When it comes to games, Sony is in trouble. Matter of fact, when it comes to the PS3 as a whole, Sony is in real big trouble period.

It's no secret Sony lost sight of what really mattered, the actual games when it comes to a gaming machine. I saw signs of this towards the end of PS2 days, when Sony would refer to the PS2 as a "computer."

Let's break things down just a quick bit:

1) The PS3 currently holds the lowest install base of any next-gen system

2) The PS3 costs the most to develop games for because of complicated and unorthodox hardware

3) The development cycle for a game on the PS3 is the longest because of limited knowledge from devs about Cell/RSX

4) On the software side of things, not only does the PS3 have the least amount of games, it also has the lowest software sales as well. PS3 owners aren't buying enough games.

5) Almost every game on the PS3 has been delayed at some point or another. Its must-own games such as GTAIV, GT5, Socom, MGS4, God of War 3, DMC4, Silent Hill, Ratchet & Clank, UT3, all have seen delays. What's funny is that other features excluding games are also getting delayed. HOME? ¿Donde esta home?

6) PS3 is constantly losing exclusives left and right to other consoles. What do GTAIV, DMC4, Silent Hill, UT3, Alan Wake, Ace Combat 6, Assassin's Creed, Beautiful Katamari, MONSTER HUNTER 3, and a handful of others titles have in common? Oh yea, that's right, lost exclusivity. What makes it worse is that some these games are also being CANNED altogether on the PS3 and are completely gone.

7) Multiplats are generally worse than the 360, a system that is cheaper to begin with.

8 ) Multiplats also release much later on the PS3 because of difficulty porting the game and budget constraints.

9) While PSN is showing improvement, it cannot hold a light to XBOX LIVE. Looks like PS3 owners have to wait till next year for Home as well.

10) The ridiculous amounts of price changes and new SKU's are sure to confuse the HELL out of consumers. The more I think about it, it seems as if Sony intentionally did this to fool consumers. If I'm having a hard time distinguishing between the 20Gb, 40Gb, 60Gb, and 80Gb iterations, imagine what a soccer mom is going to go through this holiday season? I think people will be buying the 40Gb version thinking it has PS2 BC.

11) Sony's decision to include Blu-Ray in the PS3 as standard is one of the riskest moves they could have ever pulled. Part of the reason why I think the PSP has faultered is the whole UMD issue. Didn't Sony learn from BetaMax, UMD, and MiniDisc? Blu-Ray and HD-DVD aren't catching on because there isn't a big enough difference to justify the added cost. VHS to DVD was truly a revolution, not DVD to Blu-Ray.

12) And most importantly....3rd party developers are abandoning the PS3 left and right. Can someone make a list of new games that have been announced for the PS3 from 3rd party developers in the last 5-6 months that were previously not worked on prior to the release of the PS3? The only games the PS3 has to look forward to are the games that have been in developement prior to the launch of the PS3 and now 3rd party devs are panicing because of how much they've spent so far, fearing about low sales. Capcom has abandoned Sony, Ubiosoft isn't too happy...

So what exactly does Sony have that will appeal to devs? Blu-Ray with its big storage capacity?

Wake up cows. The PS3 has potential but right now it's truly swirling down the drain. I honestly can't see any source of salvation for the PS3. Sorry for the long read, I had to get all my points in.

With that all said, I'm still willing to buy a PS3 if that one damn must-own game ever releases for it. I'm no fanboy, I like games. Right now, PS3 has completely dissapointed in that department.

XD88FDB

In other words Sony SUCKS.

I'm still gonna have to play MGS4 on the PS3

But afterwards I hope they burn in hell.

I agree with you, i will get a ps3 so i can play mgs4 but afterwords well lets just say that sony won't be needed anymore...

lol?? FAIL? u pointed out some small points. you can attack any console and make bad points... its easy... also one or two of your points are completely useless.

xbl? psn is FREE, and if your just interested in multiplayer is a great deal. i don't care about xbl , you pay for it.

alot of your argument is delays... i dont care about delays and anybody who dose needs to chillout. dose it mean developing for the ps3 is more expensive? well if they cant afford to spend time on the game there a good chance the games not going to be that great anyway. this dose sound like damage control il admit but its one of the only half decent argument against the ps3. but there are just as bad arguments against all the other consoles.

the hate for ps3 is incredible, people attack the company who is giving you an amazing deal.

Hopefully this thread will continue, the really high amount of cow damage control is humorous.

Anyone else notice the very big range of this thread?
We have several; "I agree" posts. Several; "I knew this already" posts. And several "STFJ00 STOOPID FANBOY" posts.

I find it entertaining how cows immediately jump to the "fanboy" defense control mechanism anytime truth is spoken to them.

Interesting points, but some are faulty and some deserve a bit more exposition.

1) The PS3 currently holds the lowest install base of any next-gen systemSergeantSnitch

True, although given the 360's headstart and Wii's popularity it's more that the PS3 hasn't done anything to truly differentiate itself from its competitors. That is, Sony's mindset is still stuck in the PS1/PS2 days where solid hardware and the competition's weaknesses made them #1.

2) The PS3 costs the most to develop games for because of complicated and unorthodox hardware

3) The development cycle for a game on the PS3 is the longest because of limited knowledge from devs about Cell/RSXSergeantSnitch

Agreed. From all indications the PS3 hardware is more trouble than it's worth if you don't have the sales behind it. That said, developers can only gain familiarity by working with the architecture.

4) On the software side of things, not only does the PS3 have the least amount of games, it also has the lowest software sales as well. PS3 owners aren't buying enough games.SergeantSnitch

Well, yea, it kinda follows that a lower install base would mean fewer games sold.

HOME? ¿Donde esta home?SergeantSnitch

A lot of games this generation have seen delays, on the PS3/360/Wii/PC. It comes with the rising cost of development and the added complexity of the software.

What makes it worse is that some these games are also being CANNED altogether on the PS3 and are completely gone.SergeantSnitch

Unrealistic expectations. I don't think anybody expects Nintendo and Microsoft to roll over like they did last generation and allow the PS2 to dominate, and it's a good thing for the industry to have closer competitors, not to mention that the cost of development is too high in most cases to allow exclusivity.

7) Multiplats are generally worse than the 360, a system that is cheaper to begin with.

8 ) Multiplats also release much later on the PS3 because of difficulty porting the game and budget constraints.SergeantSnitch

Agreed, it goes with the lack of familiarity and difficulty of development.

9) While PSN is showing improvement, it cannot hold a light to XBOX LIVE. Looks like PS3 owners have to wait till next year for Home as well.SergeantSnitch

Software networking is one thing that Microsoft brings to the console world which they really hold an advantage in over their competitors, as evident by the growing-but-not-quite-there PSN and the non-existent Wii network. I'd say it's more that MS is great here, not that Sony has "failed".

I think people will be buying the 40Gb version thinking it has PS2 BC.SergeantSnitch

Really? Either you're giving the customer too little credit (they can read and ask questions, you know) or too much (they wouldn't really care what was in each SKU beyond the core functionality). Does anybody have any empirical evidence that having multiple SKU's for either Sony or Microsoft has been confusing, or is this all just pull-out-of-the-butt spectulation?

11) Sony's decision to include Blu-Ray in the PS3 as standard is one of the riskest moves they could have ever pulled. Part of the reason why I think the PSP has faultered is the whole UMD issue. Didn't Sony learn from BetaMax, UMD, and MiniDisc? Blu-Ray and HD-DVD aren't catching on because there isn't a big enough difference to justify the added cost. VHS to DVD was truly a revolution, not DVD to Blu-Ray.SergeantSnitch

PSP hasn't "faltered", they've sold half has many as DS's around the world, which is quite impressive given all the other companies who've tried to dethrone Nintendo from handheld gaming in the past. People love to point out Sony's failed media attempts, but they also conveniently forget that they had a huge hand in promoting CD's and DVD's as well. Sony's strategy is media formats, and it's much too early to say whether the format has failed or whether it will cripple the PS3.

Capcom has abandoned Sony, Ubiosoft isn't too happy...SergeantSnitch

Again, completely unrealistic expectations. Six months into development, people are working on getting the underlying engine and pitching proof-of-concept ideas around, not announcing to the press that they have a killer idea but it'll take 2 1/2 years to realize it (any that do either have a proven track record, which means they've already announced a game, or they're just blowing a lot of hot air).

Really, people are having these illusions of grandeur about what Sony should do this generation and are setting themselves up for disappointment (some happily, I may add) when Sony shows they cannot dominate like they did last generation, and we're just talking about the first year and a half (averaging the release dates of all consoles) out of a 5-6 year cycle.

A good read doesn't necessarily have to be written by an industry insider. Secondly, I'm not a fanboy. Please show me where I came off as being a fanboy in my post, I want quotes.

SergeantSnitch

It don't work that way buddy....you didn't use any quotes when you made your original "arguments". If you are not able back yourself up with some quotes or evidence of your own then you can not expect anyone to dig up "quotes" to refute unsubstantiated statements.

The Arguments against Sony are a never-ending spiral of FAIL.

It's not that the PS3 is the biggest failure, it's just that the failure is coming from one of the biggest giants to ever hit gaming. In the scope of the fact they DOMINATED two generations consecutivly and then produce and abomination is what's so difficult to grasp. The combination of an easy target and some type of odd fetish for kicking the big dog with the rifle to its head is what produces these threads.

You shouldn't say sony is in trouble at the begining of your post, but keep it with PS3 in particular.

Game industry they have not just the PS3 but the PSP and PS2 is still around.

M$ 360 and the ... thats it.

Wii and DS. Enuff said.

Not really a good read since most of the stuff you posted has been thought of and spoken on the SW thread through out the past weeks, the bad thing though is sony seems to be failing left and right and to me it seems their not even trying to get back on the bandwagon.

sony screwed up big time, but the PS3 still has one fighting chance left, and that's 2008. if they don't get it together by the end of next year, it's over.mwa

its honeymoon is def over, i had a ps3 and got rid of it because there was nothing to play and i can careless about bluray movies, dvds still look great, 360 all the way sorry i am a lemming
