With the March NPD results now available, the big three console makers have begun to weigh in on their respective performances. Although the PS3 sold just 130K units in the U.S. for March, SCEA noted that it's the only console to see an increase (2% month-over-month), while Wii was down 22% and Xbox 360 was down 12%.
The full statement from SCEA follows:
"According to NPD data, March 2007 showed a 24% increase in retail dollars generated year-over-year for the PlayStation brand in North America with total sales of $447 million, due in part to the addition of the PS3 platform as well as the strong launch performance of God of War II for PS2 at retail. While PS3 saw a month-over-month increase of 2% with sales of 129,638 units, we continued to find ourselves supply constrained in March due primarily to the shift in manufacturing focus to the PS3 PAL version to support the launch of the system in Europe. PSP also witnessed gains in March, up 2% over February with sales of 179,796 units. The price of the PSP Core system was dropped from $199 to $169 in early April, which has received very positive retailer and consumer response. PS2 continued to be a strong performer in March, with unit sales of 279,866. On the software front, we were pleased to see sales increases from February for both the PSP and PS2. PS2 software showed a 29% increase with the launch of God of War II and PSP software demonstrated a 13% jump."

Laugh ALL you want. But remember PAL regions saw 1 Million PS3s in March.  1 Million!!!!!!!!!!
Thats definetly sounds like a shift in priority
To bad they only sold 800k
It *may* have some truth to it. In Feb. there were PS3s spilling out onto sales floors everywhere. Didn't see so many in March.TekkenMaster606
There were no shortages of PS3 in the USA in March. NONE!! You could find them in every store just about. Sony is just trying to do positive PR spin as usual. Sales are poor for the PS3, so they focus on the PS2 which is outselling both of their brand new systems.

No crying required. Because unlike fanboys, the executives and members of the board are not dedicating their time seperating the total performance on divisions within their company. When you look at the TOTAL picture. Sony appears to be doing alright considering it moved almost 300K Playstation 2s and software sales have increased on those platforms. Â

If you add up all hardware, ALL of it. Not just the 'next-gen', it still looks like Sony has quite a bit of marketshare.Â
You keep forgetting that the PS2 and it's software are all dirt cheap now. Almost all of the old PS2 games can be purchased for $20 or less. So even though Sony is selling a lot of PS2 and software, their profits aren't surpassing their losses from the PS3. The only thing really keeping them afloat is the sales of the HDTV's.
[QUOTE="audioaxes"]
lol supply shortage excuse? nice try but return home nobody is buying sonyÂ

Â
did you notice the 360 went under 200k this month? yea your probably missed that.Â
The Wii dropped in sales too. That always happens around this time of the year. May & June will probably see even lower numbers. This is nothing new.

It was less then that. Sony Exec said they think they sold about 800,000. It was probably more like 650k-700k. Still not bad for a 3-4week period, but sales have steadily tumbled since the launch in Europe.

No Wii is actually really supply constrained, they're sold out everywhereÂ
They should've said something to this effect yesterday or the day before. If ps3 fans are so confident this is true then answer me this...
"why did sony so quickly respond to the NPD numbers?"

They MUST have known this was coming.Â
I don't understand why Nintendo is so popular now, Wii sucks arse, it's new FPS gameplay promise has failed miserabley and so do the graphics. It's only selling because it's cheap and is a cheap excuse of a next gen console. Everybody has just jumped on the nintendo boat and they are lying to themselves thinking they are doing a good thing.
I mean look at the games for crying out loud they sux, the only good thing sheep will be playing a mario rehashes

There's at least 2 Mario games a year and people still go crazy for them even after 10 years, it's just the nestolgia that makes people actually rate those games high. People need to wake up, a PS2 is a better buy than a Wii if you can't afford a PS3 or 360.

Yeah but theres a difference, you actually can't find a wii over 90% of the time, its a damn hard console to get your hands on. It took 4weeks to get mine and plus nintendo don't comment on sales figures every month.Â

twist it anyway u want but fact is sooner or later sales of the ps2 will drop what will be the excuse then when ps3 is still failing to impressÂ
[QUOTE="Dreams-Visions"]Cry Sony. Cry.
Excuses are worthless. Motorstorm flopped as well. shame.

Meh, for flop, 200,000 in half a month with under 3 million ps3s to play it is pretty good...
Yeah, Motorstorm did quite well. I wasn't so sure how that would play out.Â

You're pretty much right, however, this is a shortsighted view. The PS2 will sooner or later lose it's dominance. Without a stable base on the PS3 by then (if the PS3 doesn't pick up and remains in third place) all the normal cash inflow of the CG division of Sony will be severely damaged. Not to mention, the PS3 is making as big (and at some points bigger) dent on Sony's finances than what the PS2 is raising them.
Is this all cause for concern? Nah, not really. Sony's not in danger or anything. Are they still with first dibs on the gravy train? Nope, no longer.
So yeah, Sony, right now, is not bad at all. But it doesn't seem to be building a very stable future like the PS2 was doing last gen in similar circumstances. SCEI's bet is on most PS2ers jumping to the PS3, and while this is very probable (and we will see a surge in PS3 sales when support for the PS2 starts to dry), it is a big bet.
Â
And in any case, it's impossible to ignore the painfully obvious BS we're being subjected to. Supply constraints? Couldn't they have come with something more plausible, like a chocobo uprising? Not to mention, didn't the PS3 sell even worse last month, when it was not "supply constrained"?Â
Nah, I'd say it's just more to do with the price. I really am surprised with 130K though. I'm hoping this is a clear signal to them that the PS3 is just too expensive (hint: drop the price in Australia first!).the-very-best
Didn't you say this time they would outsell the 360 ? Â

This is what I call picking and choosing words, which is infamous of system wars. They didn't make the huge excuse, they just stated that some of their supplies went to pal regions, but the most notable thing they stated and should be pronounced pathetic is the fact that they stated the software, and hardware jumped.

lol, yes.
I also thought PSP and Wii would sell a lot better than they did. Not a good month for my predictions.
It's gonna be like that pretty much every month this year.
1) Wii
2) 360 (Maybe first for a month or two with GTA/Halo 3)
3) PS3
Felous1
Nah, I think Wii will stay on top for the whole year, even in Christmas. Non gamers + Wiisports is gonna be huge in Christmas again.Â
I think PS3 might outsell 360 in September though if Lair/HS/KZ/R&C are released as planned since 360 has nothing major in that month (I think it's safe to say that).
Sony really needs to drop the price of the PS3 though.

There is no word picking going on here.
1) The sony monkey said they were supply constrained in march.
2) (1) Is a blatant, boldfaced lie. Like, "Mexico is to the north of Canada".
Â
I think that's the core issue here. The ease with which BS is thrown around... and believed by some. Â
Really? That's news to me :o. I thought I could go to EBgames and get a PS3 whenever I wanted. :shock:Jandurin
did you ask them if they have ps3s? display boxes mean nothing or I must have been able to get a ps3 here in nz a month before launch

Â
Halo 3 is supposedly coming out in september.
Well the drop in hardware sales for Wii is due to the fact they are just not making enough. I have yet to see one in my local Wal-Mark, Target, Best Buy, ect... No one has it here in Austin, TX. PS3, they had plenty. I"ve not walked into a store that never had a PS3.
Still though, I find it odd that X360 dropped so much. Maybe PS3 is not as bad off as I thought. Still say they need a price drop of $200 dollars, specially with no $500 pricepoint available anymore.

Halo 3 atm has a release date in September lol. That's not to say it will for sure release during that time but it's just another reason why it's NOT safe to say that.
