Sony Forecasts 14.5 million PS3 To Be Sold By The End of March 2008.

It hasn't even sold 5 million yet and it has been out for a for about 8 months and it would have to match the DS in terms of sales worldwide I can't see it happening.

Now this would easily make me say PS3 can reach 14.5 mil by April 2008, but that SKU/price needs to be implented before Christmas.

I couldn't be arsed to read through this entire thread, but I will say that, while I think 14.5m is a pretty large number to shoot for, its not nearly as improbable as it may seem.

Consider this if you will. A $399 (or more likely a $499) SKU out by this holiday season, coupled with the releases of titles like Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank Future TOD, UT3, and Uncharted, all out by the holiday season (thats not to say more games won't push for the holiday lineup). As well as having the megaton PS3 exclusive games such as MGS4, KZ2, and LBP planned for Q1 '08.

I think Sony might be on to something. Look how many consoles GeOW pushed.0rin

Consider this: Sony right now is selling about 250-270k units worldwide per month (100k in the US, 50-60k in japan, and europe was about the same as the US with the PS2, so I'm taking it as 100k). Sony would need to quadruple their sell rates right now in order to get even near the 14.5 million units. The games you mentioned will not be able to do this. Even if we were to consider that november and december are huge months, the PS3 would need to triple it's sales numbers.

It's not impossible, I guess, but no analyst in it's right mind would make such a harebrained prediction. We're talking taking the PS3 into Wii levels of hype and sales, and even then it will be close. I don't think even a 399 SKU would be relied upon to have this performance.

the article cleary states that sony had sold 4.48 million consoles to retail at the end of march of this year. now that would mean they would have 12 months to ship another 10 million systems...

They meant Q1 2008, which was april, may, june.

In other words:

Q1 2008 = april, may, june
Q2 2008 = july august sept
Q3 2008 = oct, now, dec
Q4 2008 = jan08, feb08, mar08

So, in another words, depending on who's sales number you believe, roughly, Sony is saying that will triple the amount of units they currently have shipped, sold or whatever the "correct" term may be, 8 months from now?

Unless the drop the price of the PS3 into $400 dollar price point, permanently, without any strings attached, strong first part line-up or not, I do not see how anyone of clear thinking could feel that is within the realm of realistic possibility.

Though, in all fairness, on the other hand, I could see them hitting within the range of 10 million.

While everyone would love to see a cheaper PS3 model, Sony is moving in the oppposite direction. Their whole plan seems to be to keep adding things to the $599 version (20 more gigs, a game)until people buy it.

Wasn't the whole reason they phased out the 20 gb model because they were losing more money on it than the 60gb?? Link Now they are phasing out the 60 gb model??

If they didn't want to sell a 20gb model at $499, why would they sell a 40gb model at $399???????

While everyone would love to see a cheaper PS3 model, Sony is moving in the oppposite direction. Their whole plan seems to be to keep adding things to the $599 version (20 more gigs, a game)until people buy it.

But how do you know that the PS3 will sell at a much faster rate it looks tobe doing mearaly average so far. nobody knows how the consoles will turn out, i expect the PS3 to sell about 10 mill by that time
