In two or three years that trojan horse is going to be huge. As the HD market expands and the PS3's price drops we're going to see a huge amount of growth in PS3 sales simply because of the BR feature combined with the game console. If the PS3 can stay within $100 of the price of standalone BR players I could see the PS3 beating the 360 and possibly even the Wii in sales.

It seems likely it might be beneficial to it. But I'm not sure that you can qualify it as needed.

Yes, Blue Ray has totally killed them, it has nothing to do with the fact that the 360 and Wii have more popular games.

I'm not going to bother linking you, but Mark Rein has stated that extra maps will be cut out of the Xbox 360 version due to the limitations of DVD9.

That doesn't really mean its needed, Epic can just release those maps for free on XBL when UT3 comes out anyway.

Well, whats ruining it currently is the Blue-Ray, but after prices drop that might change. Doesn't matter how popular it becomes on a console though, it's the porn industry that decides the fate of the format wars.

Sony going with BluRay might have denied them a quick victory early in the console race, but it certainly hasn't killed the PS3.

No, it's 300-400 dollars. Either keep up with prices or stop pulling numbers out of your ass.

Thats the point, people are going to see it as a BR player with a game console for an extra $100 or so. In the next couple of years a significant portion of the population is going to be upgrading to HD formats, and BR is looking like I'll be the winner. Considering most gamers from last gen don't own a console yet and will most likely be upgrading to HDTV's (if they haven't already) there will be a huge market for both BR players and consoles, and the PS3 is the only console that offers both right out of the box for much less than the price of a stand-alone player and a console combined.

yeah but the market doesnt seem ready for blu ray yet, people just upgraded to DVD's and arent ready for blu ray... i really dont see blu ray overtaking DVD sales for a long time......

also HDTV is only like 30-35% of households at the moment...... and out of those a real small % are 1080p capable

IMO sony is just puttign to much useless tech in 1080 p capability is worthless since developers never use it and nobody owns a 1080p TV anyways...... and blu ray nobody wants to upgrade LOL

Hardly. At this point in time Blu-ray diode (no need for decoding hardware and such since the Cell does it) is only adding about $10 to the cost of the system down from $150 at launch. Sony just absorbed the loses and now it doesn't even add much at all. Blu-ray as standard is costing us nothing extra really. PS3 overall is just a high end piece of equipment. Blu-ray in PS3 is just a benifit to Sony, developers, and a free bonus to us.

And quit arguing against Blu-ray. 360 games have already pushed DVD9 to the limit. The games will exist but things have to be cut or limitations set from the beginning. What's next gen about that? Devs for PS3 have all the space they need for whatever they want to do. Diverse environments and sounds, bonus material, texture streaming takes up a ton of space (why do you think Gears PC has extra single player levels?! I bet almost certainly they just got cut from the 360 version for space limitations). Blu-ray is a good thing for all parties involved. Sony makes money dominating the movie market, devs get all the space they could need, and gamers get the free bonus of HD movies and the games that use the extra space.

It's still lower than what he claims, even in Canada.

Also, sorry, I probably shouldn't have lashed out. Too many fanboys on SW, and I havn't come here in a long time. :(

Thats why I've been saying in 2 or three years, once TV goes completely HD and HDTVs and the PS3 become much cheaper. The PS3 could consievably be wellunder $400 in 2 years, which is a great deal for a BR player and a game console. So what we'llhave is a huge marketlooking for a combination of HDTVs, HDmovie players and game consoles, and the PS3 is thecheapest way togetboththe console and the HD movie player.Besides, you don't need 1080p to notice the difference betweenHD formatsand DVD.

Sony is the only company that actually thinks ahead in my opinion. Hell, Nintendo still doesn't use FULL DVD. DVD is last gen, this gen is Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Next gen will be something different. Sony always gives new drives every generation. CD, DVD, and now Blu-Ray. Many games have proven that Blu-Ray is needed, and having things such as uncompress graphics and audio is really good. Blu-Ray is the future according to sales of movies, and Sony did a good thing investing in it. I rather have Blu-Ray than a last gen format. Hell, in 2010, we'll still be playing with our PlayStation 3s because all gen consoles will still be around by then, and using DVD in 2010 is not good. Blu-Ray does nothing with the programming of games, it just gives you a better experience, and a bigger price tag, which in my opinion is worth it.

Sony took a risk with blue ray and playstation and hopefully it might payoff since if one wins the other wins at the same time. No point try to release a new format without some backup. It seems like sony are winning with blue ray; correct me if I am wrong.

i disagree. i think sony is smart for putting blu-ray in, but dumb for everything else in there console(graphics card is not as good as 360, way to powerfull processer).

since if the world goes blu-ray they win the next-gen dvd market (so far, in my eyes they are winning).

No, not Blu-Ray, it was GREED that killed Sony.

They wanted to dominate the video game & movie market. They wanted to own the next format for movies and tried using the popularity of the PS2 to shoe horn Blu-Ray into homes by sticking it in the PS3 and have the gaming community(probably the healthiest candidate for hardcore early adopters) pay and pave the way for Blu Ray.

BUT...With movies like TRANSFORMERS not comming to BLu-Ray, well, Paramount and Dreamworks didn't want Sony to own such a huge share in gaming and movies and decided to go HD-DVD.

The name brand didn't hold its strength after all the battery, firmware and unreliability issues happene, not to mention the sheer arrogance of Sony's PR.

So now, Sony's stock has only increase ONE DOLLAR from this very day a year ago and Nintendo's has tripled whith Halo 3 and another bad PS3 christmas around the corner.

Sony's greed and underestimation of the gaming community costed it its thrown.

Blu Ray for this gen is not needed PERIOD. Devs are just starting to fully maximize space on DVD 9. To me, Blu Ray or any large capacity storage medium encourages sloppy work and 3 hours of useless full motion video and cutscenes backed with boatloads of "xtra features", trailers blah blah blah.

You said it your self. It might be needed in the future but right now DVD9 is just fine. Yeah that's correct but Sony thinks ahead, unlike microsoft who will just release a new 360 with blu-ray in 3-4 years when blu-ray is needed.

Blu-Ray is nice thing to have for the PS3 but on most muti-platforms I don't see it being much use at all.
