Wha? I don't even...
None are doomed. They're all making money. Sony may be losing money in their electronics division, as far as tvs, stereo, home theates, etc., but I believe their gaming division is doing fine. If Microsoft happened to be the only one in the console hardware market we as gamers would be doomed. Nothing against Microsoft, but if any of these three were left to be the only one in that market we all would suffer.
Oh come on now lets not start acting like Nintendo is anywhere near as bad of financial troubles as Sony.
Sony Corp (that's their entire business all divisions combined) is posting a 3.2 billion loss in 2011.None are doomed. They're all making money. In 10 years Sony Corp has lost 82% of its entire net worth. Sep 2001 - $100 Billion, December 2011 - $18 Billion.

I can see Sony (in a couple of years, if they can't turn the company around as a whole) consolodating their different divisions and liquidating many that are not turning a profit. Their gaming division would probably be among those that are kept around.

Is their gaming division to blame for their huge losses? I don't think so, even with the Vita it's too soon to tell.hummer700Cows think just because the PS3 made some pocket change in the last couple years that somehow makes up for the near 5 billion in losses the PS3 encurred.

Overall down about 4.75 billion
Understand now?
Sony is not the developer of Playstation.
SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment of America) is.
They're doing great.
The parent company, not so much.
I think they will have to sell off their TV division.
Sony isn't doomed, because huge corporations like Sony don't just magically get mismanaged directly into the dirt. At some point, an intelligent businessman will take the reigns, turn it around and make a ton of cash. They'll need to cut off some excess fat (i.e., worthless divisions) but Sony will make it through their current problems.
The same isn't so true for Nintendo if, in theory, they were in a similar situation. They rely solely on their games, which means that console generation transition periods are really tough for the Big N. They'll be fine though.

That's not how business works. It doesn't matter if you lost a trillion dollars yesterday, if you made $20 in profit today and you are expecting to make another $20 tomorrow, that's all people care about. Likewise, it doesn't matter if you made a trillion dollars yesterday. If you lose $20 today, and you don't expect to stop losing money any time soon, investors will flip a **** on you. Mostly wishful thinking on your part.
PS3 made back initial investment by 2008.
They're the top selling console worldwide since around 2010.
Perhaps your confusion stems from the fact that Microsoft has lost $6billion in the console business since 2001.
That's why they're forced to use a schitty video card in their next one.
(And I still think they won't have a console, it will be a tablet type thing.)

The 360 lost billions of dollars off the RROD scandal. Both companies are making good money off their respective systems for the past few years.
Calling the Vita a failure is a bit premature. Remember what happened when everyone said the 3ds was a failure?

He's telling you how business works. Which is exactly what he said. :|
And from the perspective of someone who manages, he's right. Losses in the past don't matter if you are profiting now. Likewise, every quarter/FY is looked at on it's own merits as opposed to being seen as a large chunk including all recent quarters/FY's. Shareholders only care about increased share value today over yesterday, or even better, planned increases in the near future.
By these rules, the huge money the gaming division lost at the beginning of the console generation doesn't matter.
Then again, I don't really claim to have knowledge of Sony's current financial state, so I won't comment on that because I can't do so accurately.

How business works? So losing billions of dollars of dollars and 85% of your marketshare in a generation is good business?
Sony's business model is to lose money on hardware and recoup it on software years into the generation as hardware costs come down. Only this generation they never even came close to recouping their losses and lost most of their marketshare. Complete failure.

That is not true. The $5 billion that the PS3 lost does not just magically go away. The PS3 has made money since 2010 but not near enough to erase all that it has lost. There is not one thing Sony stock holders are happy about because they have lost so much money because of how much Sony stocks have dropped.
