SONY Considering Release A More Powerful PS4 In The Future!

"That's according to Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Masayasu Ito, who was asked for his thoughts in a new interview about offering a new PS4 model with better performance sometime down the road."

"Speaking with Japanese gaming publication 4Gamer, as translated by DualShockers, Ito said because the PS4 uses X86 architecture (unlike the PlayStation 3's Cell processor), improvements to performance can be made over time. However, Ito stressed that Sony has no immediate plans to introduce a technically superior PS4 model; he also explained that the bigger question is if Sony would actually want to do this at all.

Offering a beefier PS4 model would conceivably split the PS4 audience, which doesn't sound like something Sony would want to do at this stage with the PS4 enjoying such strong sales and momentum. Whether or not Sony would have some solution to fracturing its audience remains to be seen. It's also important to note that Ito was speaking hypothetically after he was asked a direct question. Still, he said releasing a higher-power PS4 model alongside the existing one is an idea that "might be considered."

On second thought..... Look at the mobile and tablet markets. If game makers can get their games to work on a wide range of hardware configurations there, why not on consoles? There are multiple generations of iPads for example. From gen 3 on, they can all pretty much play the same games, they just run better on the newer models. And this opens up revenue opportunities for Sony. People spend HUNDREDS of dollars on new phones and tables every 2-3 years. It's possible Sony could get a good chunk of their fanbase to buy a "new gen" PS4 every couple of years without losing their existing user base.

Sony must want to alienate alot of gamers you think ppl would be pissed if Nintendo flat out released nx next year well this would top that because its definitely not going to last and ps5 has to come soon why the hell would anyone not be mad at Sony

Terrible idea. Either make a totally new console and call it the Playstation 5, or don't do it at all. Do not fracture your fanbase and make life more difficult for devs. Devs won't support the new hardware anyways since the majority of the market would still be on the weaker PS4 hardware.

If you want upgradeable hardware and no real "generations", get a PC. Do not bring the consoles into that mess.

What they should do and are most likely doing is to make the current PS4 is low cost as possible and increase their userbase even more.

I would gladly trade my launch Playstation 4 in for a newer, more powerful version. But, I'm not sure it would be economically viable for a company like Sony to go out of their way, especially with the success they're currently experiencing through their console division, and mass produce another expensive version of their current console.

It would be a PS5 with backwards compatibility. No company in their right mind would do that. Why spend money upgrading something without changing the name. You have to let people know it's better, it gains hype and promotes sells.

They should, though, fully support the PS4 for 4 more years, at most, and then release the PS5.

I think it would be just fine. Call it the PS4+.

Developers will still develop games using the original PS4 as target but the PS4+ can run the same game at a higher frame rate and/or higher fidelity graphics.

Yes they will eventually replace the PS4 with a stronger model, and it will be named PS5. No chance of doing a half upgrade, would split the user base, and unlike a handheld very few will fell a need to upgrade.

It seems like back it the Sega Genesis days when you needed the 64x adaptor for certain games.

Sony could have a higher power console that was a "Gold" version that could play games that required more power. I like this idea.

Upgrading console hardware over time isn't a new idea. Plenty of consoles went through hardware evolution in the '80s & '90s.

The NES, Mega Drive, SNES and N64 all evolved through expanded memory and enhancement chips on game cartridges (which were like an extension of the hardware). There were also plenty of add-ons, like the Famicom Disk System for the NES (successful in Japan), the PC Engine CD-ROM for the PC Engine (successful in Japan, but a flop in North America), the Sega CD for the Mega Drive (a moderate success), the Sega 32X for the Mega Drive (a flop), the RAM expansion for the Saturn (a success in Japan, but flop in the West), and the RAM expansion for the N64 (a success).

Consoles didn't become entirely static in hardware until optical discs completely replaced cartridges in the late '90s.

Sounds like he is saying that since PS4 is x86 based, gamers should have bought a good PC instead and they wouldn't have performance issues.

@BassMan: Wouldnt have to buy a new console so soon either. Would be funny if Nintendo pushes them to release one soon. Im sure they are already making plans and warming up the fans.
