Sony has confirmed that it is buying back theNagasaki Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (NSM) Cell production facility from Toshiba, as rumored earlier this week. The plant was sold to Toshiba back in 2008 and then leased to NSM, a joint venture in Cell chip production between Toshiba, Sony and SCEI; once Sony has purchased the plant, the NSM partnership will also be terminated.

The sale is expected to be completed early in the fiscal year ending March 31 2012, after which it's unclear if Toshiba will continue to use the Cell chips in their high-end Qosmio notebooks. Sony uses the Cell technology in the PS3 console.

So we might be seeing the Cell in the PS4 afterall.

Good to hear, it wouldn't make sense not to use Cell for the PS4. The hurdles for developing for it are over so why not use it again? That goes double for Blu-ray.

I dun understand why the hate for the cell, if it's that good in the PS3 ( you can't deny that), imagine what itcan do if it's joined by a better GPU.

Anyway, we play games not the cell :P .

I think we went over this already.

But yeah...The Cell Processor is doing just as well as ever.

For some reason there seemed to be alot of misinformed people that thought the Cell was discontinued or something.

In the PS4, I expect them to use an advanced Cell derivative....maybe they'll call it the KELL or HELL or something.

The HELL PROCESSOR....lol

Toshiba's CELL chip doesn't include PowerPC component. With Intel Sandybridge's 256bit wide AVX SIMD or DX10/DX11 GpGPUs, it reduces the need for CELL.
