Sony has toldKotakuthat there will not be a North American version of the UMD Passport program, which would allow PlayStation Vita users to transfer their PSP discs to the upcoming handheld.

Sony debuted the UMD Passport program in Japan last Decemberalongside the release of the Vita. Japanese gamers can insert their game discs into their PSPs, register them on their PlayStation Network accounts, and pay a small fee to re-download their games on the Vita.

Unless Sony changes its mind or announces some sort of alternative option, North American PSP owners will have no way to play their UMDs on the Vita, though they will be able to access any PSP games they purchased digitally.

I've asked Sony why it won't bring the UMD Passport program to North American customers and will update with any further news or explanation.Kotaku

Good going, Sony. Good going.

There's already a topic about this here:

http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/29015867/umd-games......stay-on-umds-and-not-on-vita

But I'll say here what I said on that thread:

Japan has a UMD Passport program, so why won't the U.S. have it?

This is a move done only out of sheer greed by Sony.

Huh, didn't see that. And as pissed as I am at Sony right now, I don't think it was done by greed. I think it was licensing issues, digital rights, legalities and the overall fact that SCEA doesn't give a sh*t about the PSP, that has led to this situation.

I assume they just don't care to set up such a programme. Who would want to buy a PSP remake on a VITA?! And they already did this in Japan...it doesn't make any sense. They are really setting up US the bomb.

I'm thinking it's mostly got to do with licencing, maybe they only managed to get licenses for the Japanese software, not the international versions. But still, WTF Sony... you guys used to be the best at backwards compatibility, from that to the massive clusterf*ck that was the PS3's backwards compatibility to this, the PS Vita... you guys need to step your game up.

Well that kinda like Sony giving the finger to NA gamers. Is there not going to be one for Europe too?

Hardly surprising, but seems like a missed opportunity to engender some good will towards a new system that could use anything that might get gamers to give it another look.

I wouldn't be so sure. SCEE generally treats the PSP much better than SCEA does.

This decision just seems so strange, especially when backwards compatibility of any kind is something that some purchasers would want. If its licesning that than really stinks for them, however if not than this decision just doesn't make any sense. Having it would only make them a little money due to the fees that are requried when users transfer their games.

Different regions have different laws, licenses and god knows what else.. It's not as simple as just flipping a switch, maybe because PSP was so huge in Japan that Sony would see a return on such an endeavor but in NA the PSP is dead, all the effort of having all the games available after all the laws, and the previously mentions "god knows what else" i guess Sony just don't see it a worthwhile investment of time, money and effort to have the same service available in NA. I still got my old PSP so i don't care if i have all my games on Vita either way.

Unfortunate, but I'm indifferent. I owned a PSP back when and have a few titles I wouldn't mind playing again, but nothing I'm dying over. The reason I own a superior platform isn't to play my old games but the new ones being developed specifically for it.

If they don't release the program in the US then I don't see the reason to buy the Vita early. I'll eventually buy it when a year has passed and the great games start rolling in.

I was thinking the same thing.

It's like they're trying to push people away from buying it at launch.

It was a stupid f*cking thing to begin with. You had to pay them to activate the PSP games anyway. Now they're just gonna sell them for a little bit more money. Oh well, its not like I was gonna buy the overpriced PSV anyway.

Basinboy

but what about this, the ds has many excellent games that came out and when the ds is discontinued how else will you play the ds games you missed? with the 3ds since it will still be selling and healthy.

BC is a really good thing for consumers.

i think sony dropped the ball here

Lame. I mean, I'd love to be able to have my Dissidia games on my Vita (well Dueodecim) just to finally have my games on a system and not worry about cards. It's perhaps not the biggest deal breaker though, because I can play my PSP if I wanted to, but it sucks because it's something already available. There's no need to really go any extra mile and do it, just the reason it isn't coming is because Sony doesn't want it to. :/

Japan is roughly the size of CA and it would be much easier to implement something like this over there. Putting Kiosks all over the United States just probably isn't worth it. Especially when most US PSP owners probably don't actually buy their games.

Sony perhaps wishes to remake some games, or "port" over some PSP games in order to rake in on the monies.

if you wanna play your games so bad get a psp, i downloaded most of my games from the psn store and i wanna download all my vita games online, so i'm not tripping on it but of course people who have no interest in the vita will take this chance to take shots at it.

Not really. I own nearly 100 PSP games and I will be picking up a Vita.

I am just not trading in my PSP in the very slim chance I want to go back and play some of the older games. Chances are I will be to busy with Vita games with the little time I get to play games to ever go back.

I have a BC PS3 and have only ever played 2 of the 50+ PS2 games I own on it in the 5 years I have had the system.

I buy new systems to play new games, not to play older games.

How much time do you have to be switching between 3 handhelds at all times? Just pick 1 for a day. Pick a different one another day.

oh please, do you still carry around your psp? There have been no new releases on the psp for a good 2 years, apart from rpg's here and there. I have a pretty big psp game collection, games i already beat and if i feel like playing them i will just start up my psp, i don't see how this is a big deal. Basically its a dumb reason for people to get out their pitch forks, I like chilling on my couch and playing my psp, you don't need to take it everywhere with you, you know....

Look, like I said in one of my first posts in this thread, I understand where Sony is coming from. As a corporation, they're doing the best they can with an inherently messy situation. However, just think of the core functionality of a handheld. Say I'm going out of town for a week. Now not only do I have to pack a 3DS and a Vita, I also have to pack in a PSP. That's way too much space being dedicated to gaming handhelds. I just hope the PSP3 will have full backwards compatibility, that's all.

Yeah, it's my second favorite system this generation. There have been tons of great games released on the PSP in the last two years, if you know where to look for them.
