Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Europe's Senior Vice President, Michael Denny, believes that original games are hugely important in today's games industry.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Liverpool this morning, Denny said: "We must support new IP creation to survive as an industry. Consumers crave new things. If we want to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive marketplace, we need to promote new ideas."

"New IP truly is the lifeblood of the industry," he continued.

Denny cited Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain, which we previewed yesterday, as an example of a high-quality, innovative idea on Sony's publishing schedule.

In his talk about what Sony looks for when working with independent development houses, Denny said: "We try not to be too prescriptive. Clearly, issuing guidelines is a good thing, but we always want to leave room for disruptive titles."

He said that the key factors in a successful pitch to the company are a good idea, a good knowledge of business and a strong team delivering the content.

But "there's one key ingredient" to ultimate success, he said, "and that's passion."

I agree.

Gamers need fresh new games every so often.

I disagree with this. 90% of new IPs fail. This is why they make sequels. Less risk. More reward. Sequels are what actually propel this industry forward (in terms of growth and profit) whether you agree with it or not.

Its a given that if only sequels remain. Creativity would languish and the industry will become stagnant. That's just common sense.

I agree as well. I like new IPs. When an awesome company makes a bad game, we know sequels mostly suck as well, but when they have a fresh new IP, we can sense major progression.

That Sony, with their crazy new ideas. What they should be doing is churning out homogenized crap every year so that I could spend the exact same dollar amount. Do you buy Sony games? If not, you should.

That's not propelling it forward. Thats stagnating and being fine with it. On top of that without pushing new IPs there would be no sequels anyway... Sony is right in this case. New IPs are a good thing

uh no they dont, they acctually stay safe meaning they dont open new concepts, thus you would never see games like LBP and scribblenauts.

I agree. Sadly, we live in a generation filled to the brim with sequels. New IPs are always better though IMO. Assassin's Creed, Borderlands, Mass Effect, Demon's Souls. All better than our mainstream sequels.

Yes but without those new IPs we would only be playing one game, the industry can't survive on just one game. Obviously not every game can turn into a successful franchise like COD, Halo, Uncharted, or Mario. New IPs are the lifeblood of the industry because they are the games that drive the industry rather than keep it in place.

This only applies to this generation and specifically the wii. Back in the PS1 and PS2 days, new IPs flourished. Hence the birth of the lemming's beloved halo and fable, and we had our ratchet and clank, jak and daxter, and gta(not exactly new IP, but GTA3 was completely different from gta1 and gta2).

bphan

80% Of statistics are made up

Though I see where you are coming from, I have a few criticisms:

Yes, and this can't be applied to new IPs? More risk =/= low reward nor does less risk= more reward. And what kind of reward? Financial reward? Because I don't see why you would argue for sales/profit of a company, I care only about what I get.

If I disagree it does not make your statement true regardless. Your claim is not a fact. Sequels do not always drive the industry forward. What they do usually do is drive the game forward. Take Uncharted for example. And why isn't the same true for new IPs? LittleBigPlanet pushed PlayCreateShare. New IPs have the potential to bring in new audiences, and expand the market. Sure, it's the same with sequels-- Modern Warfare is a sequel that really blew in the stratosphere of popularity, but I see no reason for you to disagree with the idea that new IPs are the lifeblood of the industry.

Older games are reliable in so far as they can make any successful franchise a quick profit. But I do not think that they should be considered the lifeblood. New IPs turn to sequels and new IPs have the advantage of being fresh, experimental, etc. Sequels are great, but new blood in the form of IP is just the sort of generational jumpstart every console needs.

So I suppose that new IPs are the new blood and the lifeblood of the future. But sequels are simply reliable and lifeblood for a quick profit. The question is, to who does this lifeblood benefit? Gamers or Developers?

do you own stock in these companies? Seriously.. we are all "Supposed" to be gamers on this forum.. but the occasional sales guy pops in and they act like that is be all end all.. have fun with your sales of rehash # 5. Gamers want new ips and seqeuals, but system makers should be making new ip to make their systems stand out from the crowd.

The reason Sony is doing so bad is because it only has new IPs. inFamous and Uncharted are incredible games, but people never played them on the PS2, why would you buy a PS3 for either of those games, you could be sadly mistaken! If Sony put out a solid Jak game in 07 I can GUARENTEE they would be in a much better position right now.

The only reason Sony can't keep it together now is because they didn't have those games people were looking for. I bought my PS3 for Ratchet and Clank and I can tell you that I would not have bought a PS3 now or ever, if not for Ratchet and Clank.

This is why I prefer Sony. They are always introducing new types of games to play rather than just just making sequels again, and again, and again, and again, and.... again

oh you mean 2006=GeoW 2007=Halo 3 2008=GeoW2 2009=ODST 2010=Reach? just guessing.

lol close but it was Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo Reach. It will be even longer since they said Halo will go until 2014 or something like that

and to think Halo Legends will be out in Bluray. oh noes, what about those kids who bought the overpriced HD-DVD add-on for their 360 to make it look kewl?!?!?!?

The reason Sony is doing so bad is because it only has new IPs. inFamous and Uncharted are incredible games, but people never played them on the PS2, why would you buy a PS3 for either of those games, you could be sadly mistaken! If Sony put out a solid Jak game in 07 I can GUARENTEE they would be in a much better position right now.

The only reason Sony can't keep it together now is because they didn't have those games people were looking for. I bought my PS3 for Ratchet and Clank and I can tell you that I would not have bought a PS3 now or ever, if not for Ratchet and Clank.

I completely disagree with this. Sony did poorly for so many other reasons. I think in fact the new IPs are actually what sustained interest in it. Where else you are wrong is that Sony got huge leverage from MGS4's release and is planning on GoW3 and GT5 to be huge system sellers.

nah more like Ratchet, Uncharted, Resistance, Ratchet, Uncharted, Resistance

Resistance and Uncharted were both new IPs of this gen that have been successful

lol this is where the rumored Blu-Ray add on comes in to the 360. MS knows if they release a Halo Blu Ray all the Halo-Heads will flock out and buy it. Milking at its finest!!!

About half of my purchases are new IPs, so yes they're pretty important to me.
