wow @ people acting like PS1 and 2 werent 2 of the greatest consoles in existence, you guys need to stop acting like lame fanboys, microsoft steals peoples money way more then sony, but i respect microsoft because without it i'd be typing in commands trying to get linux to work, i guarentee if ps3 wasnt doing this bad nobody would be saying a bad thing about sony, and even if its that "we hate whoevers on top" thing, microsoft has way more money then sony.
Its like people who hate on the yankees, yea NOW the yankees buy a lot of their players, but the reason they have the money to buy their players is because they actually had homegrown yankees to supply them with all the championships, people forget that sony wasnt on top all the time and they became the industry they became because they're a really really good company.

Wow and you're acting like Sony actually did something. They created a console and THIRD party developers made it what it used to be. Sony's hardware was far from the best. I think YOU'RE the fanboy here.
Like most people have already said....Sony just followed in the footsteps of others.
the possibility of good games coming out in the somewhat near future is a pretty bad reason to buy a game system.
because you owe the company a debt of gratitude for quality products in the past is even worse!
Being able to keep a large amount of paper from being blown away by wind, or holding open a significantly heavy door are both better reasons to buy anything, letalone videogame console that costs several hundred dollars.
[QUOTE="bezaire2005"][QUOTE="Ontain"][QUOTE="bezaire2005"][QUOTE="Ontain"][QUOTE="bezaire2005"]...most current games would be IMPOSSIBLE without dual analog...that's pretty major if you ask me.
kingtito
most current gamers would be impossible without more than 2 or 4 buttons but we don't go crazy over adding extra buttons do we?
We don't..but I guess we should. Personally i really don't go "crazy" over anything gaming related, but that's just me. but with what you said, the evoultion of the controller was absolutly necessary.
it was necessary but the key points were the addition of something new. not the mere addition of and extra.
We were talking about what specific companies have broughten to gaming. I don't see how being the first to have dual analog sticks that give rise to pretty much every game we play today is not a strong contribution to gaming. I'm not saying Sony invented something completly new, I'm not saying they invented something that was completly out of nowhere and unimaginable. All I'm saying is that it was a contribution that shaped today's gaming.
Maybe you disagree, and that's fine. But personally I consider the integration of any component that is widely used today to be significant.
You're giving Sony wayyyy to much credit. All they did was follow in Atari and Nintendos footsteps. They came out with 2 consoles that happened to be the most popular at that time. They didn't re-invent gaming nor did they revolutionize it. Atari brought gaming to the main stream with Nintendo following right after. Most of probably don't remember Atari since I'm sure you weren't born then.
If you want to thank anyone thank Atari and Nintendo. They were household names loooong before Playstation ever was.
I'm not thanking Sony for being a household name...I never mentioned that once in any of my posts IN FACT I critisized the people who did say it and I said that Nintendo deserves that title. So I don't see how I am giving Sony to much credit.
All I said was simple, and it's remarkable that people don't seem to understand: they were the first to include dual analog, which a very important feature in today's gaming, especially shooters. That's really all I'm saying. So why you are trying to make more out of this is beyond me. It has absolutly nothing to do with Atari and Nintendo and behing household names...and has everything to do with them introducing a particular style of controller that has become essential to a large part of console gaming.
Why do people keep responding to what I say like I am trying to rewrite history and give all the respect to Sony? I don't even like Sony. I'm just saying what they did.
I don't respect a company that packs useless features into their console. Sony has to earn my money and respect.
Maybe next gen they will get their heads out of their rear ends and realise what gamers want.
sony did nothing for the gaming industry nintendo did alot more.pop1233Sony took gaming out of the kids corner, they took it out of the bedroom with a small tv and brought it into the living room. They made gaming appeal to the club scene (wipeout for example), they made it hot.
That's always the case, it's pure marketing. Knowing what your target audience wants and delivering it. What do you think Nintendo is doing at the moment? the time is right to dive into the mass market with non-hardcore games.Sony hasn't really done anything.
The success of the Playstation brand was mostly a case of "in the right place, at the right time".
joeblak
first to use the actual cd format yes i now turbo cd ect. but it was not the same cd's they use for music cd. they were they first to have m rating games. they were they first to have portible memory cards so you can play your game on your friends system. they were the first to have 8 buttons on a controler.
GARRYTH
Mortal Kombat came out in 1992 and would have been rated M if the ESRB was standard during that time, the PS1 came out in 1994.
As for 8 button controller well I'll let dates and a picture do the talking
Sega Saturn official release date: Novemember 22, 1994
Sony Playstation official release date: December 1994
So Sega still beat out playstation, there were other consoles that released before Playstation that had more then 8 buttons but since we are talking about 8 buttons I'd just leave it at that.
sony did nothing for the gaming industry nintendo did alot more.pop1233
Don't forget Sega...
...but yeah, Nintendo did a lot more...and they are still going strong.
i have great respect for sony of the PS1 era. if they didnt take the risk they took then this industry would probably be in bad shape. nintendo were losing there senses and sega were, well what were sega doing? sony gave devs a very nice platform to try new things with there games, with far nicer licencing contracts and all that jazz. the PS1 was also sonys finest console. difficult to develop for but not unreasonably so and devs really managed to surprise with what they did with the resources sometimes (always a mark of a great console imho...though credit to the devs too of course). they definately did add to the industry with PS1 and gave it a great nudge.
unfortunately there now just a shadow of there former selves imho. i dont know if its internal politics in the company or other divisions trying to use the games division to bolster there own tech, but something has gone horribly wrong at sony HQ. PS2 was the warning sighns but the PS3....i really dont know what they were thinking. the PS3 is a crackin multimedia device....but as a games console there are a few design decisions in there that boggle the mind to be honest. it really does give the impression that its multimedia and blu-ray first, promoting the cell so it has a future outside the PS3 second....and games third. the only thing positive that i can think of (and it is a big positive i ill add) is that there first party is improving alot....SOTC and GOW are must haves.
imho sonys game division needs to stand back and take a good long hard look at itself.....there going in the wrong direction. if PS3 wakes them up to this then any battering it takes will be worth it. i want the old sony back for the PS4.
I have been gaming for a long time, Their were other consoles before PS1, with better games IMO. Telling people to "give respcet" to sony, is like telling them to thank the IRS........Sony should be giving it's customers respect by not making rediculous claims like "Next gen starts when we say." To bad next gen started and they are still at the gate while being dusted by 360 and Wii.
[QUOTE="Idontremember"]Respect to Sony.... Wait, was is the companywith that mighty console at E3 2005?afmsquid
Yes, the same console that people were supposed to work overtime, or get second jobs for.
OK, sucks that I only have one HDTV. I cant play with 2 screensrunning at1080p at 120fps in 4D.
I'll freely admit the inclusion of dual shock was a step forward for gaming. But beyond that they haven't done anything except provide a platform that allowed GREAT GAMES to push gaming forwards. None of the gaming legends have come from Sony. All the legends are either from Nintendo or 3rd parties.
Sony has done ONE thing that has pushed gaming forwards, other than that, they have ripped ideas and tech off from BETTER companies and made a profit.
