PSone = NES, where the Playstation name established itself into the gaming market just as how the Nintendo name did with the NES.

PS2 = SNES, launched after Sega(dreamcast) just like the SNES did after the Genesis. PS2 had a huge library of quality games just like the SNES did.

PS3 = N64/GC, where it launched nearly last with the wii just like how the N64 launched after the psone and Saturn and GC launched after PS2 and with the XBOX. Last place in sales, and still somewhat struggling with the sales like the N64 and GC. Quality games aren't as abundant as the competitors just like the N64 and GC, yet there are some quality games. MGS4 is AAAA, LOZ: OOT is AAAA. PS3 has blu ray instead of dvd9, N64 had cartridges instead of CD, GC had mini disk instead of DVD.

I would say that the Playstation series is going through it's N64/GC stage right now. I'm guessing Sony will sell out with the PS4 next gen like Nintendo is doing now with the wii, but in their own way. Instead of making it a toy like Nintendo did with the Wii, Sony will make it a into a cheap compact media device that will sale like crazy and appeal to an even wider market. Most likely Apple and Sony will sign a deal to make it into the console version of the iphone. :P

P.S. I would say M$ is following in the footsteps of SEGA and that the 360 is going through it's Genesis stage right now, but it's kind of far-fetched. I mean everything fits the bill until we get to the Saturn and Dreamcast stage of the game. With all the exclusives M$ is gobbling up I doubt the XBOX 720 will be like the Saturn and with all the money M$ has I doubt the 4th XBOX console will share the same fate as the Dreamcast.

By your logic, that means it would take Sony 2 gens to come back to its former glory, rather than 1.

Maybe, but I am sure PS3 will sell more than 30 Million unlike the N64, but perhaps relatively to the PS1 and PS2 it might be like the GCN and N64. MAking predictions about future hardware is pretty tough lol :?

Interesting theory. However I can't really see them combining with apple, that would seem more like something Nintendo would do. Maybe they will make some type of game tv, a small HD with the console inside. So it would be a console that comes with the screen sorta what apple did with their Mac pros (Which i'm actually typing this on.) Gaming would be only one of the many things it could do, and they wouldn't advertise it as a console. Then again that last thing already happened with the PS3, as in an ad they said "Buy the PS3, sonys new blu-ray player!" They may not exactly go for less expensive and "Casual", but just something different. Oh, and after this gen they should probably drop the name Playstation, i think three consecutive consoles with one name and different numbers is enough. Anyways such circumstances could be interesting, and would certainly give much more variety to the gaming market. Right now I think that the 360 and the PS3 are trying to be the same thing, the console that has the best graphics and the one that "Hardcore" gamers will buy. I'd like it if one of them (Preferably the Xbox) would just win and the other could try something new or drop out.

Unlike the N64/GC, the PS3 actually has the best games and it only gets better.

Problem with this comparison is that Sony is still getting solid 3rd party support. It's not 3rd party exclusive support, but for the most part 3rd parties are supporting Sony as much as they ever had. With N64, the third party support pretty much disappeared.

But the thing is, third-parties are almost all sony has to rely on because they themselves don't make games. Nintendo had strong exclusive first party games and not that many third party games. Sony has not so strong exclusive third party support and not existent first party support. Which sounds better?

while Sony isn't doing stellar right now, i really don't think its going anywhere. it has shipped a lot of units (much more than the N64, i believe, and definitely more than the dreamcast: both great consoles, btw). personally, i never want any gaming platform to fail, including PC. the people that ultimately lose are the gamers.

How do you know it only gets better? XBox 360 has a lot of awesome games. It may share them with PC but won't find them on PS3.
