Sony has today announced its Fiscal year 2007 Q1 earnings, including details of sales to date and sales projections for its three video game platforms.

At the end of Q1, worldwide sales of the PlayStation 3 stand at approximately 4.48 million (prior to Q1 2007 Sony only quoted units shipped not sold). 3.57 million came in the final half of the previous year, with a disappointing 0.71 million recorded in the first quarter 2007. Despite the console's poor sales in Q1, Sony has announced that it expects to sell a further 10.29 million units in the following three quarters, ending March 2008.

If Sony can meet its forecast then as of March 31, 2008, worldwide PlayStation 3 sales will have reached approximately 14.5 million units.

Sales of its other consoles, the PS2 and PSP were much better than that of the PS3. The aging PS2 is still going strong with Q1 sales of 2.7 million units, a 400,000 increase over the same quarter in 2006. PSP sales are reported as 2.14 million units, showing a year on year increase of over 700,000 units.

Forecast sales for the PlayStation 2 in fiscal 2007 are 10 million units, with the PSP expected to sell 9 million units.

It basically all has to happen this Xmas to meet a March 2008 quota of 14.5 million sold, so I'm thinking closer to $300, the historical sweet spot for console prices.

Hahahaha, you've got to be kidding me.

I doubt it. Show me a dozen more games and drop the price another $100 (this time for real) and then we'll talk about that being feasible.

Not even a $400 PS3 can save them. Brand names don't help ala PSP. Casual appeal is where it's at.

If that plan doesn't involve a dozen more games, a killer app, and a hundred dollar price drop, that plan will not follow through. That's something like....over ten mil by the end of the year.

Exactly why would they say something like that if they didn't expect it to happen. If what they've predicted doesn't pan out their stock could fall quitea bit, they wouldn't say that unless they believed it.

First he is talking about selling to retailers not customers

Second-According to VG Charts and we know cows believe VG Charts again well they say 3.89 million have been sold to customers. So in 9 months PS3 sold 3.89 with worldwide launches and one Christmas so far. So there is no way PS3 will sell another 10.61 million to customers in 8 months to reach 14.5 million.

If they want to reach 14.5 million, they have to sell twice as fast as the Wii and they'd barely make it.

Great argument, my man..... wait, does Sony have a crystal ball???

Oh what, Sony knows their business better than we do.... hmm.... seems to me that we know just as well as they do about how the PS3 has been selling.

Did I say it will happen? I don't think they'll reach that number.. maybe 12 million or so. If they drop the price in europe, aswell as Japan they might have a chance to meet these figrues IMO. But the thing is, I don't work in this field... Sony does, therefore they obviously must have a plan to meet these figures - so who am I to say they won't? My stance on this... wait and see.

Sony is offering a bundled 80gb SKU - what happens when the non-bundle 80gb hits? Pretty obvious here, it'll be 499$ - c'mon guys! Look at these forecasts, that alone tells you Sony wants these things on the market - they know how well a 600$ console sells! Figure it out!

Now you're the one with the crystal ball. What makes you so sure Sony will unbundle the 80gig? Once PS2 and Xbox bundles appeared, they became pretty much standard, with only the games bundled changing.

Quite ambitious aren't they. The funny thing is, they might actually pull it off if they have a $399 SKU on the market by Christmas. I know sooooo many people who would get the PS3 if it was $400.

The only people with working crystal balls appear to be people predicting good things happening to Sony. If naysayers aren't allowed to guess, neither is anyone else.

Who knows what is going to happen, but something definitely has to. There is no way SOny can meet their projection (not even close) if they go back to $599 and only selling 700,000 in a quarter. If they are going to sell 10 million by the end of the year they are now going to have to sell over 1 million a month as opposed to the 200,000 a month they have been.

IN other words, Sony is betting on sales increasing %500 and staying there every single month. I don't think that has ever happened in history and would require a massive , aggressive push by Sony.
