With the March NPD results now available, the big three console makers have begun to weigh in on their respective performances. Although the PS3 sold just 130K units in the U.S. for March, SCEA noted that it's the only console to see an increase (2% month-over-month), while Wii was down 22% and Xbox 360 was down 12%.

The full statement from SCEA follows:

"According to NPD data, March 2007 showed a 24% increase in retail dollars generated year-over-year for the PlayStation brand in North America with total sales of $447 million, due in part to the addition of the PS3 platform as well as the strong launch performance of God of War II for PS2 at retail. While PS3 saw a month-over-month increase of 2% with sales of 129,638 units, we continued to find ourselves supply constrained in March due primarily to the shift in manufacturing focus to the PS3 PAL version to support the launch of the system in Europe. PSP also witnessed gains in March, up 2% over February with sales of 179,796 units. The price of the PSP Core system was dropped from $199 to $169 in early April, which has received very positive retailer and consumer response. PS2 continued to be a strong performer in March, with unit sales of 279,866. On the software front, we were pleased to see sales increases from February for both the PSP and PS2. PS2 software showed a 29% increase with the launch of God of War II and PSP software demonstrated a 13% jump."

It *may* have some truth to it. In Feb. there were PS3s spilling out onto sales floors everywhere. Didn't see so many in March.

Yes, they weren't spilling onto sales floors in March. They were still sitting there from the month before.

I'm just saying, instead of the usual 10-12 units at every local Wal-Mart in my area, it was more like 3-4.

PS2 continued to be a strong performer in March, with unit sales of 279,866. On the software front, we were pleased to see sales increases from February for both the PSP and PS2. PS2 software showed a 29% increase with the launch of God of War II and PSP software demonstrated a 13% jump."

MasterChumly

No crying required. Because unlike fanboys, the executives and members of the board are not dedicating their time seperating the total performance of divisions within their company. When you look at the TOTAL picture. Sony appears to be doing alright considering it moved almost 300K Playstation 2s and software sales have increased on those platforms.

If you add up all hardware, ALL of it. Not just the 'next-gen', it still looks like Sony has quite a bit of marketshare.

Please, you're completely taking that statement out of context. It was about 'lower wages' in the United States when compared to the rest of Europe.

There are plenty PS3s in stores here. Funny how Sony always has an excuse, was it constrained in all other months after the PS3 release too? because the PS3 has yet to outsell the 360 ever since it was released in NA.

Sure, I can't disagree there. During the Holiday season, it could be a problem. But during the typical slow season of the year, and right after the release of a major Playstation 2 game. No need to start sweating yet.

Sony saying the PS3 is supply constrained is a load of crap.  Plain and simple.  I've NEVER seen PS3s out of stock at ANY store since launch.  There are plenty.  Sony just doesn't want to admit that people arn't going to pay $600 for a video game system.

The good thing about the PS2 selling great is though...

PS2 sales = Money for Sony

Money for Sony = PS3 price drop sooner. :D (Hopefully for anyone that wants one :P)

As long as gamers are buying ps2's to fill up thier next gen void then sony has nothing to worry about -they still making profit and thats what matter.

It's the usual 'Our last-gen systems are dead' so we'll try out best to separate SCEs TOTAL performance and focus on one single portion of their business.

While I understand your point, the performance of the PS3 is far more important than that of the PS2 at the moment. Sony's gaming division needs to ride the PS3 for at least another 4 to 5 years, and it's at a critical time in it's lifecycle where it needs to get a solid userbase so third parties will continue to take it seriously. It's already lost quite a bit of good will in the development community, it needs to regain that by showing that it will have the customer base ready for the third party products to be successful.

That would be a welcome change. But you know, the De Beers company isn't out there saying "Hey, guess what, we've got vaults full of diamonds that we're not releasing to the market to keep the prices sky high" Or Microsoft actually admitting that they stole ideas from Xerox. Or Ford announcing that "We laid off workers because we're not selling cars", instead of "Gas prices are skyhigh and the economy is to blame!"

All companies spin news and data, sometimes they fail badly. People in the corporate world make lots of money just to do that. Sony is a 'different' case though I suppose, because fanboys say so.

In terms of sales? Motorstorm certainly did not flop, tho when it comes to the top 20 games in the sales charts PS3 could have definitely done better with 3rd party. I was very surprised by the Oblivion sales...........

[QUOTE="thirstychainsaw"]Sony really likes to feed us B.S.latinrage69

it's what they're best. they failed at everything else.

Yeah, you're right. Columbia and Sony Pictures is currently at the bottom right now. Box office totals for their films are really, really bad. I bet Smokin' Aces beat out Ghost Rider in the cinemas. And yeah, the Bravia XBR is widely known as the worst HDTV on the market.

Just plain failures.
