People fail to realize that if Playstation ceases to exist, then Microsoft and Nintendo will turn the console gaming market into a casual, microtransaction hell. People ignorantly pray for the death of Sony, but tend to forget what Playstation has meant to console gaming.outcasthero
Stop acting like if Sony going or staying determines if gaming lives or dies. There was gaming before Sony and if Sony ever goes there still will be game systems. Other companys will take Sonys place if that ever happened.

I tell you Sony might just not have it in them to compete with Microsoft in the consoles' world.

Who? Let's hypothetically say EA maybe? Enjoy paying 60.00 for half a game, then enjoy paying another 30.00 or so to get the rest of it via microtransaction downloads. This is where Microsoft is taking the market, and if EA jumped into the picture, it would be a milkfest galore.

As for Nintendo...well I guess you can enjoy playing more cheap Mario games at retail prices on inferior hardware with a gimmicky motion sensing remote that is used as a casual "trendy" sales ploy. Sounds like a real blast. Just remember what console you played your GTA, God of War, GT, R&C, DMC, MGS, and FF type games on in the past.

[QUOTE="laughingman42"]Dude that sucks I dont know why people losing their jobs would make anyone happy. are you people so obsessed that you actually like the fact that people are losing their jobs just so your console of choice gets a few better games?x037leox

Exactly. And as bad as it may be, it seems most people completely ignored the part at the bottom that said, "Sony is a big company, and they just may yet weather this." As unfortunate as it may seem right now, cutting corners (and jobs) is part of this weathering process that while unfortunate for those it is happening to, it has to be done for the long term strategy of the company.

I believe that they will firmly be able to weather this storm, but at a loss of the market in the gaming division. Sony will end up probably third, and maybe second this time around, but I do not think that the PS3 is going anywhere. They have WAY too much riding on it, and they are going to do whatever is necessary to try and counter as much of this situation as they can because there is still a HUGE market out there for the PS3.

Sony just needs to get those big name titles released and needs to figure out a way to have a PS3 price cut, and Sony will be right back in this thing. I would be riding David Jaffee's and Corey Barlog's a$$es to get on GOW 3 NOW. The PS3 needs another big game like that. Also get out games that casuals will want to pick up like GT5. Games like LBP will help out immensly as well I believe.

As a PS3 owner and supporter it really just sucks to see such a GREAT system getting such a hard time. Yes, it is expensive but Sony made one fine piece of equipment here, and the games are going to be there. Some people just lose all hope and patience right at the outset, but when all is said and done, I have to be a realist and say that ultimately....that 600.00 price tag is all that is holding the PS3 at bay. And the sooner they recognize this, and find a way to remedy it, the better off they will be in the end.

Sony is Greedy period. Don't try to spin it another way. A good corporation will not gamble on unestablished formats and later pay the expensives of it's mistakes by eliminating the Livelihood of it's workers. The people who should be laid off are it's corporate executives that make six figures who gambled on trying to corner the next format war in thier favor.

Well, Ken Kutaragi already got fired, so..

I just really hope Sony finds a way to pull out of this. I may like and evangelize my Xbox 360, call me a lemming if you want, but i'm a gamer first and foremost, and it really sucks to see Sony in such a bad position.

Downloadable content, expansion packs like for Oblivion. It is where the market is heading, especially with Microsoft. If you cannot see it, then I guess you will be in for a suprise. As for Nintendo, I was talking the ultra casual game route, not Microtransactions.

As much as I don't care for the PS3 or Sony myself, I doubt they're going out of business for now. I'm sure we'll see a PS4 in the future.

Fanboys can't see the truth, apparently. Sony is doing the same and taking it further, Sony is making Home which makes gamers all excited but in truth is a advertising software to have on the ps3 so Sony can charge developers for putting ads on there, so everytime you get there you will see ads everywhere. Funny you should talk about half-games when Sony is releasing a 12 hour game with NO multiplayer whatsoever (Uncharted), yea that's worth the $60. Sony doesn't make gaming any better, and gaming would still go on perhaps even better without Sony.

Downloadable content is optional. I have not bought one from 360 yet. I was never forced into downloadable maps and stuff unlike the forced Blu-Ray from PS3. Also I would much rather the Wii which starts off affordable win then a $600 PS3 win. What would happen if PS3 did win? next gen more forced hardware and $850 price tag this time? Also as far as 1/2 games look at the PS3. two of the biggest titles Uncharted and lair are both only 10-12 hours and no online. Gears looks better then both and has online.

Sony has failed themselves as a company, the PS3 has spread it's poisonous tentacles to all divisions bleeding them dry of every last penny.  They might as well put themselves up for sale because there is no way they can recover from such a fatal blow.  The final nail in their ill fated coffin has been sealed.   Burn in hell Sony . . . . burn in hell . . . . . . . . .

I understand your point, and I certainly do not particulary like, nor agree with the pricetag of the PS3. We all like to save money, right? And it is obvious that the gamble to go with the more expensive hardware is backfiring hardcore on Sony. But it does not change the fact that it is indeed a fine piece of equipment, and it will have a great game library.

But being a realist here, it is unfortunate that the price of the darn thing is isolating itself away from the common consumer.

Good try at trying to twist the facts around. The fact is most the people just laughing at the PS3 . No one is laughing at people at people getting fired. If the PS3 was not a overpriced pile of junk then those people would have their jobs still. If Sony put out a normal console then maybe it would have sold better and people would not have lost their job.

Sony is greedy given the fact that they tried to force an unestablished format down it's user's throats, so it could later collect royalties if it became a standard. Now it's feeling the repercussions of being greedy, it's to bad many of it workers are paying for it's greedy corporations actions.

You probably just said the smartest thing in this entire thread.

I am 100% sheep.  The wii is the only next gen  have.  For so many months I've been defending the wii and attacking the PS3.  I grew to hate some cows for some of the ignorant things they said.

It may be a little early to say something like this; but I cannot imagine a gaming industry with no sony or playstation.  I mean sony is a massive company and they can make up for the PS3's losses from other divisions like other electronics...but all I'm saying is, if the PS3 DOESNT pull through..(which it probably will I thin)k...well it will be a dark day for cows, lemmings, sheeps, hermits..everyone.

Wowza, lots of people making some pretty rash assumptions about this whole situation here... first and foremost, I am no expert on the ins and outs of business practices... so I wont make any rash assumptions. But to be honest, I am not too worried.

Firstly... just wanna say that yeah, It is kinda uncool the way some people genuinely seemed delighted at this news, people losing their jobs isn't delightful, uncool.

Secondly, do people -honestly- think that after the billions that Sony has invested into this machine, that they would just jump ship at this point when it is (in all honesty) not selling THAT horribly, especially for this time of the year and a small selection of games? Be patient, lets see what happens in the next few (crucial) months when a lot of the heavy hitters come out.

And I agree with the people who say that Sony should not be out of the running, they have done a lot for the gaming industry (something people conveniently forget) and I am completely looking forward to more hard-hitting additions to their business plan in general. Fanboyism aside, more competition = better for the gamers, plain and simple.

Also... lets put away our e-peens for a moment and remember that none of us are giant multi-billion corporations, nor do we own any (unless I am really underestimating the crowd on system wars), so lets not pretend that we know what is best for any company, nor how 'things would have been' if Sony did this or that. Lets say for example, that Sony released a machine that is nearly identical to the 360... what reason would anyone have of buying it other than exclusive games? Same goes with the Wii. I firmly believe that it is a good thing to have a wide range of different consoles to fit the needs of everyone.

All that said... er... as you were gentlemen.

Downsizings with number of jobs cut so large that Sony decided to keep it undisclosed?  Yah happens all the time What happens even MORE often is a company losing 1.9 billion dollars on the gaming platform that was allegedly going sell so well.

I read a study that said WORLD HUNGER can be 100% wiped out if the UN was given 1.8 billion dollars.  Well sony just blew more than it takes to cure world hunger.

Why didnt sony just let Microsoft and Nintendo have the next gen consoles and stick with the ps2, surely they would be so much better off? or bring out upgrades for it, like making a bluray player for the ps2.Instead of being greedy and forcing their own demise.marklarmer

You are aware that they also have a loss cut from the Cell processor development, however they are not taking losses on Cell by any means, Blu Ray is what put the PS3 at a high price, the console itself otherwise is relatively cheap by comparison. However word on the street is that development and production of all Blu Ray devices is getting cheaper every month and it is not going to be long before you will be able to find Blu Ray players for the price of HD-DVD players (which right now is only a 300 dollar price gap at the moment, for Canada at least).

actually, the RSX costs $4 more than the blu-ray drive. this is from 2006 but is the most recent (read: only) report of the costs of the components of the ps3. the "other components and manufacturing" costs the most @ $148.

edit:

sony will be releasing a $500 standalone unit this summer (which may be obsolete by november 2007) but it may not reach hd dvd levels until early next year. hd dvd players cost as low as $300 now and may cost $200 or $250 by this christmas.

The biggest mistake Sony made was using the PS3 as a Trojan Horse for introducing Blu-Ray into an market not yet ready to make the dive into a next-generation movie format.  To make things worse, I am totally convinced that Sony has staved off production of quality games so that early PS3 adopters are FORCED to buy Blu-Ray movies to justify spending $600 on the system AND to give them something to use the PS3 for.  Think about it.  How many actual games are out on the PS3 right now?  Maybe 12?  15?  How many Blu-Ray movies?  Close to 75.  I don't think that's a coincidence.

This isn't even going to scratch the surface of Sony's losses.  Think about it as a company they lost a total of 563 million dollars last quarter alone (1.9 billion of it from the gaming division).  Per year that's 2.25 billion dollars (7.6b for gaming).  They are cutting say 150 jobs or so.  Even if we assume they are each making 100k per year that only totals up to 15 million dollars less.

2,250,000,000 - 15,000,000 = 2,235,000,000

That bairly even scratches the surface of Sony's losses.  Face it folks Sony is in MAJOR trouble.

agreed I certainly dont want sony to get out of the gaming world but they have some lessons to learn from this. that being said...

right but here's the difference.

in 2005, ms's gaming and entertainment division lost a total of $3.25 billion. meaning it took 4 years to lose that much money.

in contrast, sony lost $1.91 in 6 months!!!! it took sony 6 months to piss away all the profits of the ps2 and and lose almost 2/3 of the amount of money it took ms 4 years to lose. or simply, sony lost 2/3 of what ms lost in 1/8 the time.

$3.25 billion loss

$1.9 billion loss

but they have stated that next year, for the first time ever, it will be profitable and be in the black, unlike sony's gaming division for the foreseeable future.

Robbie Bach said: "It's a business that will be profitable next year. We'll make money next year and that will be the first time, which is pretty exciting."

Wait.... uhhh... I'm not 100% sure about this, but didn't Microsoft originally lose MORE than 3.25billion dollars, but by 2005 make BACK some of that money... and if that is the case, wouldn't it be the same situation for Sony? Implying that they will (hopefully) be making back some of that money... you make it sound like they are bound to lose billions more.

I can't wait for the PS3 to prove people wrong. When production costs go down, the PS3 will go down to around $400 to $500, it will have games like MGS4, Heavenly Sword, GTA4, a and a lot more hits.

We're judging the system when it's at its newest, at its most expensive, and at its smallest library of games. We do not judge system success on all three of these disadvantageous factors.

By the time it gets it's cut, and starts selling the Wii and Xbox 360 will be so far gone, that it'll be a classic example of to little to late.
