the money went into funding the ps3 and the reason why sony's net income is so low is that the games devision ie SCEI has so much operating losses that the barely have a large net profit

I meant to say shareholders so from the numbers, Sony is worth more than M$ this is probably because they are in most markets with not just the playstation but regular products

microsoft has more money. sony sells all those things but theres a greater variety of things to pick up in each catergory. microsoft pwns the OS industry and software industry... not to mention the 360 is doing well.

I I believe that Sony is not worth as much as Microsoft. On the other hand just because they have windows mean they are the richest. I thinkl that the oil companys and the banks like citi and chase have the most money right now.

I'm not looking at it from an asset perspective. I'm looking at it from a market value perspective. Sony is worth more than MS if you only count assets. Reading would be nice, you know?

Either way, you're wrong. MSFT stock is at $29.4 USD, with a stock volume of 55,551,296. SONY has it's stocks at $51.99 USD, but with a stock volume of 1,639,397. So MS absolutely obliterates Sony under your criteria.

Not to mention, stock worth is hardly the best comparison of company worth. I find market value to be a much better representation, since stocks are heavily affected by investor confidence, not only actual company value.

Latest figures Sony made $1,058 million (ie, a little over 1 billion) in 2006 according to Money Central.

Microsoft made $12.6 billion. Yeah....

I assume Sony's costs were R&D for PS3 and Blu-ray, as well as that laptop battery fiasco, but it all meant that they are in fact not richer than Microsoft.

This is correct, but I feel a clarification is needed:

Most of Gates' money is in the form of Microsoft Stock. If MS goes down in flames, so does Bill Gates. Of course, he has his house and most certainly a fund that would keep him a millionarie, but his finances would be greatly, greatly affected. It's not like he has billions and billions under his mattress.

Don't you know that MS gets a cut off of ALL computers bearing windows, wow, you are quite ignorant. MS is BY FAR richer than Sony. Do you have any clue how much they make off computers, just image HOW many computers have windows.....almost EVERY school system, and how many people own SOny TV's? MS has no real competition.

The problems with Blu-Ray have created extreme cost and execution problems for Sony and now their premier division (instead of being the profit center for Sony) is predicting they will take a $1.5B loss next year largely resulting from this decision. To put this in perspective, just think what would happen if Apple’s iPod group, instead of generating massive profit, suddenly dropped into massive loss. Now you can see why the Sony PlayStation division just changed out their top executives.

Although Sony might be bigger than MS, I wouldn't be surprised if MS bought SCEA (Not Sony, just SCEA).......right before the NEXT gen of consoles.
Right now, Microsoft is measuring profit in billions, Sony in tens of millions (both US dollars).---All due to PS3 dragging the rest of Sony's profits way down. Microsoft wants "in" the Japanese game market. They can't see to get in by themselves. Wouldn't surprise me at all for them to try to "buy in" to that market. Buying SCEA would go a long way......

hahahahaha, never gonna happen, never. just think about there are more playstation 2's out there than ipods. believe it. and sony company value wise is worth more than sony, but not in spending wise. because companies like microsoft just waste your money on the same thing over and over again. no new inovations. Windows have looked the same, just more 3d. and if you make fun of sony for saying 4d, i wouldnt be surprised if they make 4d windows lol.

look. Sony makes cameras, tvs, the best selling consoles, the best selling games, cards, computer, they do it all.

MS only has and OS that no one cares about cause they have linux on their PS3, or mac for personal use, and an XBOX which doesn't make any profit.

I hate fanboys who think Sony is in debt and such, they have so many things to fal l back on, spider-man 3 anyone? Columbia records anyone?
