Interacting with games without using a controller is apparently a really big deal. Microsoft's got its "Project Natal" thing and Sony has its magic motion wand. Oh, wait. That's technically a controller. That you hold. Fear not, as, during the Develop Conference going on right now in the UK, Sony has revealed that the existing PlayStation Eye camera can recognize you -- well, specifically your face -- and track your skeletal movement without getting all touchy-feely.

SCEE says that it already has libraries available for developers who want to integrate the technology into their games. Develop magazine's site quotes developer relations head, Kish Hirani, who divulged that the software was developed by SCEE R&D along with outside developers.

While attending the conference, we also learned that it's capable of making out the movement of individual digits -- fancy-talk for fingers -- along with those of your facial bones. Sony has not commented on whether certain hand gestures will be edited out by the software. (Nothing can edit what you'll find after the break from your mind.)

I think this is just Sony being reactionary as usual.

But even if the camera is as sensitive as they say, it's all about software. Why then have they not released anything pushing the camera to it's fullest potential?

Lastly, I still don't think it recognizes forward movement, which is why they still had to make the wand.

Fail in what way?

I mean, it's pretty clear that motion control has been a success. It is the only reason the Wii sells, and it's destroying the competition.

Who's to say that a "Wii Sports" on 360 with better graphics won't be a hit? Now, if you are arguing if they can make something that YOU or I want to play with Natal, that is of course a different story.

that is true, they showed the duck and water tech at e3 05, so this motion sensing was already known about. they have made mini games for the eyetoy since the launch so it's pointless saying it can do a bunch of stuff if you don't have any software to back it up.

How about "my son wants the 360 but I dont like him sitting on the couch and playing those games of he's all day long" Get the 360 with Natal.

No, I think people who liked the idea of it but were turned off by the graphics, cutesy characters, or limited uses of teh Wii and never got one (like myself) will get a 360 instead. Then you have motion control and online song purchases, and movie rentals, all in one box. I hope you don't think Nintendo's 50 million is all there is in the world to sell to?

Give me motion control with better graphics and I may jump. Especially if y

Agreed.

Software (and integration) is how MS beats Sony with LIVE, and is how they will beat them with NATAL.

let's be honest here my friend, we are probably looking at Natal being the tech for the XBOX 720, and the new PS3 Wand being the tech for the PS4. unfortunatly, the wii has been successful, and Sony and Microsoft are going to try and beat them at it now

Why do you think people bought the PS3 or 360 over the Wii? They don't like motion controls. They're not going to buy a console with motion controls and they're gonna move to PC. If that happens, Sony, MS and Nintendo are all going to be fighting over an even smaller user base. It's not going to happen, no way.

The only way I can think of this as being useful is some sort of future OS that uses a computer camera to record gestures the user makes to the PC and acts on them.

But Natal is far different from a motion-sensing wand. You can move a character's body parts, but doing things like moving forward in a game's space, driving vehicles and even pausing is a mystery mechanic-wise on how they'll be performed on Natal.

Yeah, I linked those comments in another thread yesterday. It all comes down to support. Sony may have the tech out already and even the software to utilize it, but right now it isn't being brought out for us to use, so it means little to me.

ok, yes, the people that dont like the wii for the controls bought a ps3 (like me) or 360. however, looking at the sales of the three consoles. trust me, SOny and M$ would love to have those console sales. in order to do that, they will gladly abandon the hardcore gamers and go to motion controls. They are creating their motion controls to be the best to take the market from Nintendo next gen

Hope they both fail, motion sensing of any kind has been a bane to gaming ever since it was announced.

Crossel777

Why not just play board games then? Wishing it will fail is silly. How about wishing that something cool comes out of it now that there is competition?

Because I pretty much know that barely anything good will come out of it. It will be never taken seriously for complex games just casual trash.

Closeminded much? I'd say very much. When did you start gaming, last year? They very foundation that the videogame industry rests on is casual games. The industry was started on casual games. Grow up a bit will ya? Causal gaming isn't going to steal your time away from brooding spikey haired digital cosplay.

Until they actually show something worthwhile they are basically talking out their ass.

aaronmullan

Same with Microsoft and Natal then.

Absolutely. The only thing is they have showed something. Not only that but the day they announced it, the dev kits went out. That's a bit more than saying "oh, we had that a while ago" don't you think?

I think this is just Sony being reactionary as usual.

But even if the camera is as sensitive as they say, it's all about software. Why then have they not released anything pushing the camera to it's fullest potential?

Lastly, I still don't think it recognizes forward movement, which is why they still had to make the wand.

TBoogy

that is true, they showed the duck and water tech at e3 05, so this motion sensing was already known about. they have made mini games for the eyetoy since the launch so it's pointless saying it can do a bunch of stuff if you don't have any software to back it up.

Agreed.

Software (and integration) is how MS beats Sony with LIVE, and is how they will beat them with NATAL.

How is a gimmick suppose to beat another gimmick? :

I remember reading a magazine about a year ago and the person behind the design of the pseye basically said it can do all the thing natal can. He didn't mention natal because it hadn't existed yet, but the features he mentioned were all present in Natal. This guy was behind the design and everything and claimed it can track 3d movement, facial recognition and everything. I honestly wish I could provide a scan or an image, but it was so long ago I honestly don't remember where I read it, but right now the PlayStation magazine and game informer are coming to mind. It maybe 1 of those magazines. So honestly I think Sony is just trying to get it out there that their camera can do the same thing and has been out longer. Honestly I wouldn't by natal or pseye for games. Only reason I'd buy either is for video chatting with other members.

Why would I need that suggestion? Nothing I said was even remotely hypocritical.

This is all very cool technology, but its useless for gaming.

hakanakumono
I agree, i see no use for any of this motion crap for myself and the rest of the hardcore gaming crowd.

Wasn't the PS Eye released over a year ago? Maybe even 2 years ago, don't know, but still..it's funny they haven't mentioned this ever since it launched, but now that MS has Natal they're like "yeah we've had this for a while we just never cared enough to use it" ..lol these guys..

If you read my post although I wish I had more evidence other then my words the guy who designed the pseye claimed it could do all this stuff since launch. I'm seriously going to see if I can find the magazine. It will be hard because I moved since I last had that magazine and usually I throw magazines out after I finished reading them and after I have owned them for a while.

Yes I know it could do 'most' of this stuff to an extent, which is why I find it funny that it's been so long for Sony to even speak of it. They have had 0 support for it aside from The Eye of Judgement, and that was released at launch, since then they've practically ignored it and never even spoken of it. Now all the sudden since MS has Natal, Sony is getting all agressive with PS EYE, acting like they've been supporting facial recognition for years when they've put it in the corner to sit like its in trouble. It just amuses me the gall they have.
