Sony threatened to Blackball Kotaku if they proceeded to publish the rumour concerning Phil Harrison's keynote at GDC and the existance of 'Playstation Home'. Kotaku refused to bow to Sony's threats and have their content dictated to them and went ahead and printed the story.

The have now been asked to return their debug PS3s and had their invitation to Phil Harrisons Keynote and subsequent interview cancelled.

Wouldn't you if they were exposing your failing company that has to resort to criminality?

This isn't some little leaked screen of a game , this is considered tipping off the competition in a way. They were asked kindly , but Kotaku does their own thing unfortunately.

In my opinion, that's a pathetic move of Sony. They have all the right to report news without any consequences.

Makes me wonder why Sony is taking this like a smack to the face? Stuff like this always leaks. They know that. Maybe it's not true and Sony doesn't want their consumers expecting such thing?

... wow. I don't know what to say. After all the trouble Sony has gotten into with public relations recently I'd think that burning one of it's bridges would be the last thing for it to do. Apparently I think wrong.

It's not Kotaku's job to make sure Sony's news is released in the way Sony wants it. I think it is terrible that Sony feels it should be able to dictate to Blog sites what the can and can't print.

Kotaku is a good site and most of the time their info is true. If anything sony just proved this rumor to be true, and also they proved to be idiots why else will they want to pull of the rumor. Just my 2 cents.

How does this make sony look like "Jackasses" ?

Sony recives so much flak over ANY AND EVERYTHING they do, of course if a wild rumor pop's up they are gonna wanna squash it before they recive flak for somthing, that may or may not be the case.  Either way what sony did makes sense, if you ask me Kotaku = "Jackasses" because now they are basically ass'd out on anything sony, and they are gonna become a lemming and Sheep source only.   And they are gonna be the one's hurting over it, not Sony.

If the wiimote got leaked, that would be nintendo's problem. The leaker is in their right to publish what news they want. The only way nintendo could do something about it is if the leaker had signed and NDA before hand.

The smart thing Kotaku could have done was say, "Okay, we won't post the rumor, but we get first exclusive rights when you announce it -- that is, if it is true. Send over the NDA (non-disclosure-agreement)."

It was Kotaku who decided to go ahead and publish it when they knew what the consequences were. I don't feel sorry for them and I think they deserved it. Good riddance I say....they shouldn't have access to PS3 news anyway....their site is Xbox fanboy heaven.

A very foolish move by Sony.  Its goal here was clearly to control information for marketing reasons; but the people who would be exposed to this information with Kotaku as the source, are the same people who would certainly learn about the denial of Kotaku's access.  Instead of having to deal with marketing that got thwarted, Sony will now have to deal with marketing that's been turned inside-out; this just looks bad.

Who are the people making these decisions?  Are they as out-of-touch as they seem?  It's like they've got a boardroom full of Michael Jacksons or something.

Leaking information has always been a part of journalism. Remember Deepthroat? Yeah good thing that got leaked, but according to Sony Loving cows, leaking news is a bad bad thing. I just want to see who stands behind kotaku, and who gets threatened by Sony. Normally many journalistic enterprises will stick up for one another, but in this case Sony could break out it's "ban" stick and threaten just about anyone for supporting kotaku.

Orly? What if the leaker got into it and started making jokes about it like Nintendo is making a gimmick tv remote for their next console? If nintendo defends against the rumor they would be on their right to, and who's saying sony will sue kotaku? They asked to remove it and they didn't listen.

They may take action against the leaker all they want. But Kotaku is not the leaker. They're the reporter. There is a difference. And they have every right to do so.

in order for it to be a leak, it would have to come from INSIDE the company. Sony gave them news, then said oh wait, don't post it yet! That's too bad, they shouldn't have given them the story. Sony's fault, but if the world were run by the cows, Nixon would have never had to resigned, because they would have killed Woodward for breaking the story...

Okay, let's get something straight about Kotaku vs Sony -- especially their readership. Take this for example: Sony gives Kotaku a ONE-OF-A-KIND laser-etched PS3 to give away to one of their readers. Now, read the damn comments in that topic: Link That is the readership that Kotaku has, and who they aim their articles at. They never have had love for Sony. "...makes a great paperweight!" "@BBBoT: I think that a more important question is: "Is it powerful enough to allow for real time weapon switching?" "Hey as its the only way I'd ever own a **** 3 I'll enter!" "Man thats a fancy blue-ray player. I hear it might play games someday." "If I get it I'd use it to hold up my Wii Sensor bar under my TV " "It better cook a dozen hot dogs at once. It better." Yeah, Kotaku, Sony fair all the way.

How is it Kotaku's fault, that Sony can't keep a secret. Sony should be punishing the people in their own organization for spilling the beans, not Kotaku.

Kotaku was simply posting the news when they got it. Kotaku didn't sign any sort of NDA. Sony's own did and thats who should be taking all of the punishment

Sony: 'Please stop fueling rumours about us, we'll give you a kiss. :3' Kotaku: 'No.' Sony:'.... **** off.' Seems about right, Sony asked them politely first so I see no reason why I should be sympathetic.

How is it Kotaku's fault, that Sony can't keep a secret. Sony should be punishing the people in their own organization for spilling the beans, not Kotaku.

Kotaku was simply posting the news when they got it. Kotaku didn't sign any sort of NDA. Sony's own did and thats who should be taking all of the punishmentobi_kenobi24
it seem alot of sites had this info but they were the only one to put this out on the net

[QUOTE="FearlessSpirit"][QUOTE="tegovoltio"][QUOTE="cakeorrdeath"][QUOTE="Nike_Air"]This isn't some little leaked screen of a game , this is considered tipping off the competition in a way. They were asked kindly , but Kotaku does their own thing unfortunately.

It's not Kotaku's job to make sure Sony's news is released in the way Sony wants it. I think it is terrible that Sony feels it should be able to dictate to Blog sites what the can and can't print.

Imagine that the Wiimote would have been leaked before TGS, and nintendo takes action agants the leaker. Would Nintendo be evil?

They may take action against the leaker all they want. But Kotaku is not the leaker. They're the reporter. There is a difference. And they have every right to do so.

in order for it to be a leak, it would have to come from INSIDE the company. Sony gave them news, then said oh wait, don't post it yet! That's too bad, they shouldn't have given them the story. Sony's fault, but if the world were run by the cows, Nixon would have never had to resigned, because they would have killed Woodward for breaking the story...

The story did not come from Sony. It came from a tipster.

Brian Crecente's response.

"To get straight to your question. This did not involve an embargo. If you read the story, you can read right? We said it was a rumor from a single anonymous tipster. I have no clue why Sony overreacted like this."
