March 16 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp. is under pressure from video-game publishers to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 console or risk seeing more development funds shift to Nintendo Co.'s Wii.

Sony, which has resisted calls for lower prices, is likely to shave $50 to $100 off the PS3 this month or next, said Mike Hickey, an analyst with Janco Partners Inc. in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Starting at $399.99, the PS3 is $200 more than the lowest-priced Xbox 360 from Microsoft Corp. and $150 more than the market-leading Wii.

Three years into the latest generation of game consoles, Sony is stuck in third place, data from the manufacturers show. The Tokyo-based company, once the dominant player, has half the worldwide users of Wii, even though the PS3 has earned praise for its processing power, graphics and Blu-ray movie player. U.S. sales of the PS3 have declined for three straight months.

"If they can't meaningfully increase their install base, then you will likely see a capital reallocation," Hickey said.

In 2008, Activision Blizzard Inc., the world's largest game company, generated 32 percent of its console revenue from Wii titles. That compared with 19 percent for PS3, according to Activision.

Electronic Arts Inc. is releasing some titles solely for Wii as part of a push to stem two years of losses, and showcased games for the Nintendo player at a company event last week.

"You can't ignore the guy who has half the market," said Peter Moore, head of sports games at Redwood City, California- based Electronic Arts, maker of the "Madden NFL" series.

'A Ways to Go'

"Sony obviously still has a ways to go with their pricing," Moore, a former executive in Microsoft's Xbox division, said in an interview. Electronic Arts is committed to the PS3 and expects a cut eventually, he said. PS3 games increased to 27 percent of the company's console sales last quarter, bolstered by a popular soccer title.

Sony has no immediate plan to reduce prices, said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America in Foster City, California.

"Everybody in the development community would love for the PS3 to be free, so they could just sell razor blades," Dille said in an interview. Sony is concerned with profitability, as well as the installed base, he said.

Sony, the world's second-largest consumer-electronics maker, is in the middle of a corporate overhaul, cutting 16,000 jobs and closing factories. Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer took over the main electronics business last month and named Kazuo Hirai, who leads the game unit, to head a new division combining Vaio computers, the Walkman and the PlayStation.

Exclusive Games

Sony is benefiting from exclusive titles for PS3, including the recently released "Killzone 2," and non-gaming deals like the one announced March 10 to deliver movies and television shows for NBC Universal over the PlayStation 3, Dille said.

Earlier this month, PS3 weekly sales in Japan topped Wii and Xbox ahead of the release of Capcom Co.'s latest "Resident Evil" installment, the Web sites GameSpot and IGN Entertainment reported, citing researcher Media Create.

Not everyone predicts a big shift in spending, because PS3 and Xbox 360 share many titles and costs. Game companies who fail to commit enough money to PS3 risk losing business, said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games Inc., the Cary, North Carolina-based maker of "Gears of War."

"You make very good money on PlayStation 3 if you develop a good game," Rein said in an interview. "You can very easily take that game to Xbox 360 or PC."

Seventh Generation

Sony climbed 1.1 percent to close at 1,913 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It has lost 54 percent in the past year.

The seventh generation of game systems began hitting stores in November 2005 with Microsoft's Xbox 360. Sony and Kyoto-based Nintendo followed a year later. At the end of December, Sony had sold 21 million PS3s worldwide, compared with Nintendo's almost 45 million Wii players and Microsoft's 28 million-plus Xbox 360s, according to the companies.

PS3 sales in the next 12 months are likely to total 14 million, compared with 28 million Wiis and 9.7 million Xbox 360s, according to the Daiwa Institute of Research, a Tokyo-based researcher and consultant.

Price cuts have an immediate impact.

Sony reduced the PS3 price from $499.99 in October 2007 and sales more than doubled in the next month. In September, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft released its lowest-priced Xbox 360, at $199.99. The company almost doubled Sony's U.S. shipments from October to January after trailing PS3 in the prior three months, NPD data show.

Two Directions

"Anytime a console manufacturer reduces the price, software publishers benefit," Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer of Ubisoft Entertainment SA, Europe's largest video-game maker, said in an e-mail.

Game makers now focus development in two directions: one for the top-selling Wii and the other for Xbox 360, PS3 and personal computers.

Titles for Microsoft and Sony are typically more expensive to produce. Sony posts a loss on each console it makes at the current price, according to researcher iSuppli Corp.

"The publishers need the PS3 install base to grow in order for most of these games to be profitable," said Evan Wilson, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities in Portland, Oregon. "It's an easy equation for them, but it's very different from the one that Sony has to take on."Bloomberg

Do you guys think Sony will drop the price on their PS3? Or will they stay the course so as not to lose as much money?

Ultimately it' s up to SONY to run SONY.

It would be nice if they dropped the price, but SONY has to decide if it's the right time, wait till E3, or just hold out since it's not affordable for them.

I remember the Pubs giving Sony problems last gen too with the PS2 when it was $299 for quite some time.

We'll just have to wait!lol.

Preferably I would want them to do what's best for them and not the devs. However, by July, I expect the price to be down.

I seriously doubt we will see a $100 price cut anytime soon. I would bet on a gimped unit for $50 less though. The 80GB is great but not worth it. Most people see the 60GB 360 bundle with 2 games included for $100 less and they tend to buy that. And there is even a $400 RE5 bundle to compete with. Sony should have kept the MGS4 bundle they had out. That one sold out at $500 but they discontinued it. I don't know why the "biggest gaming company" can't seem to take the right steps to insure a victory in the console wars. They smoked everyone the last 2 gens. Now they think they can just release the PS3 at any price and people will just buy it. Sorry to disappoint Sony.

The problem with that is that if Sony doesn't do what devs want, they have other choices and can spend development resources on other systems. This will hurt Sony a lot more in the long run since they make a lot of their profits through licensing fees.

That's a decision Sony needs to make, not game devs. The PS3 whilst being in last place has some fairly solid sales behind it, and with some great exclusives announced, I wouldn't be surprised to see an upturn in future sales. Sony at the end of the day needs to make money off the console, if they cut it $50-$100 then they are going to pay even more out of pocket per console. I wouldn't be surprised if they were pressured, but at the cost of components such as Blu-Ray drives, it may be impractical for them to do so.

Half of you guys don't realize that Sony would lose more money cutting the price right now then they would leaving it where it is. That's how it is until the cost to make a PS3 lowers. The price will come down this year but I doubt it'll be before the holiday season.

Making money is what's best for them... however, if the devs switch to the other consoles, the PS3 would be doomed and that'd be bad news for Sony... REALLY bad news.

True, however Sony did this in the beginning, they sold at a loss knowing that it would increase sales over time. In the long run they new production costs would come down, and over time they would make the money back. However with the 360 and Wii using a DVD drive, which is ridiculously cheap to manufacture nowadays, it's difficult to remain competitive against Microsoft and Nintendo price wise.

I got slated for saying that there would be no way they'd drop it in March a while back. It does need to come down, but I just don't think Sony can do it at the minute. They'll probably do it to co-incide with the release of a big title.

That is a funny threat.......drop the price of your hardware or we'll take our non-existant exclusives to the Wii? Oh rely........ Maybe I missed something but nearly all 3rd party developers are multiplat with PS3/X360 basically considered the "HD consoles". The Wii is the other choice. You are telling me these morons would not only give up the PS3 user base but also the X360 one? Probably be gettin' cut soon. It hasnt had a cut since what? November 2007? Crazyness. Here's hoping they get the price down soon. That's the biggest thing hurting the PS3 at the moment.

There is nothing bigger (IMO) than KZ2 this year until the 4th qtr......if they were going to do it, it should have been at the beginning of this month with that title. The fact they didn't do it means they are going to wait it out at least until summer.

What support are they going to lose to the Wii exactly? Losing support means X360 loses support which I do NOT see happening anytime soon.

Exactly, at the end of the day you gotta wonder if the devs have the balls to do this? I say some do, but not all are gonna do it. I think Sony will announce the cut when it's right, for either them, or the business they lose if they don't

The way I see it is:

Sony can keep the price and hope people will buy their console for their 1st party exclusives (ala Nintendo's way of doing things) until they can price cut. They sell less but are able to recoup losses with sales of exclusives.

OR

Sony can price cut down and risk taking even bigger losses as they are probably breaking even around now. They take heavy losses this gen but hopefully will recoup losses from sale of games due to more people having the console.

Tough choice Sony tough choice...

The problem is that costs of MS/PS3 games are a lot higher than costs for the Wii. Even companies that have primarily been making money off their 360 games, for example, EA, have lost money. Combining the so called "HD consoles" has not resulted in too many companies actually making profits from their sales. So trying to use this excuse really doesn't help your case since the numbers are proving you wrong. It makes sense to make more games for the Wii, but we'll see if game devs are smart enough to do that or not.

The PS3 really does need a price drop very soon if Sony want to see some more robust sales. I know a number of people who are holding out for a price drop before they buy a PS3 since they just can't afford it.

Profitability > Console Wars Pissing Contest

If 3rd parties want to work on a system that sells, then they can start working on Wii. Threatening to reallocate development resources to the industry leader (my God, just saying that makes me ashamed at the state of the industry) because they console they want to work on is trying its best to stay afloat is not the way to do things.

Threatening to reallocate development resources to the industry leader (my God, just saying that makes me ashamed at the state of the industry) because they console they want to work on is trying its best to stay afloat is not the way to do things.

Dingerious
I have to agree. 3rd parties should allocate more resources to the industry leader, and the fact that they haven't done that really does show how badly managed they are. Instead of going to where they can earn the most money, they implore for Sony to save them. They need to cut their fanboyism off and just start putting resources to where they can start earning money. Too many devs have failed already and it makes no sense to continue down this road if it leads to unprofitably.

I don't think Sony will lower the price till they either break even or make money by doing it.

All this price cut talk is what made me decide not to get a PS3 until mid next month. I was going to get it like 2 weeks ago until I started hearing these price cut rumors. I have no problem waiting a bit long to save some money.

Preferably I would want them to do what's best for them and not the devs. However, by July, I expect the price to be down.

Sony can lower to price or face elimination from the lack of future exclusives or even games in general.

We all know it'll be inevitable. The only question that remains is WHEN.

They should cut the price, But i think SONY knows there not gonna catch up to the 360 anytime soon,so They'll would rather ride the 400 pricetag as long as they can without losing money and cut the price when they start making a profit or stop losing money either way.

I want a price drop too but not if its going to hurt the company. I care more about the state of the companiy and its employees than saving $100 on a system I can already afford.

It really comes down to the fact, will Sony break a few eggs to make an omlet.
