It's worth the extra investment though, says Steinberg. "The price of the PS3 is high but you're paying for potential," he said, touting Sony's ten-year lifecycle plan for the shiny box.

I don't want potential, I want games!!!! Does anyone REALLY want to be playing games on that outdated piece of machinery in 2012? 360 FTW.

how many times do I have to run this through your brains the PS3 will be a 10 year console. 150 million sold. With blu-ray, the Cell, bluetooth, rumble, EDGE development tools, free online, PSN, and Firmware update 3.41, the PS3 will be a viable console well past 2016. Especially when the Cell is unlocked more with the EDGE development tools. If that is not potential I don't know what is.

Sure I guess so. It's kind of like me pulling out my Sega Genesis & playing NHL 94. I guess it's still considered viable too

No, it wont be the same at all. When the power of the Cell is further revealed (with tools like EDGE, firmware update, etc), look at PS3 graphics being only slightly downgraded from XBOX 720 graphics in 2016. Around the difference between the PS2 and XBOX 1 difference.

Right..... answer this truthfully - would you play games now on a PC you built in the year 1998? How about one from 2000?

Didn't think so.

Yes. I actually played Zelda OOT a couple months ago. Every once in a while I pull out the old Rainbow Six games. I even play Tenchu Stealth Assasins sometimes. They are still fun. In 2016, there won't be nearly a big a difference graphically with now as there is between now and 1998. Crysis graphics are great, but are they really that much better than motorstorm or uncharted? The difference is not THAT great. And look for Crysis (or at least Crysis graphics) coming out on PS3 in a couple year when the Cell is further unlocked.

I won't disagree with you on one aspect. I do want games to, however while the 360 is currently winning now it's also heading into its 4th year without a very large library games. With the average life span of a system being 5 years the 360 is starting to show its age in both hardware design and Interface. Which is why they are attempting to update the system now. MS knows that any attempt to introduce a new system within the next 2 years wouldn't be a really good a idea mainly due to the lack of games plaguing the current generation and the cost to make a new platform would probably place it well of above the current price of the ps3. So MS is in a bit of a pickle ya see. while the ps3 on the other if Sony operates in 2009 correctly still has a good 4 yrs to offer the Gaming community, Before we are introduced to the new generation of consoles.

Remember the Consoles do not decide when the next generation of gaming takes place. The gamers do when we decide if the new consoles are WORTH getting.

Fartstorm is a fakeboy troll. Basically he created this account a few weeks ago for the "fun" of pretending to be a rediculus fanboy to discredit SONY. He actually likes Nintendo not Sony.

What are you talking about? Seriously, get over it. This is insulting, and I am considering reporting this. And yes, I DO own a PS3, and I have a Wii so yes I like Nintendo too. Notice my icon? I only buy Japanese consoles. The 360 is getting too much love on SW right now, so someone has to defend Sony. I think that Sony is doing the best job out of all the consoles.

Cell isn't the only thing important in a console. The amount of ram and the GPU will still be holding back the Cell, and I mean they will hold it back a lot.

While its nice in principal,

It means nothing to me as a gamer, while I respect Sony for its support of the PSone and PS2 I think back and ask myself how many PSone games did I buy after I got a PS2? How many PS2 games did I buy after I bought the PS3?

When Microsoft or Nintendo or whomever releases the next generation of consoles while it may be interesting to the masses that PS3 games are still coming out, the reality is how many of us on System Wars will care? When was the last time we praised a PS2 game? or even discussed it in a context that doesn't involve "The Wii version looks worse then the PS2 version"

Ten year support is nice, but what is considered support? PSone support pretty well meant a new Madden every year till 2005, Since I am not a Madden fan I couldn't have cared less. Next to no new IP's for the console simply playing to those "Madden Masses" and this is what support is?

PS2 is still being "supported" while GOW II was a nice tastey treat more then a year ago, whats next? I see that Madden 2008 is on PS2 and on Xbox, but in terms of something exclusive to the console they seem to simply be piggybacking off the same shovelware that PSfolk knock the Wii for.

While I have no doubt there are some gamers who don't have any next gen consoles right now, I greatly doubt they are the majority on System Wars.

I am firmly of the belief that the first four to five years of a consoles life are the years that matters,

How much did you care about your PSone in 2004? Still your primary console as the Halo 2's, Metroid Prime 2's, GTA:SA's and Half Life 2's were hitting the marketplace? Because techincally Sony was still supporting the console.

And because the console got potential , do i have to give 450euros ( 700$??) for a 40GB/controller ? Potential for me is exclusives and gaming in general. Not hardware. If i want hardware with "potential" ill buy a power PC. Or you think ill playing with PS3 into 2016...?? I mean , wholl do that? Till then , a 20$ GPU from Nvidia and a 20$ CPU from INtel will have way more potential that whole PS3... Not to mention , BR to PCs would be like nowdays DvDs...

There is NO WAY to pay 450euros ( 700$?) for a 40BG/controller SINCE they are so arrogant that they losing MAJOR exclusives one after another... FF13.. Whats next ? Tekken6? GT5? Really what? If Ps3 was just a "little" of what PS2/PS1 were , maybe i would have one already. . And it seems will never be. Not only major ( By Sony hype) games flopping. ( Lair-Heavenly sword supposed to be AAA exclusive material , same for motorstorm ) but upon that they losing MAJOR exclusives because of the bad sales of the console... Cell is "locked" so doesnt prove its worth yet ( that suppose to be super good by Sony Hype) and PS3 fails to make the "big" difference (that SOny hyped once again )in games Vs x360...

Those are my thoughts , and if Sony doesnt change plans , and keeps saying the same things over and over again " 10 years life cycle" and all , keep PS3 on this high price , losing exclusives , 1st-2nd party games keep flopping .... QQ...

no we are paying extra for blue-ray player built in into our ps3 which is a much better deal say if your buying a 20 gig 360 for 299 or if u want a no hd 360 for 199.

my choices when i bought my next gen system was 20 gig 360 for 399 or a 60 gig ps3 for 499. so it wasnt to hard to pick a ps3. even now ps3 is the better deal for people ready to take their first steps into next gen.

Those tools are not for gaming in mind ...

They MAY help, but i doubt it.

And if we're paying for potential on a console that will last to 2016 ... why get one now at it's current price when i can get one in 2016 for $150? when it has games that are worth it?

Sadly ... i already got one.

The problem with "paying for potential" is there is no guarantee that the potential will be fulfilled.

I say buy something when it is valuable enough so that you think it is worth the price for YOU.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a system the day it came out when the games I want for it are more than a year away... especially when there is the chance that by the time you would really desire the system, the thing will probably be cheaper anyway.

Graphics are plateauing. You can't get a lot better than the Cell graphics, although it can be surpassed. Even more powerful consoles in the future will be less of a jump than say, perhaps, N64 and Gamecube. That is why with the latest development tools, blu ray, firmware updates, and the Cell, PS3 graphics will still be good in 2016.

I love these threads. Does anyone know how a Computer works in the general sense? You have 3 main components the CPU, GPU and RAM (this is a over simplification). How does data get moved around in the system to the GPU/CPU through RAM. So what would be the most limiting aspect of a system? I would go with RAM. Keep in mind you can only use what bandwidth is available to use. For example, you have a tennis ball and a garden hose attempting to move that tennis ball through the garden hose is going to be a difficult task.

BUT the CELL..... is a processor nothing else it crunches data.

This i highly doubt. I'm sorry but computers today for double the price of a PS3 can produce WAY better and more capable graphics over PS3 already. How can you even think that xbox 720 will be equivelent to fully potentialed out ps3? That's called a lie, given to you fresh from the oven by Sony themselves.

Speaking as if I don't already own a PS3:

Fine, Sony, for the PS3, I'd be paying for potential. For now, you have the potential to get my money.

BUT the CELL..... is a processor nothing else it crunches data.

how many times do I have to run this through your brains the PS3 will be a 10 year console. 150 million sold. With blu-ray, the Cell, bluetooth, rumble, EDGE development tools, free online, PSN, and Firmware update 3.41, the PS3 will be a viable console well past 2016. Especially when the Cell is unlocked more with the EDGE development tools. If that is not potential I don't know what is.Fart_Storm
No console lasts 10 years. Not even the ps2 will last 10 years.

And the wy the PS3 is going, it'll be luck to match PS2 sales, let alone surpass them

It seems that the only one I haven't seen opening their mouths lately to speak crap has been Microsoft... I wonder what's going on over there... hmm... or perhaps I'm living under a rock.

A lot of people forget that Sony and Microsoft pretty much deprived their consoles with a limited amount of RAM which has always been done in the past. It's something I'll never understand when it comes to making a console. It would have been nice to see Sony uses more memory as oppose to the installation of the Blue-ray. But I don't make the decisions...

I mean I love my PS3... but the highlighted section is the most out of this world quote since Ken Kutaragi talked about jacking into the matrix with the PS2.

Sure I guess so. It's kind of like me pulling out my Sega Genesis & playing NHL 94. I guess it's still considered viable too

really fartstorm, does the firmware update give the PS3 about a 1.5 gig of ram in addition to the ram it has now? Thanks

No but future firmware updates will allow the further optimization of the Cell, which will make it easier to get more juice out of the Cell (such as using more SPEs, etc). Imagine what the firmware updates will be like in 2016? Thus, the updates will allow workarounds from the RAM issue.
