal console then maybe it would have sold better and people would not have lost their job.

Sony is greedy given the fact that they tried to force an unestablished format down it's user's throats, so it could later collect royalties if it became a standard. Now it's feeling the repercussions of being greedy, it's to bad many of it workers are paying for it's greedy corporations actions.

Yes, it is out of most people's price range, but it is NOT a pile of junk, lol. That is such a fanboyish statement. Keep in mind that the PS3 is not the one lemoning out on people left and right.

Ah yes, and Microsoft and Nintendo are not greedy corporations?

[QUOTE="laughingman42"]Dude that sucks I dont know why people losing their jobs would make anyone happy. are you people so obsessed that you actually like the fact that people are losing their jobs just so your console of choice gets a few better games?outcasthero

Sony is Greedy period. Don't try to spin it another way. A good corporation will not gamble on unestablished formats and later pay the expensives of it's mistakes by eliminating the Livelihood of it's workers. The people who should be laid off are  it's corporate executives that make six figures who gambled on trying to corner the next format war in thier favor.

I am not spinning anything, bud. Sony is FAR from the only corporation within this industy that is greedy. You think that Microsoft or Nintendo would not do the same? Think again.

Microsoft yes, totally greedy, but it doesn't gamble on stupid decisions and layoff it's workers.

Nintendo? well, they are selling their system the cheapest of all.........

Also... Nintendo, a much smaller company than Sony, had many reasons to sue Lik-Sang, but it was Sony who outspent a small indie buisness (that contributed alot in gaming) in court just so they could save pennies on the dollar.

Yes you are spinning.Yes every company tries ways to make money but Fact is Sony is the one that wanted to use Blu-ray which upped the price. They are also the ones that used the cell which many developers have said was hard to develop for. Both those products will help line the pockets of other areas of Sony. MS did not force hardware that was not needed for gaming. All the add on are optional. Sony got cocky and now employees that had no say in the PS3 are paying for it.

What am I spinning? I just happen to support the PS3 and that disagrees with your stance on the comapny, as well as the console. Well TOO BAD. Everybody has an opinion, not just you. Don't you just love it?

Sony took a gamble and it did not pay off. They did not forsee all of these layoffs, just like any company that ultimately has to make sacrifices in order to survive doesn't. It is unfortunate, but it does not make Sony the devil for trying to build an innovative console that unfortunately has just failed to resonate with a casual audience.

there were alot of reasons segas hardware business went under. sony was only a tiny part of that. if playstation dies then you can pretty much not expect to get the level of cool updates in the next console gen that you saw in this one.

People fail to realize that if Playstation ceases to exist, then Microsoft and Nintendo will turn the console gaming market into a casual, microtransaction hell. People ignorantly pray for the death of Sony, but tend to forget what Playstation has meant to console gaming.

By spinning I mean you are saying that MS and Nintendo do the same things. While all 3 do like to make a profit. The main reason PS3 is being hurt is something that only they did. They are the ones that made a $200 more then its closest rival. They are the only ones that forced a product like Blu-Ray. They are obnly ones that made a system very hard to develop for because cell comes from Sony. Thier cocky attitude made them lose 3rd party developer suuport with games like GTA4 because they did not want to pay. These types of things only Sony did and now people loose their jobs.

No, like what Nintendo is doing with the Wii.
