It looks like Sony is becoming desperate since last month suppose to have record low sales. I saw this story on gamersreports website today:

Our source at Gamestop has come through for us again, folks. We know how this sounds, but trust us, we have the documents to back it up. Apparently, Sony is currently running a behind-the-scenes contest with Gamestop that is resulting in employees pushign the Sony console on consumers. The contest works as follows.

Sony assigns a target sales number for each Gamestop store. These numbers are rached by looking at the PS3 average sales numbers from April of this year. The store manager in each district that sells the most PS3 units above the Sony assigned goal will be recognized as the winner. The manager who wins is then awarded 20,000 points to use on the Sony/Gamestop rewards website (http://www.gamestoprewardstop.com/projects/00105/index.php). On top of that, the manager of the number one store in the entire company wins an additional 10,000 points. Since we cannot access the reqard site, we cannot tell just how much junk 30,000 points can buy, but we expect it is a decent amount. If anyone has any more info on this scheme, let us know. In the meantime, you can read it for yourself by clicking the link.

And you don't think MS wouldn't do something like this?

Newsflash, it's a sad state of affairs but you must give incentives for employees to do their job these days.  I purchase over 100k in dvd sale thru each month......you can tell when my distributor rep is getting incentives to push a certain title.  It's annoying but I understand why both the stuido and rep do it.  It's a business.  Why is this news?  Because the gamestop stores aren't pushing X360's anymore?

I usually just say no before they even try to sell me whatever they're selling.

Occasionally I will rescind my no, but not often.

If I was working for Gamestop and someone who is not interested in blu ray movies asked about a new console, I would suggest the 360 also. Maybe you would prefer they recommend a PS3 and tell the customer "it has potential."

They need to bribe the entire staff not just the managers. Every time you walk into a Gamestop the majority of the employees advise you not to buy a PS3.

If it's true, i think it reeks of desperation....

one would think you wouldn't need to resort to this with "100 million loyal ps2 owners"...

That is what I am saying. The console is fairly new and usually new consoles sell themselves but not the PS3. It's an overpriced Blu-Ray player / console. Most people are only interested in the console side so $600 for a console is just too much.

Well as long as you are going to bring up not being intrested in blu ray movies......what if they are intrested in playing their console past a year?  Maybe you would prefer they recommend an X360 and tell the customer "it might work after playing it for a year".

I'm not sure what BluRay has anything to do with this.  Gamestop pushed X360's back when there were no games out for it.  Now SOE is asking they do the same for PS3 and are willing to pay incentives........it's really up to the customer to say not intrested.  The only reason you are upset is because this might help PS3 (not by much though)

I had my 360 since launch without a single issue. Not all of them have problems but if that is a worry their is always a warranty and Gamestop always pushes their in store warranty.  Where did I say I was upset? I simply found it interesting so don't confuse yourself.

The rewards incentive is a sign of desperation and should be considered a bribe. They are basically bribing GS employees to push their system and not the other consoles.

Gamestop rewards the workers for selling extended warrenties, so in this case for the workers at least, the 360 is still the better system to push. Add to that the profit margin for selling used games and it is in Gamespots best interest to sell more 360s. Go to any Gamespot and look at the difference in the used 360 section vs. the used PS3 section. Crazy game attach rates for the 360 = piles of traded in 360 titles in which Gstop has a profit margin of 50% and up.

They're bribing the biggest chain in the U.S and it still can't compete against the Wii and 360. That is desperation.

This fall I'm predicting a blow out on PS3's. With one unit to purchase everyone and their brother is gonna be scrambling to get one with all the new games out...that and with haze looking better than Halo 3 with that new video I'd say it's gonna be worth paying Gamestop employees to reserve em! :P

You do realize a console that cost 600 is selling just as well as a console that cost 300 right? Check out the VG charts or any other charts...PS3 is selling at the same rate as 360...just without the year sales lead.

With a $600.00+ price tag that will never happen. Come on you really think people are so desperate that they will drop $600 for a game  with no following? It's not a sequelso it has no fan base.

Ports have not been working well for PS3 but I expect it to be different on the 360. Virtua Fighter 5 is said to look much better on the 360.

Like I said, they're bribing the biggest chain in the U.S to get a few extra sales, and it's still not competing with the likes of the Wii and the Xbox 360. It's shameful about the Xbox 360 as well - that's in about 6 million U.S homes - how many more can it sell?

Well it's a realistic possibility.

If I own a PS3 this fall as an owner I get this.

Little Big Planet

Rachet and Clank

Home

Warhawk

Heavenly Sword

Lair

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

Haze

Killzone 2

and as I get these game exclusviely I can add some juicy multiplats like the HL2 bundle, Unreal 3, CoD4, MoH Airborne, and some already existing titles like Motorstorm, Oblivion, and Resistance. Plus some more titles from the arcade store like Flow, MK II, Joust, Calling all cars, PAIN, and many more.

By the time I'm done playing these fun game MGS4, FF XIII, and FF V XIII along with a slew of other titles will be out!

It's a great time to be a PS3 gamer come this fall.

Just you wait!! :P

So, now the customer is the idiot, and they want to trick people into buying the uber expensive blue ray player PS3, that playes some games too, instead of 360 console with a vast game slection for half price and incredible bundles

I guess if a store supports PS3 more, there will be a problem with MS or whatever

Will be really funny to see emploees hiding 360's behind desks, and talking poeple in PS3 consoles :)

I am sure they will be a distraction, BUT why not get 360 with the REAL games ?

As for the port? I got my fingers crossed for ya...but I don't think it's gonna be as good. However, it prolly wont bother you either seeing as how you think its mediocre so to each their own I guess. :P

[QUOTE="NextGenNow"]This fall I'm predicting a blow out on PS3's. With one unit to purchase everyone and their brother is gonna be scrambling to get one with all the new games out...that and with haze looking better than Halo 3 with that new video I'd say it's gonna be worth paying Gamestop employees to reserve em! :PNextGenNow

Haze is Multiplatform

But we as gamers both know waiting sucks....and the Xbox is getting a port at that..and we all know how ports have been working out...whoever's console the game is built to optimize gets the good version...I blame different architectures...but I would put money on 360 gettin the gimpd one 1 and a half down the road.

But people aren't going to get a PS3 to play Haze over Halo 3 when they can get Haze on the 360.  It doesn't matter if it's a port or not; the game is still there.

With a $600.00+ price tag that will never happen. Come on you really think people are so desperate that they will drop $600 for a game  with no following? It's not a sequelso it has no fan base.

If i had to choose between ALL those games you mensiond and Mass Effect, or Fable 2 or Lost Odyssey or Bioshock, i would DEFIANTLY go for one of those games, than ALL those PS3 ones

I am sure they will be a distraction, BUT why not get 360 with the REAL games ?

You know whats funny? I get all the games you just mentioned :P cuz they are all coming to PC..so Imma eventually get em anyways..even Halo 3! Where as PS3 games can only be had...guess where I'm going with this....just guess...lol

You're forgetting how long you'll probably have to wait for Halo 3, and how dated it will be compared to other PC games when it actually comes out.

You wanna hear some of the stuff the people at my local game come out with about the 360.

its a marketing startegy, you know to get more promotion for its system, the problem today is that most people get the facts from there friends which is mostly biased 99.99999% of the time so by pushing a product itll inform the customer better about the advantages of having a ps3 which now system wise is many and gaming wise really low until fall when the good games start coming out.

I don't know what they say but I am sure all the employees have thei rown opinions. The fact is if this is true Sony is bribing employees to push their console over the competition and that seems illegal.

The ONE game i care about most beeing best on my 360 from PS3 is Last Remnant, which uses UE3.0, so probably will be great, or best on 360 due to more experience with UE3.0 on 360

Assasins Creed is confirmed to be about same, with a bit better textures on PS3 (we will see about that in the end), and better frame rates on 360 (meaning they can push better textures too)

Most other games are made for PC/360 first so no worries there, all best on 360 or same with PS3 at worst case scenario

This is actually common in many retail outlets.  Tire manufacturers are probably the most notable example.

The truth is, they don't even know anything about gaming in the first place.  Biased opinion or not, it's uninformed.

You could always make a gigantic leap and go to say he is inferring that there are games out on the PS3 for people to be able to play other then haze and so answering the question why people would sink 600 dollars into a PS3.

but they might know more than the average person that comes into the store. we're not average after all :)

it's like how i chuckle at GeekSquad but sadly they know more than the average person.

They tried to talk me out of my PS3 and get a Wii. I told them to lick my butt and got a PS3. But it does sound like some desperation from sony.

Because the gamestop stores aren't pushing X360's anymore?

darthogre

I have a few friends that work at some local gamestops. They are always trying to push the PS3. They jusy happen to know not trying to push anything on me. When I have to go shoping ,im on a mission to find that one thing Im looking for. Sometimes I will find a game in bargin been, but they know me well enough not to try to push high price tech items on me like a PS3 or a Helio Ocean.

Only thing I know gamestop isnt pushing is the Wii. Only reason I still want one is because everyone else wants one. Not because I like any of the games. But I have grown a protective layer to avoid stuff that I know I really dont want.
