I agree , I love Halo , Final Fantasy and Metal Gear . All AAA but I dont think any of them thrilled me as much as for Example Dead Space. something new fresh unexpected . I so want to play Crysis because I expect it to be on that level too. I applaud Sony honestly, I think they are by far striving more than any First party for new IPs

I disagree with this. 90% of new IPs fail. This is why they make sequels. Less risk. More reward. Sequels are what actually propel this industry forward (in terms of growth and profit) whether you agree with it or not.

Its a given that if only sequels remain. Creativity would languish and the industry will become stagnant. That's just common sense.

Wait, that maybe Nintendo's way of thinking but it's not the truth. Look at Gears of War and Uncharted for instance, both MS and Sony took a chance on these new IP's and it's paid off. Now they both have successful sequels but if they weren't made andinstead made another Halo or MGS game......you're saying we would be better off?

Wrong... and where do you get your stats... sequels are mainly a safe zone and keep the industry from a stand still not to move it forward. New IPs is whats needed for continual growth... "whether you agree withit or not".

He's right, of course. Think about what would happen if the only games that ever appeared were sequels to old ones. It'd get old pretty fast, wouldn't it? I for one am really looking forward to playing Heavy Rain, a game with a seemingly solid narrative and one that has the balls to try something reasonably new.

I agree 100%. It is true that most of the new IP's fail. It can sometimes be a gamble to release a new game when it has to compete with sequels (even if some of those sequels are garbage). There has been a lot of great new IP's for this current generation and Sony, has done an excellent job showing how important new IP's are to the industry.

I agree. Sequels are also nice tough. Especialy if a game has a exelnt story, or untapped potential (Assasins Creed, Borderlands, Uncharted 1 etc.)

But milking it like CoD is a little over the top. I mean COD is like the freaking anual sport games. Our anual generic FPS... :D

Exactly, using the spreadsheet here 5 from 8 AAA 360 games which are shooters while only 2 from the 7 AAA and above (MGS4 AAAA) in PS3.

This is why I prefer Sony. They are always introducing new types of games to play rather than just just making sequels again, and again, and again, and again, and.... again

oh you mean 2006=GeoW 2007=Halo 3 2008=GeoW2 2009=ODST 2010=Reach? just guessing.

nah more like Ratchet, Uncharted, Resistance, Ratchet, Uncharted, Resistance

That's funny because Uncharted and Resistance were new IPs

As usual a very intelligent and correct statement by Sony. Bring on the new IPs! Some old ones are great, too, but they cannot be milked to death!

Because he thinks Nintendo never make new IPs. That thinking is just false Nintendo make new IPs all the time. Since the N64 they had 26 New IPs on Consoles and around 55 New IPs for Handhelds in that same time 1996 - 2010 (I included Titles that are announced but not released yet.)

New IPs are awesome. But you have to admit, we can't have only new IPs. 80-85% sequel and the rest new IP is about the best ratio you can hope for, especially as costs rise, and the difficulty to create a successful new IP rises.

Well kudo's to NIN also, not only do they keep tried and true IP's fresh but they also create fresh new games also.

But what do they make sequels to? Games that were once new IPs. Without new IPs, the game industry would literally be nowhere. So i think they are essential :)

I completely agree. Part of why I think this generation is less than exciting is because of the lack of truly ORIGINAL IPs such as Brütal Legend, Dead Rising, No More Heroes, BioShock, Heavy Rain and so on. That isn't a factory made shooter with grey scale realistic graphics.

Both Microsoft and Sony have made great strides at making new franchises.

Microsoft - Crackdown, Viva Pinata, Kameo: Elements of Power, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon - All Decent new Franchises

Sony - Infamous, Folklore, Little Big Planet, Uncharted, and Resistence

Nintendo - Umm...none...Wii Fit?

Seriously if anyone should be pointing the finger it should be at Nintendo...and Activision. Even EA has made a ton of new Ips (Army of Two (underrated), Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Brutal Legend, and Bad Company)

Well Bad Company is still Battlefield, but your right. Nintendo are the culprits and I laugh at the fact that they are surprised that their core fans feel so cheated. And yes, even EA have made great strides. All Activision does is milk Guitar Hero.

Frankly I'm happy with Nintedo reviving older totles like punchout. No offense to Sony and Microsoft but they haven't a fraction of the amount of popular IPs nintendo is sitting on and with everyone on SW crying over not getting their favourite franchises I would say it puts them in a difficult spot. Even so they still have created there Wii_____ series, endless ocean, revived the friggin awesome sin and punishment IP, gave another ppunchout after so many years in the dark as well as creating the new IPs of Monado, Dynamic Slash, Cosmic Walker and spawn smasher getting ready to be released.

BS. Even Halo, Mass Effect, and Gears were a new IP at one point. You'd prefer we were playing Doom 6 on the 360 and Tenka 3 on the PS3? Someone took a chance and released something cool and unexpected, and it happened to click. Thank goodness you aren't the man at the switch at Sony.

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Europe's Senior Vice President, Michael Denny, believes that original games are hugely important in today's games industry.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Liverpool this morning, Denny said: "We must support new IP creation to survive as an industry. Consumers crave new things. If we want to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive marketplace, we need to promote new ideas."

"New IP truly is the lifeblood of the industry," he continued.

Denny cited Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain, which we previewed yesterday, as an example of a high-quality, innovative idea on Sony's publishing schedule.

In his talk about what Sony looks for when working with independent development houses, Denny said: "We try not to be too prescriptive. Clearly, issuing guidelines is a good thing, but we always want to leave room for disruptive titles."

He said that the key factors in a successful pitch to the company are a good idea, a good knowledge of business and a strong team delivering the content.

But "there's one key ingredient" to ultimate success, he said, "and that's passion."

It goes both ways, it seems. Activision wasn't exactly begging the guys at Infinity Ward to come up with a "new IP" after Modern Warfare. Same with movies -- look at how much money trash sequels like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen pulled in. Not saying that movie's like MW2 in terms of quality, just pointing out that sequels to proven moneymakers are actually the "lifeblood" of the industry. New IPs are just people testing the waters; when they find a new, unique idea that sells well, they'll rinse/repeat until people stop buying it.

well all rehashes start with a new IP so there goes anybodies sequels are the lifeblood argument. And its actually good to see sony turn around from an embarassing launch of the PS3, they were so arrogant that their brand name would sell the console and it didnt even have games. Now theyve learned some humility and are IMO the best publisher this gen.

Very true, Sony imo has the best new IPs this generation such as: Uncharted and LBP.
