Okay, so this is a question meant mostly for PlayStation fans, although others are free to go ahead and answer it as well. But for those who identify themselves as PlayStation fans first and foremost (this does not mean you don't like Xbox, PC, or Nintendo- you can, but your platform of first preference is PlayStation, that's all), what modern Nintendo device is your favorite?

What do I mean by modern Nintendo device? Well, I simply mean post GCN era. So, out of the Wii, DS, Wii U, and 3DS, which Nintendo system do you prefer the most? And why?

My guess is below, spoilered:

I would say it comes down to being between DS and 3DS- both systems have vast and varied libraries that either supplement or complement the PlayStation libraries very well. Although I have a feeling that the majority answer will be DS, logic dictates it should be 3DS, simply because it is closest to PlayStation platforms in 'spirit'- its library has a lot of overlap with the average PlayStation library (Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, Tales of, Tekken, Street Fighter, BlazBlue, Dead or Alive, Metal Gear Solid, and then games like Bravely Default and Etrian Odyssey, which feel typical of games one would find on a PlayStation system), and it feels a lot like a PlayStation system in its approach (which, again, makes sense, given that Nintendo literally designed it as a response to the PSP and its success). So I would think that the answer will be 3DS, but I have a feeling that it will be DS.

Whatever it is, which one would you go for? And why?

I don't consider any of them modern, but based on your definition I suppose I would have to say DS>3DS>wii>wii u.

The DS had a great library of games and I loved playing it back in the day.

The 3DS has nothing I care for. It is just my pokemon machine. I got it as a gift so I can't complain too much, but I am really bored with it right now.

Wii sports was awesome. i didn't like anything else on the system. I regret buying it.

Wii U really bugs me. I am not digging the Tablet Controller and I have out grown nintendo's franchises. I normally buy every system every gen like I have been doing the past 30 years, but I really see no point in getting a wii u. I am willing to live with out it. Maybe next gen.

3DS baybeh. I've already bought more games for it than I did for the DS at the same point in their respective life cycles. The fact that it has access to the DS library is just icing on the cake.

I'll weigh in saying one feature I wish both the 3DS and Vita have would be a full digital catalog of DS and PSP games. The 3DS does a good job with full BC with physical DS games working just fine on a 3DS, unfortunately Vita doesn't play UMDs and probably not a great feature to have anyways and they do have a digital store with some games, and some great PSP games at that, I just wish it were more robust. And while 3DS has great BC working with physical DS games, they've shit for the eShop digital store except for some DSiWare games. And while I've no real interest in the Vita, if these features were in the PSTV I'd totally get one... hell, I'll still probably get one.

One small but significant feature of the 3DS I wish the Vita had (and by that extension the PSTV) is the ability to use SDHC cards, something that's a real turnoff on Sony's end with those pricey proprietary memory cards.

Would have made more sense, IMO, if you were to ask what people's favorite between Gamecube and the WiiU, or a GBA and 3DS since these systems do not share the same library. With that being said, I'd go for a WiiU so I can also play Wii games, and a 3DS so I can also play DS games.

DS. 3DS is a piece of shit, Wii is good, but adheres to an obscure control scheme more often than not, and Wii U is getting there

I'm sure the DS is the closest thing to the objectively correct answer, but I'm going with the Wii... for now. I think the WiiU is quickly coming up on it.

I suppose the Wii as I own one. I really enjoyed playing New Super Mario Bros coop with my daughter. I don't like motion controls though and the system ruined Zelda for me with Skyward Sword.

@charizard1605: None.

I really dislike handheld gaming so DS/3DS are out by default.

Wii U is a continuation of Wii , another lack of 3rd party support console which will provide one of the same high quality first party titles then will go in a serious life support ( we already know another mario wont find its way on Wii U for example so that most likely means no another Zelda , Smash and maybe even Kart ) then silently will die exactly like Wii ( they already mentioned another console is on the makings and thats bad to say it in public when your main console isnt even out 2 years ) which will make Wii U another dust collector like Wii was... So no...

The only system i would love to buy but i didnt in the end was Gamecube. Traditional controls , great hardware , fun 1st party exclusives AND some decent 3rd party support ( i consider RE remake and Zero exclusivity for example an achievement of its time for Nintendo ).

After GC .. Wii/Wii U .. no way. A rent of Wii U with some games i like will do the trick like i did with Wii and thats it. Mario/Zelda/Bayonetta 2 and thats it.. 3/4/5 games wont justify to give 500euros more or less ( 600$++) for me... no when i can have all the experience i can with 50/60e in total and avoid another dust collector by renting thats it

The last Nintendo hardware that was my "main" console was when I was a kid and had the NES and SNES.

I barely played N64. The Gamecube I only got late in the gen, but I did play it for a good year solidly around 2006-2007. I then bought the Wii at launch, and soon after is where I officially parted ways with Nintendo. Yeah I played the Mario Galaxy's, Skyward Sword, New Super Mario Bros and a few others. Comically, my most played Wii game was probably Tiger Woods golf due to playing that alot with friends for awhile. But Wii was pretty much dead to me most of the gen. Haven't yet bothered with the Wii-U, I might pick it up as it's being discontinued.

I did get a 3DS, but it doesn't command much of my time. I've only spent significant time with a handful of games for it (I've basically beaten Mario 3D Land, Zelda, MarioKart7, Luigi Mansion). I do have some more games on standbye when i can find the time (Fire Emblem, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Kingdom Hearts). That's really about it for me as far as Nintendo is concerned. I might pick up Ocarina of Time for 3DS, but I don't even really track their games anymore.

Well since you defined the word modern as post Gamecube, I'd have to say none. Nintendo's last two home consoles (Wii & Wii U) imo have been trash, and I'm not into portable gaming. Haven't bought Nintendo hardware since the GC now that I think on it. Their retro shit is where it's at for me. I still buy games once in a blue moon for my NES, SNES, and N64; not my GC though.

The Wii had a shit ton of 3rd party support, as seen with the massive amounts of shovelware and unique gems that system had. I also don't agree with it dying silently; Its momentum ceased, but the Wii went out with a bang in 2012 with the release of Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower.

The Wii was a system filled with crazy japanese gems and AA mid-tier titles, an extension of the PS2 era, and the last of its kind. The Wii is more similar to the PS2 than the PS3 is.

As for the WiiU, i see it as a continuation from the Gamecube era, but with far less 3rd party support.

SHIT of 3rd party support ... Thats not what i was looking for.

And yes it did died out of nowhere ! Do you know many consoles before Wii that were winning by far a console war let alone having 100M ++ console users out there and just ... being in life support for almost 2 years then ... dead !!? Do you know many consoles like this ? I knew none before Wii. Even Sony with 5-6 billion losses per year supported PS3 users till few months before PS4.. So please .. those are facts. Dont beleive me ? Go google ..all facts are there.

The only similarity i see Wii having towards PS2 are sales and that alone ... You are crazy to compare one of the biggest 3rd party support consoles of all time with countless AAA/AA caliber 3rd party exclusives/time exclusives let alone multiplatforms with Wii. Sony also supported PS2 platform with games even after PS3 release. What the heck are you trying to compare here.. Not even close. I can prove it anyday you want with actual numbers. Do you really wanna make some gaming lists of exclusives/time exclusives and multiplatforming ? No you dont ... believe me ... Wont even be fair for Wii. So please ..thinking that Wii is even close to PS2 when it comes to software...bro.. come on.

Wii U = GC era ? Are you crazy now ?

Bro , you are nintendo fan clearly , nothing bad with that , but you need to see things straight and see the facts of what they are.

Bro , you are nintendo fan clearly , nothing bad with that , but you need to see things straight and see the facts of what they are.

The fact of the matter is that the Wii had plenty of 3rd party support, their quality is irrelevant in this context, in which you stated that the Wii lacked 3rd party support comparable to the WiiU, which isn't true. The WiiU has almost no support, the Wii had a ton.

I disagree, as i've said before it did lose momentum after the motion fad ended. But considering the release of the RainFall trilogy that i mentioned right at the end of its lifespan, i think it ended well enough. If it weren't for those releases, then sure.

I'm not comparing the Wii with the PS2, i said that the system was like an extension of the PS2; a system filled with japanese gems and AA mid-tier titles. In that respect and considering its sales, it is similar to the PS2, more so than the PS3 is, in my opinion.

Yeah, the WiiU is a continuation of the Gamecube, as in its selling like shit in comparison to its adversaries, and is on a downward spiral market-share wise. Except for the Wii, Nintendo's systems have been selling less and less with each release ever since the NES (NES:61mil, SNES:49mil, N64:33mil, Gamecube:22mil). The Wii was the sole exception, and the WiiU is right back on its unfortunate track.

I'm a PC gamer, but i like Nintendo as well.

Anyway, getting back to the Wii's 3rd party support for a moment. Regarding their quality, it's true that a lot of them where crappy shovelware. But, there was a significant number of quality 3rd party releases as well, for example:

  • No More Heroes 1&2
  • Red Steel 2
  • Fatal Frame 4
  • Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon
  • Tatsunoko Vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
  • Pandora's Tower
  • The Last Story
  • Sonic Colours
  • A Boy and his Blob
  • The House of the Dead: Overkill
  • Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade
  • Little King's Story
  • Dead Space Extraction
  • Goldeneye 007
  • de Blob 1&2
  • Rayman Origins
  • Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
  • Resident Evil Umbrella & Darkside Chronicles
  • Rune Factory Frontier

Off the top of my head.

Handhelds shouldn't even be listed just look at vita...

Moreover, if we assume that gamers are more computer savvy than the avg person, prob running emulators on their phones.

Off the top of my head.

Theres no thing as an extend to PS2. Ps2 has no extensions... Noone can go near to what Ps2 achieved in a mere 4-5 years .. Numbers are not even at all , how is possible to call Wii an extension to Ps2.

Near 70 games METACRITIC at AAA range with Wii having 12 while some of those are old generation games ( RE4/Okamin/Zelda:TP) so the new games are 9 !! 70vs9 that is. Nothing more to discuss there. Almost 70 vs 9 AAA titles ... What are you trying to say? Seriously you want me to count AA also?

Want me to compare Wiis exclusives/time exclusives out of those titles you just mentioned vs PS2s ? You dont want that bro , just let it be. Theres not 1 in a million for Wii to even think to go near PS2 when it comes to total AAA/AA third party support let alone AAA/AA third party exclusives/time exclusives. Lets not do this .. its common sense ... You bringing examples games RE chronices and old generation games like RE4 to justify your point of view ... i mean , common... 70 AAA games more or less.. Wii having 12 with 3 of them being PS2/GC era games ... Lets not bring AA into this , will be ...too unfair for Wii.

What the **** does Metacritic have to do with anything? ..

Don't worry, i'll let it be.
