It's pathetic, they had 80% of the market and lost almost all of it to a system with a quarter the power because they lacked foresight.

Yup, and it didn't help things that their initial marketing campign was trying show their product as some sort of super-computerthat could take over your entire life and Nintendo's was all about how much fun everyone could have together.
I bought the PS3 at $600 and I wouldn't mind a starting price of $600 for the new PS4 since the system was totally worth every penny.

Maybe in the long run it was worth it (not to me...) but on its initial release their was certainly alot of negative reactions to the $600 investment for a so called "gamechanging" machine with a horrible launch line up and terrible over-complicated development kits that took years for developers to really learn how to use, further detrimenting the already bad line up of games. So...
And they gained it back by launching the slim, really these sony is doomed threads are gettinng really old. Get some new material please! And MS took a huge beating from the RROD fiasco, they have all had some losses and gains this gen. But they have all done well and made a profit, even Sony.
For $700CAD it made a great BD player and game console, at a time when most BD players cost $1000+.
I think purchasing it at launch was probably a mistake in my case.
From a gamer's perspective the system was lacking in games for a quite some time, and I could have just waited for a price drop + some games.
From an A/V enthusiast's perspective, I regret not saving for an Oppo.
The PS3 had barely any games at launch and a good while after that. I remember buying it near launch and all there was Resistance Fall of Man and Genji Days of Blade. It was a frikkin disaster of a launch.I love games, but no system is worth that. todd2r

The PS3 had barely any games at launch and a good while after that. I remember buying it near launch and all there was Resistance Fall of Man and Genji Days of Blade. It was a frikkin disaster of a launch. Actually, that was a forum myth created by lemmings, and then i guess some misinformed people on the internet picked it up and ran with it. Till' this day it remains one of the biggest forum myths ever. The actualy reality, is that the PS3 launched with a GREAT title in Resistance. A much greater title then anything the 360 launched with! And literally NOT more then half a year later from the PS3's launch( in late 2006 ) we started getting great games like WarHawk, Heavenly Sword, MotorStorm, Ratchet and Clank, and the very first entry into the magnificent and epicly insane epic Uncharted series! Keep in mind that ALL of the aforementioned games were released from 2007 to 2008. AND YET interestingly enough, it took the 360 the same amount of time, if not longer, after its intial launch, to get its FIRST core exclusive in Gears. Not only did we get the much superior Uncharted earlier after our launch, but we also got WarHawk, Ratchet and Clank, and Heavenly Sword! A great amount of exclusives and diversity to have within the first year of launch, wouldn't you say so, as an objective gamer? It was true, that multi plats at this time were lacking and or either hadn't been released yet on the PS3! BUT as for as exclusives go, the PS3 came out swinging out of the gate hard and fast , and has yet to let up. Year after year since 2007, the PS3 has been destroying the 360 in exclusives(in quantity and in quality) Its a shame the PS3 doesn't sell like it should, because tick for tack, its very arguably one of the greatest consoles of all time. But then again, Justin Beeber /Lada Gaga are the most selling and most popular artists in America. So in other words, America=the lulz. Anyway, as you can see, the PS3 FACTUALLY did have games. I was an owner of a fat PS3 at launch, and believe me, i always had good games to play! Yet some lemmings try to tell me that I didn't have any games to play. Amazing isn't it?[QUOTE="todd2r"]

Are you dense or something? This isn't a "sony is doomed" thread. TC said they lost this gen because of the initial $600 price. If you read some of the responses then TC has a point. Sony was #1 biggest market share by FAR and now look. They're in last and lost the most market share of any console. He's not saying Sony is doomed he's just stating the obvious which you seem to miss as usual. And they gained it back by launching the slim, really these sony is doomed threads are gettinng really old. Get some new material please! And MS took a huge beating from the RROD fiasco, they have all had some losses and gains this gen. But they have all done well and made a profit, even Sony.

Thanks, I guess! But, you have to understand, that many many and many people did. You know, you are not the only person in the world, and the world doesn't revolve around you or lemmings in denial! You cant deny those titles no matter how hard you try, And the fact that there were that many good exclusives ,available within a short amount of time after launch - up until the whole year, dispels that dumb forum myth. Would you agree? No prizes for pointing out that most people won't feel the same way. The PS3 launched late 2006. It launched with Resistance, and...? Gengi? Ridge Racer? Uncharted 1 came out December 2007, almost 12 months after launch. Ratchet and Clank came out October 2007. Warhawk came out August 2007. Heavenly Sword came out September, and TBH wasn't all that great. Which means the PS3's first decent game was Motorstorm in March. Couple that with a $600 price tag, and you have what amounts to a glacial launch. Not a single AAAE in the first 12 months, and the console was drastically more expensive. The 360 came out November 2005. At launch, it had Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero (an AAAE) and Project Gotham Racing 3, which was stronger than the PS3's launch offerings.. By January 2007, it had Dead or Alive 4, by March, it had it's second AAAE (Far Cry Instincts), by August it had Dead Rising, by September, it had Saint's Row, by November, it had it's third AAAE, Gears of War.

I wasn't even talking to you! But lol no just no! I don't care about scores, I care about playing games, and every launch or launch window title, from after launch - up until the end of that year, were good games that I had lots of fun with! Heavenly Sword WAS a good game(better then Dead or Alive 4 at least, which I also had) p.s Dead Rising later released on the PS3 also, so that kind of defeats your point! Oh and by the way , you do know that the very first entry into the magnificent and epic Uncharted series was released that year? Which was a very good game! And you are also forgetting Liar! I LOVE how the PS3 had more games then you could remember. I actually bought Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo as launch titles for my 360, and I'll tell you what, its scores were not deserved IMO. I had way more fun with, and was far more impressed by, Resistance- as far as launch titles go. And Gengi was not that bad either! And going back to Liar, it was -minus the motion controls- a decent game too! And if you could get past the frustration of motion controls, then the game could be fun and unique. Before i go off topic, Ratchet and Clank , all though not an immediate launch title, DESTROYED Kameo IMO( although I actually did enjoy Kameo some what) Ok so now to veer off topic lol, I remember when M$ promised us true next gen graphics, and yet most of its launch games looked like xbox 1.5 games to me. I was disappointed! And only PGR4 seemeed to have great graphics to me, but I never had been and still have never been that into serious racers! Resistance had 60 players online though, and so it felt like something next gen to me in that regard. Plus the detail at which there were so many amounts of things happening on screen at once, and coupled with the insanely good enemy A.I, all made it feel like an early next gen title to me. But when Uncharted 1 came along, it totally blew me away, and it was at the pount in time, that true next gen graphics finally ushered in to the seventh generation of consoles for me. Seeing Drakes clothes get wet, was something that impressed me to no end lol. And I must have spent a good several minutes or so just rollng in the water, and getting wet lol...and then seeing his clothes begin to dry off, it was just as impressive. But beyond the insanely stunning graphics(for its time) it was a very good time to boot! MotorStorm gave me that similar feeling also! The graphics were insane! The destructability of the cars, and mud physics were unlike anything we had ever seen before on a console also. Damn, just remembering the good old days, Motorstorm / WarHawk / Uncharted 1 / Ratchet and Clank were all such fun games! Its amazing, how much better things have gotten since then, and how much better games are (for the PS3) Anyway, THE BOTTOM LINE, is that the PS3 had more exclusives back then, then the 360 has exclusives now. And the fact is, That the PS3 did have games for PS3 owners of different tastes to play and enjoy! The forum myth that the PS3 had NO games, was and still is one of the biggest forum myths in existence. And I've already provided more then enough examples to hopefully dispel, kill, and then burry that ridiculous forum myth many feet below the ground, and deep into the core of the Earth's equator. In fact, and I don't care about the big hoopla over price, I enjoyed the PS3 durring launch! I enjoyed it after launch, and I'm still enjoying it now, and will continue to enjoy it in the future. Pound for Pound, game for game, and feature for feature, the PS3 is very arguable the greatest gaming console of all time. Regardless of sales
this pretty much sums it up right here dude :lol:babycakinlol yep, nice pic! Im proud to say it mooooo lol! Can I get a mooo from you too? No but I'm different from a hard core lemming in that I can actually be reasonable, and that most of the time i post with logic! You agree, don't you?
I still dont understand the problem here. Is this another hate thread. 360 wasnt cheap either.
I bought brand new Xbox 360 at launch for $500. The 360 was no better. Then they started bringing out HD DVD, Wi Fi add ons, battery packs & we quickly found out that 50% of the systems were dying ( RROD )
Sonys PS3 only cost $100 more so what's the big deal. It also had wifi & blueray, & free online. And after 6 years of being out they have delivered gamers the best & most high quality exclusives, free online, & included all the potential add ons in the system ( Blue ray, battery packs, wi FI ) My investment in the Ps3 was a much better one than 360
What truly cost Sony this generation was simply the fact the 360 got a head start. It had nothing to do with price. In my eyes Sony won this generation, but in terms of sales they lost.

You forgot the biggest 360 launch title...Cod 2. Restistance is garbage in comparison.
[QUOTE="Danm_999"][QUOTE="DrakesHaloGears"] haha read my post above yours! Just to give you a quick and simple break down, In the year 2007 alone(not more then half year after its launch in late 2006) there were good titles like WarHawk, Heavenly Sword, MotorStorm, Ratchet and Clank, and Uncharted released. It took the 360 just as long, if not longer after its intial launch to get its first core exclusive in Gears. And Gears was all that came in the year 2006! The truth is that the PS3 had many more exclusive games back then, then the 360 has exclusive games now! LMAO. You get the jest of it, don't you? By the way, Manny Pacman is my all time favorite! Love that dude! He's a monster, and.definitely one of the all time greatesr offensive talents that boxing HAS EVER SEEN in its history. I also had Call of Duty as a launch title for the 360. It was a good, but i liked Resistance a little more. Also, Call of Duty then, wasn't the Juggernaut back then, that it is now currently!

Resitance was a great launch title, and at the time it was released, it was something fresh! Its sad how criminally under rated Resistance 1 is by people like you, who've probably never even played the game or have ever even given it a chance! I personally liked Resistance more then Call of Duty 3( Don't forget that PS3 later saw a release as well) So that defeats your point too.
actually that was just one of the reasons I would believe it was a combination of price, Arrogance displayed on a constant basis to gamers, outright lies to gamers, and lack of games for the first 2 years or so.
Just imagine how bad of a position Sony would be in and the ps3 would be in if Microsoft hadn't been stupid and there had never been an rrod.
why is everyone complaining about the price...
so many people go buy iphones, ipads and say it doesnt cost so much. bloody hell an overpriced tablet and a phone when there are better tablets and phones on the market and people go but them anyway... but when it comes to ps3, oh NOOOO. 600 dollars is way to expensive... next day goes buys iphone...come on

I played resistance 1 it sucked it sucked major balls from a story standpoint, gameplay standpoint and graphics standpoint and I only need one proof go boot the game up find a bush get into bush and OH MY GOD its just 2 bush textures set in a + with a rotating script....thats the same programming we had in mario freaking 64.... Resistance 2 was a superior experience its gameplay was superior it got rid of nearly every old fps mechanic and actually joine this century, its story was far better with an actual speaking main character, and its coop was freaking amazing Resistance 2 is still one of my favorite games this generation.

I wasn't even talking to you! DrakesHaloGears
Yeah, sometimes on the forums people you weren't directly talking to post when you say outrageous things.
But lol no just no! I don't care about scores, I care about playing games, and every launch or launch window title, from after launch - up until the end of that year, were good games that I had lots of fun with!DrakesHaloGears
So then, it's your subjective opinion? The reason we use GameSpot or at least GameRanking scores, is because otherwise I can just say Viva Pinata is worth every single PS3 exclusive and we'd be at an impasse.
p.s Dead Rising later released on the PS3 also, so that kind of defeats your point! DrakesHaloGears
No, Dead Rising was only ever on the 360, Dead Rising 2 was released multiplatform.
But even if it was on the PS3 as well, my comparison of the first years of the respective consoles has nothing to do with what happened later.
Oh and by the way , you do know that the very first entry into the magnificent and epic Uncharted series was released that year? DrakesHaloGears
Yes I did. That's why I mentioned it. You can read it in my analysis and everything.
Which was a very good game! And you are also forgetting Liar! DrakesHaloGears
I wish I could forget Lair. See, I only really talked about games that scored 8 or above, and not every exclusive the system had, otherwise there'd be lots of other games.
I LOVE how the PS3 had more games then you could remember. DrakesHaloGears
Of course it did, I'm not a robot. All I did was go through the list of exclusive games that the 360 and PS3 had in their respective first years and that scored over 8.0. The 360 came out quite ahead.
Subjective opinion of how PS3 games should be considered despite lower critical acclaim, and 360 games should be ignored despite higher critical acclaim DrakesHaloGears
See my second point.
Anyway, THE BOTTOM LINE, is that the PS3 had more exclusives back then, then the 360 has exclusives now. And the fact is, That the PS3 did have games for PS3 owners of different tastes to play and enjoy! The forum myth that the PS3 had NO games, was and still is one of the biggest forum myths in existence. DrakesHaloGears
No, the perception was it had no games that made the system a must have. And that was a good point, since in its first 12 months it had no AAAE and was the second most expensive console in history.
And I've already provided more then enough examples to hopefully dispel, kill, and then burry that ridiculous forum myth 100 feet below the ground, and into the Earth's equator. DrakesHaloGears
The Earth's equator is on the surface champ.
In fact, and I don't care about the big hoopla over price, I enjoyed the PS3 durring launch! I enjoyed it after launch, and I'm still enjoying it now, and will continue to enjoy it in the future. Pound for Pound, game for game, and feature for feature, the PS3 is very arguable one of the greatest consoles of all time.DrakesHaloGears
To quote the Big Lebowski, "that's like your opinion man", and honestly, you haven't backed it up very well beyond "I like system A's games, but not system B's, therefore system A is better".
yes for the sales they have it might.
But if were talking bout sony as a whole company its actually a pretty minor thing considering they reversed their fortunes somewhat with SCE.
LOL what is it with all these damn lemming troll accounts that keep responding to all my posts?! DrakesHaloGears
I'm not a Lemming nor a troll. I just disagree with you.
Both of you moronsDrakesHaloGearsA person who thought the equator was 100 miles below ground might want to go easy with the "m" word.

Man I wouldn't even buy an iphone or tablet at 600 dollars lol 200-300 is suffice
Consumers don't like high prices. It's pretty simple economics. There are ways that you can mitigate this feeling, but Sony didn't really do this very well. Apple does it very well.why is everyone complaining about the price...

there was 3 reasons
1 PRICE: Everyone knows this is the biggest reason it killed it from the word $600
2 first party games: Yes they have a good first party everyone that ain't looking with rose tinted fanboy glasses know this. But they didn't do as great as the ps2 first party games n sony lives or dies on there first party games being the big selling point
3 Marketing: They are terrible at it. What happened to the Sony they use to be good at it now they terrible.
PRICE of Hardware N Marketing is what they need to improve on the most N they will be fine
