@ProtossX: Fail.

Sunset OD isn't a copy of Infamous SS by any stretch.

Tomb Raider was a game long before both Uncharted, and God of War stole gameplay ideas and mechanics off of it.

Both Sony and MS stole motion controls from Nintendo.

Both Sony and Nintendo stole online from MS.

Sony steals ideas just like they all do. it's how the industry works.

I would spend $400 on a system every 2-3 years if the leap is noticeable enough. Sell the old system for $250 or so. What would be the problem? We do this with cellphones currently.

As power increases, it takes longer and longer to make a game to take advantage of that power. A 3 year generation wouldn't even see a single game made for most of the console gens because development cycles are already 2-4 years or longer depending on what it is.

This comes courtesy of this job listing, which is recruiting a software engineer to build a game for their next generation system, specifically for R&D purposes. The relevant part of the listing:

We have an exciting opportunity at Sony Computer Entertainment of America (PlayStation). We seek a senior game programmer to assist us in developing a game used for R&D purposes related to our next generation gaming system. For someone passionate about gaming this is a very rare opportunity. After reviewing the below job profile, if this is you, please apply!

I find this very pleasing. Last generation dragged on for far too long, and I never want a repeat of that. It is good to see that, while stragglers like Nintendo are understandably keen to move on to the next generation and start over, even the PS4, which is the current leader, is willing to not stay stuck on this generation for too long.

Charizard, and the rest of the posters who obviously didn't read, or know how to comprehend....

I highly doubt this has anything at all to do with PS5.

"game programmer" .... "in developing a game.".. related to our next generation gaming system... "software engineer"

This could be a number of things.

1. It specifically says game programmer and developing a game. Not hardware engineers.. which is what you need first for a new system.

2. related to our next generation system. This is very vague and the definition here could be anything. People still label the ps4 as "next gen" it's only been out for 1.5 years... they are most likely referring to the ps4. OR it could be for the unreleased "Morpheus" which would make even more sense due to the R&D... for software. Lets not forget that VR is a thing and needs developers.

3. No where did it mention PS5 or even hint at it. Next generation in the early stages of a consoles life usually means current generation. It's a PR tactic as it keeps the current gen "bleeding edge".

Companies start work on the next console right away, but usually not game software until at least the year before release. This is most likely ps4 or Morpheus.

Also what's all this bullcrap about gens being too long. Why? Last gen was a perfect length. If a generation is too short you miss out on games taking full advantage of the hardware and devs need to start over from the beginning and we get crap like ryse, titanfall and destiny again. Games with little to no content. I'd rather have a long generation with kickass games (like The Last of us, Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Dishonorod, Beyond 2 Souls, etc... all of which came out at the tail end of Ps3 ).

Why wish for a short generation? Do you enjoy spending money on consoles? I sure as hell don't (and stick to one console + PC and both handhelds per gen.) When a new console cycles we get a year of mediocre shit.... happens everytime as developers need to learn to program for the thing. The longer they have with it the better they get and can make some amazing products. It isn't until ideas are tapped out, and no progress can be made that a new console is needed.

Yep.. Some games take 5+ years to even make. And as power increases and know how decreases games get less depth. We seen it all last year. Pretty graphics with shit content.

Devs need to learn the machine inside and out, to not have to deal with tech hurdles and just focus on making good games. This takes time and usually doesn't happen until year 2-3 of a console cycle and the best games usually come at the tail end (compare the last of us to too human or haze or some of the other crap we got at the begining of gen 7).

Also game consoles are not cell phones. Your cellphone has a subsidy with the phone company. You have a $600-1000 cell phone, but you don't pay that much. Consoles don't work that way, you have to pay for it all out of pocket. Are you ready to stomach a $1000 console for minimum gains?

If Sony were to begin work on PlayStation 5 then it would be ready by November 2019 which will make a good generation. Give Sony time to make PlayStation 5 really good and have a roster of at least 18 launch games.

@ProtossX: Tbh, Sony is by far the worst out of the big three as far as copying ideas goes.

bs man

when sony makes a game microsoft tries to match or copy it

infamous then they bought sunset overdrive

uncharted 4 then they bought tomb raider

microsoft needs to just stop it an do the own thing an find there own things

Crackdown was around before infamous, Halo was around before Killzone and tomb raider was around before uncharted , Microsoft where the first to have a HDD as standard in a console, MS introduced pay to play online first , Trophies came before achievements.

All companies Copy good ideas, thats the way it goes, to say one is worse than the other is seriously Naive.

At the end of the day you could say that Both MS and SONY have copied Nintendo to death.

Why are people saying a stagnant industry is better than a dynamic and adaptive one? That's what you get from a long console generation.

Guess they need Software Engineers to work on benchmark games to stress the netcode for the PlayStation Streaming Service launching in 2018/19.

How is this newsworthy? Of course they are.

It takes 5+ years to design, test and finalize a console. If they want PS5 ready in the 2018/2019 time frame, they HAVE to start now.

I'm sure M$ is doing the same thing.

Err, no they didn't , Microsoft was doing online gaming on the PC a long time before SONY and SONY's online on Ps2 was limited to a few games and required an Adapter which was only sold in Japan ,SONY may have had HDMI first but the Original Xbox was the first console capable of playing games in HD 720p

As far as online gaming as standard on a console MS was there first.

Yeah this doesn't really mean much.

Just an engineer to start early testing of their game engines and stuff... we already know that basically they never stop the R&D phase (except maybe they ramp down for a year or two immediately after launch, and then get right back into it). Before we see a console reveal at E3, I'm sure they spend at least a year prototyping, and before the prototyping there is surely another year or two theororizing/benchmarking what they are going for. PS5 at E3 2020 confirmed.

edit: and if they are using PC parts from now on, it's probably a waste of time and $$$ for them to sink too much early R&D or draw it out for so long. But I guess if mentally on a 7 year cycle.... they don't want to just have "dead time" without doing any work.

Smart. Console generations should only be 4-5 years. Just make sure the console is profitable at launch. Then make sure that the system has BC since you finally got on a architecture you can agree with and even fans of the previous gen can't complain about moving on.

this time around there is no excuse to not have BC!

But they'll probably find one.

Remasters, Psnow, etc. But it would really suck if Ps5 wasn't BC, more so than Ps4 not having it.

@delta3074: sony was also doing online gaming before the PS2. it just wasnt on a console. games like everquest came out in 1999.

on topic. perfectly normal.

im going to take a shot in the dark at this.

ram: 32GB of, probably, this new stacked memory stuff (the latest version of it available) available for games. i cant see them reserve another 32GB for the OS...maybe 5-6GB. so 36 to 38GB in total.

the equivelent of 3-4 290Xs strapped together in terms of GPU processing power. itll use the latest and greatest tech AMD have available (i think itll be all AMD again of course)

X86 processor...probably not a huge revolution from the jaguar based CPU in the PS4. just more cache, a few more tweaks...maybe running around the 2GHz mark. 12 cores with 10 available for games. over this gen developers will learn to lean more on the GPU and take more of the workload off the CPU side.

similar overall architecture to the PS4 (which is similar to the 360 and first xbox). one unified pool of ram that everything can access and share.

a 1TB HDD as standard. i dont see consoles taking on SSDs as standard for next gen. i dont think the price will be quite there. like the PS3 and 4 it will be easy to replace though and use standard off the shelf hardware.

this ultra blu-ray thingymajig (blu-ray for 4K...maybe 8K depending on costs).

the controller will be very similar to the PS4 controller but i think the light will be removed (or at least made a lot more discrete).

release date: RIGHT NOW!!! well Q4 2018 at the earliest.

I think they meant "nextgeneration" as a misnomer that is often used to hype something as modern or cutting edge instead of literally "the next generation". If fact under the Preferred section they list "next gen" console experience as desirable, obviously no one has experience with the PS5.

they are looking for someone to build a game for a new generation of hardware. Break it down a little

New Game ... meaning the hardware is already roughly sorted (as they wouldn't bother with games) so that rules out the PS5, more likely Morpheus

Agreed they stated for RnD purposes but again, you can't build a game without roughly finalized hardware. so its not the PS5. if that were the case, then they would have been building games for the PS4 back in 2008 ... and they weren't

Starting work could just mean R&D, and any company in Sony's position is probably doing it, MS is probably doing it, Nintendo was probably doing it right after the Wii U released. Doesn't mean your going ahead 100% with things, just means you're taking time, testing waters with new ideas, conceptualizing, whatever.

This isn't new news, we got articles like this last gen.

MS will just put it off to the last minute again and steal Sony's development crumbs. They swooped in and took Cell's PPE, they "borrowed" a cheaper version of Sony's AMD APU, and they will likely just buy another knockoff singleboard solution nearly the same as Sony's and stick it in an ugly noisy box. Assuming Xbox isn't dead by then.

The worst generation since the videogame crash. It's not surprising.

That statement may be overdone... lol. The reality is, most console manufacturers start R & D relatively soon after the launch of a new console. These things take time.

I wouldn't panic yet about this, this is standard practice and has been for some time.

now is not the time to move ahead with new systems

the masses still haven't embraced the current next gen systems and were almost 3 years in

meanwhile the masses all bought nes/snes and ps1 and stuff right when those things came out and got full value from day one

now is not the time to move ahead they need to get ppl in those seats for the next gen they have now were in the next gen now and they need to act like it much more imo

tooting next gen systems when were 3 years in with no games is not gonna look good in the mass public and the masses its very bad actually

So the PS4 is one of the best selling consoles of all time at this point in terms of how quickly it's selling, it was a major success and you don't think 3 years into the life cycle is a good time to start thinking and working on the next system that will probably come out in 2 to 3 years?

lol k
