A lot of people are going to be really underwhelmed next gen, especially Lemmings. I have a feeling it's going to look like this in terms of power, strongest to weakest: Next PlayStation Wii U Next XboxActionRemix

Find it hard to believe that the Wii-U can be more powerful than the next box when the 360/PS3 do not seem to be that far behind the Wii U. PS4/Nextbox will be more powerful.

On topic: Guess we could see the PS4 in late 2013. I am still not sure about the next box coming out next year because of Halo 4 being out for the 360, unless they pull a twilight princess. My guess is that it will come in Early 2013.

I'm excited about next-gen.

I won't be buying into next Gen for a while. I have many current Gen titles still to play, and I have no problem when it comes to graphics. We've come along way from my brothers pong, and I still dig and play PS one games as well as PS two and Xbox.

i still play spectrum games and a lot of old pc classics and Psone games like fear effect 2, i won't be getting a next gen console till i run out of games to play on my 360 and i still have a backlog of games i want to play as well, graphics are not an issue for me either, it's about how much fun a game is and games like skool daze and last ninja are still a huge amount of fun to play.

Wii U is five times as powerful as the 360/PS3 and it looks like the next Xbox will have what might as well be a smartphone graphics chip. They want to reduce the size and cost of their console. They want to tap into that casual gold because the hardcore are not worth the investment.

As soon as Nintendo announced a 2012 launch everyone knew the PS4 and the 720 would be out in 2012. It can't NOT happen. They aren't giving Nintendo the advantage and Sony and MS will launch right next to eachother.

Mario1331

Sony and MS don't even look at Ninendo as a direct competitor anymore. They don't care if the Wii U comes out 2012 because they already know only Nintendo die-hards will buy it, it will get little third party support, and won't be able to compete graphically with their own new generation of consoles.

I promise you, Sony and MS are mostly worried about each other. Nintendo's Wii U barely factors into their decision.

nintendo sold the most consoels this gen....they are really worried about them

The Wii was cheap and different, that's why it sold the most this gen.

If Nintendo made the Wii an HD console with only a normal gamepad at the same price as the competition, they would have gotten stomped like they did last gen.

They smartened up. What they're doing with the Wii U is what they did with the Wii, making a console that's "different" and for mostly casuals.

Unless every console is somewhat equal in power next gen like how PS2/GCN/Xbox were, then MS and Sony won't see the Wii U as direct competition.

I think the XBox 720 will be the most powerful, best-selling console next gen. The hype for the Wii U, the only next gen console with a release date announced, is relatively low; I don't really hear much about ppl except for die-hard Nintendo fans hyped for the console. The hype for the PS4 and XBox 720 is undetermined at this point as little information has been released about either system in development, and it's not enough to generate hype. I think it's safe to predict that the 720 would be on top at least. I don't really know where the PS4 would fall. I do feel that people would be more interested in a new XBox console rather than a Playstation at this point. MS expanded its marketshare this gen and is mostly likely going to expand even further next gen. Sony and Nintendo have both lost profit(Sony mostly), and Sony has also lost the loyalty of its consumers with the hacking fiasco. Likewise, Nintendo's gimmicks as of late seem to be losing their effect on the public as the 3DS has been having trouble selling. It seems like MS will move forward with its monopolization of the industry. Next gen, it will get more third-party support(prob a bit more than Sony if not more). MS has made lots of money to power-up their new console. It prob won't be a significant evolution though, as MS and Sony would want to keep their consoles cheap and competitively priced. Sony is faring better in sales as of now, and they may be able to use that to their advantage to generate more revenue next gen, to dig themselves out of the deep hole they've dug themselves into this gen. I probably won't buy a next-gen console for a while though. There's alot of games to keep me occupied for quite a while.

PS3 has all the momentum in the world right now (world widr) and is on the verge of passing up the 360. So there is that oppurtunity to ride that sky high momentum all the way up to the launch of the PS4 and make it a monumental launch for gaming. I think Sony is in the best position right now , and would be heading into next gen, if they continue to play their cards right. Every body and there Grandma is excitied to see what the PS4 will bring hot off the heals of one of the greatest consoles ever in the PS3, and which is also at an all time high in momentum. I just wish Sony all the best in no matter what they decide to do. I'm sure they are looking at differet options and will settle with what's best for us and them

Also to add to the info "According to some sources, Ubisoft Montreal is already developing content for the Xbox 360 successor using "target boxes" that are designed to emulate the system's intended specs. The same source also said that they expect to receive the first genuine dev kit before Christmas. Those target boxes are said to be PCs that contain off the shelf components as well as GPUs from AMD to closely emulate the system . There are also reports that other developers such as EA are also in obsession of target boxes. Also revealed with absolute confidence that one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development entirely, shifting its focus to developing content for its successor. It is reasonable that Microsoft and Sony don't want to give Nintendo's Wii U a considerable head start,"

For the ones who believe or want to believe that next set of consoles will be powerhouses that will out pace current medium-high ended gaming Pc's are going to be disappointed. Sony and MS are not doing a 360 or PS3 thing again a $400 console will be worth $400 not $600 they are not going to sell them at a lost and wait 3 years after the fact before making a profit.

04dcarraher

I'd donate this hermit a brain surgery, next gen console just out pace current medium high end pc?? keep kidding yourself, there's no question that either next gen console will crap out 2012 top end PC with ease for at least a year, even Wii-U is comparable to current middle-high end PC's

what's even more laughable is your none sense price analogy, forgot something? the price of xbox1? $299, by launch time it wasn't as powerful as a high end PC back then, the price of xbox360? still $299, not only it stomp any high end PCs in its time for a good 2 years. but it still keeping up with nearly all the up to the date games with respectful graphic, if next xbox or ps is anywhere near $400 with upgradable options? sounds like PC gaming is finished once for all.

truth is, only hermits will be disappointed at next gen console's spec, for next gen console will make your puny pc rig or any high end rig have no ground to stand in the end of 2012, you might as well desperated to a a point to even commit suicide

P.s I do agree that the big head start for Microsoft was a BIG advantage. And I agree that Sony should not give them an opportunity like that again BUT and this is a huge but I think Sony should still and try to take their time to ensure a proper successor to the PS3 with great graphical capabilities. And that Sony should give it the time that they NEED to ensure a smooth launch with quailty exclusive games available and to give it the time they need to ensure that there is a sturdy supply of quality titles made available aftet launch All that stuff takes time and cant be rushed. I just want a quailty system and not an after thought of a system like with what the next xbox seems to be in order so that it can release right away. And I know Sony can and will deliever. The PS3 is one of the all time greatest consoles ever. It deserves a proper successor but this time a successor that launches with out making the same mistakes that the PS3 made. And a successor that learns from all of the mistakes of this gen and improves

**** nintendo and microsoft for rushing this and next gen's launches. talk about being a detriment to console technology and gaming as a whole

MuayThaiFTW

THIS. Honestly, I'm still very happy with my PS3. I would have liked a proper successor to one of my all time favorite consoles ever in the PS3, but Ninentdo and Microsoft are rushing into the next generation, and forcing Sony to as well, which is going to limit potential and technology

6 years is rushing it? maybe 8 on MS's part if they don't release the next one until 2013?

no one has to wait around for Sony to announce their plans. Sony does not set some standard for how a console should be released compared to another.

but whatever, it's not like their other 2 systems didn't launch before anyone else or had a 6 year span between them. oh...wait.

I'm not buying any of the next gen consoles until they have been out long enough to have a decent library. I bought my PS3 about 9 months after launch and I literally had nothing to play

BPoole96
LMAO!! That's why I waited 18 months to buy a PS3. I waited 2 years to buy a PS2. I'm not buying any new consoles at launch next gen. Sony can wait another 3-4 years if they want. I doubt Sony wants to play catch up again next-gen. I'm pretty sure their system is not ready yet. 2013 would be the best time to launch, but we'll see what happens.

agreed I'm still happy with my PS3 myself lol I'm also talking about the real world and not internet forums and of course what i said isnt meant to be taken literal. I'm exaggerating a little. But I'm not like the guy that posted above me speaking as if everything I say is a fact A ton of my friends and cousins, some that aren't even in to gaming like you or I, have been looking forward to what's after the PS3. And of course that's just my experience. But I guarantee you that a lot of people are looking to.what Sony is going to.do.seeing as how they have all the momentum right now

there are too many reasons for Sony to wait... (I will discuss MS in another post)

  1. PS2 outsold PS3 and Xbox 360 for a while after they launched
  2. PS3 sales are now picking up as the pricehasdroped and more games are coming out, and a there is a huge library.
  3. Sony did not make a bunch of money like they did with the PS2.
  4. Sony lost a lot of money at the begging only to sell a lot less than the PS2 did. Sony can not keep up with MS in spending money on a new console.
  5. Sony would need to use the cell and inexpensive GPU (leaving out everyone except Intell and that is only if Intell wants to be in consoles bad enough to give it away free)
    • because using anything elsewould raise the cost too much like with PS3
    • but also not increase the power so much that it would blow away this gen of consoles. (like high end PC games now look A LOT BETTER YES, but not like comparing Hexen (on PSX) to God of war on PS2! It will be more like comparing Halo 2 to Halo 3!!
  6. BY waiting it allows Sony to have better tech at a lower price than the compatition.
    • (EX. had Sony waited a year for launching the PS3 the componets would have been cheaper
      • Bluray parts
      • cell size and cost for the heat displacement
      • number of cells per chip sheet
    • Sony could have used all 8SPUs instead of 7 SPUs
    • Higher Bluray speed at least 4X making load times non existent
    • better intergration of HDMI 1.3a or HDMI 4.0

Thus by waiting Sony could launch with a better console at a good price instead of cutting edge technology that costa lot of money, and becomes old really fast.

Well said^. But they can all benefit from waiting until tech is cheaper, but the tech used at that time isn't cutting edge and forum dwellers will blast them for that. There is very little these companies can do to please the gaming enthusiasts like us when it comes to console hardware specs it seems. I am thankful that I am more than pleased with the way games look right now. I won't be jumping to new consoles for a few years, regardless of what's out.

Well if we go by the unconfirmed specs. It suppose to be using a modern IBM tri or quad core cpu which means with MIPS performance not GFLOPS, it should be at least 4x faster then PS3 in that respect. Then its supoose to have 512mb of system memory which is 2x the amount of what either the 360/PS3 has. Then is suppose to have 1gb of video memory which is 4x the amount used by both 360/PS3. Then it also suppose to use the R700 based chipset which are the upper based AMD 4800's which the 4850 is almost 4x faster then 360 gpu and 5x then PS3's gpu. The 4870 is 5-6x faster. So overall it should be at the very least 4x faster.

I don't see why exactly. The PS loyalists will hold out for the system either way, and it would likely wipe out everything on the market graphically if it released a year or two later, which is always appealing.

How that translate into that.? But i don't see a problem with that the PS brand has never ever been the first to the market, the PS3 has done badly because of its price, the DC was release on nov 2008,the PS2 in march 2000,more than 1 year latter and still the PS2 beat it,is nothing basically sure MS can get a few games first, but if sony play their card right with the price the outcome will be much different.

this is true, it was the saturn before the Ps1 and the dreamcast before the Ps2, but it wasn't just the price that hurt SONY early on this gen, in the beginning a lot of third party developers either refused to put there games on the Ps3 or bought them out later because of the extra dev time they needed due to the completely non traditional architecture, they have learned to use it now but if SONY pushes alien architecture again it will be a repeat cycle, if they release at a reasonable price with dev friendly hardware then they will satnd a good chance of hammering MS next gen.
