Sony has finally confirmed a new model for the PlayStation 3.

Sony has finally confirmed a new model for the PlayStation 3. Its 50% smaller compared to the first PS3 and 25% smaller compared to the last model. HDD space has been increased to 500GB.

The Charcoal Black version hits Japan on October 4. The Classic White PS3 model comes out on November 22.

It looks that we will see the PS4 next year....i hope.

The end of the generation new model that no one asked for. I see no reason for this espcially since it's the same price, but whatever. Sony had a mind blowing amount of SKUs this generation.

If it's easier to manufacture than the current slim, and can generate more profit for Sony, then good for them. Personally, I don't see why this is necessary. Especially at this point.

I think Sony made a horrible mistake by not making this cheaper. From the perceptive of a casual gamer, the PS3 does not look like that much of a bargain when you compare it to the Wii U's price point. And most people who would be looking for a cheaper system will just go with a 360.

Sony could have put a major dent in the Wii U's launch by making this system much cheaper, and it would have put further pressure on Microsoft. Maybe the 12 GB model might be the cheaper option, but as it looks now Sony missed a major opportunity to drop the price of the PS3 and gain some momentum against the Wii U and 360.

The 360 should have been at 99 dollars by now without the silly contract stuff and the Wii should be much cheaper. It just seems like all three companies are just milking these prices.

I remember back during the 16-bit era when Sega and Nintendo engaged in a price war. Now, it just seem like these systems refuse to drop price.

Sad attempt so buy another ps3, if it wasn't then they would have brought the price down a bit.

Wii U is coming, we should do something about it.

Cheaper to produce.
Sell at same pricepoint for now.

229 euros for a 12gb PS3 when a current slim 160gb PS3 is being sold at 234 euros where I live?

Sony never learns... this was the right time to take some attention from the Wii U if have they released a 12gb super cheap like 149 euros... even I that dont work at a big company know that would be a great strategy...

This is just one more reason that I didn't buy a new ps3 when mine got the YLOD. Sony is making terrible decisions and its just getting frustrating. How does releasing a new model that does nothing different at the same (or higher) right before a new system comes out make any sense at all? It almost seems like the psp again, just keep releasing as many different models as you can and hopefully one of them does better than the others.

Obviously the steep price cuts for that are still a ways off, but this is the hardware that Sony has designed with the intention of selling PS3s for cheap in the future. Expect a big price slashing after the PS3 is announced.
