For those that care, Transformers did outsell Spiderman 3 launch week:

http://www.dvdtown.com/news/spider-man-3-sells-good-on-dvd-and-blu-ray/4903

[QUOTE=""] The numbers for the first week are in. Spider-man 3 did good but falls short of Transformers both in HD and on DVD.

"Spider-man 3" becomes the best selling Blu-ray title with 130,000 copies sold in the first six days. "Transformers" did 190,000 units on HD DVD in the same timeframe. Some have speculated that the "Transformers" numbers are exaggerated but proof has not been presented and Paramount says that they have double checked the numbers.

On DVD Sony was more reluctant to reveal specific numbers but said that the standard DVD version sold 4 - 5 million copies. "Transformers" did 8.3 million on DVD.Dreams-Visions

Some have speculated that the "Transformers" numbers are exaggerated, but proof has not been presented and Paramount says that they have double checked the numbers.

Do you have a point in there somewhere? Or is your cunning plan to cling to proofless speculation in the face of Paramount's double-checking the numbers?

Throw me a bone.

it says no proof has not been presented

If Blu Ray loses to HD-DVD its will probably be over for PS3. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Sony using the Blu Ray format and marketing it as a Blu Ray player is the cause of the PS3 being in the position its at. I don't see how they didn't discern how risky this would be.

It says Paramount has double-checked the numbers {for accuracy and integrity}. What else do you need? Written affidavit?

It is what it is. Transformers outsold Spiderman 3 in week 1 sales despite a 20:1 BRD hardware advantage.

20:1!!!!!

Pause and absorb that for a moment.

It will be no more over for the PS3 than when UMD died. The format is still useful and will still be used. Hell, even Beta tape is used for professional broadcasting.

Formats don't go away. They just become niche. PS3 will not be affected by BRD winning or losing the format war in any way.

Teh PS3 will, however, be damaged if they can't get sales up this holiday season.

It is interesting that he would make public comments like this. There is obviously a little fear in his voice as he said that.

Someone said something like....all it would mean is that Sony would have to switch formats if they lost. That's all? That can't happen unless they were to switch and still keep making Blu-ray versions of games to support the "old" systems.

All they have to do is remove the feature that put them at such a huge cost disadvantage to begin with? That's all?

But then again, Sony has already showed that they put soaking their customers much higher than support for previous systems when they have slowly removed BC for PS2 from this generation of PS3.

So, I guess next a PS3 with no BC for PS3 Blu-Ray games. :D

They would continue to make Blu-Ray products and support that format. All Sony-owned movie houses would.

Sony still makes Beta tapes, MiniDiscs and other stuff. The formats don't disappear...they just become reduced in role.

blu-ray isn't owned by sony guys, sony only owns most of the pressing plants, blu-ray is owned by a lot of companies (it's a joint venture between Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sony, and Thomson) and they have most of the studios for exclusive title releases... HD-DVD is pretty much just toshiba, the $100 HD-DVD players are mark-downs to get rid of current player stocks so they can release the new model (and to flood the market with hd-dvd players), new ones won't be $100... so if you're planning on going HD-DVD go now because the prices will go back up to $300-$400 per player,beavisofcod2

You're missing the point. At $100 the older HD DVD models will fly off the shelves. I guarentee that at least one (more realistically 2-3) HD DVD movies will be purchased for every player on average. This will do two things.

1.It will greatly increase HD DVD sales. Unlike the PS3, standalone HD DVD players serve one purpose only, to play HD DVD movies. All these new owners are going to want a list of quality movies on their shelves to show off their new toy to their friends. This could greatly diminish, if not completely nullify, any advantage BR movies currently enjoy in sales.

2. The boom in HD DVD movie sales will in all likelyhood have a significant effect on the movie studios who, after all, exist to make a buck in the first place. Like any good business they will follow the money and any exclusive deals on the table will surely be seriouslyrethought after any contracts are up.

Finally, the purchase of all these players will line the HD DVDplayer manufacturers pockets with needed income to further reduce costs on future players. This, if HD DVD players are significant enough, could start a cascade effect sending HD DVD player prices on a downward spiral while keeping up the profits made from said sales.

Personally, I just want the stupid HD format war to be over so movie sales will increaseenough forprices to come down. Paying more then $20 for a movie just sucks.

Oh, and you can already find the HD A20 model for sub $300.

Yeah, Beta copies of current movies are really easy to find. I'm sure retailers will keep stocking a failed product (if it does fail, which obviously insn't a foregone conclusion, but we are playing what-if here).

I don't see any way someone could fail to agree that if Blu-ray gets relagated to the flea market with Laserdisc and Beta tapes that that's not a really loud death knell for the PS3 this gen.

I think they'd be stupid to try and retool a PS3 for HD-DVD. They might as well just launch a whole new system. They could even start out with full PS3 BC and then pull it out when people complain about the price.

Actual movements of the HD-A2 deal last Friday is estimated to be 90k, not 100k. The $199 deal for the A3 also went back up to $299.
